      Add in some multiplayer to take on dungeons and maybe raids and you'd have an AMAZING game! (it'd be even cooler if you could import your characters from the MMO and completing it gave you something cool back in the MMO. like a lesser version of the orignal Legacy character tatoo or something.

    Looking back, the color palette used in 1.X does seem a bit drab to me. That said, the animations used in cutscenes were SO good. I understand that we're using canned animations nowadays to save costs, but man, it's hard not to miss the fluidity of those original animations.

      This was the first thing I noticed as well. Cutscene animations are fluid and much more animated in 1.0. I personally think this is one of the areas they need to step up their game for the next expansion. My character seems to use the same 3 emotes and it is getting drab.

    Game with 1.0 cutscenes and ARR gameplay would be perfect
    the people romanticizing 1.0 need to realize there's a reason it was down to 1000 players. the main story was great, and it had some really promising world flavor, but the gameplay itself was horrible. quests were just random pain in the ass fetch quests, and most often the best way to level was grinding. and even that was tough because monster levels were haphazardly paced. combat felt slow and clunky, and there was almost no endgame content. ARR brought much needed improvements across the board, and considering how little time they had to redo everything they did amazingly well. One has to assume that they rushed the 2.0 main story and cutscenes, investing most of their development time on mechanics and npcs.

    • @annebright3852
      @annebright3852 9 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      +skykid The two things I really liked about 1.0 was the cut scenes were a lot more interesting and you really got an awesome sense of atmosphere. Seriously, I would take little "vacations" with my fairly low level character and just explore and see what new things and beautiful sights I could find. I kind of miss that honestly. The world felt more alive to me in 1.0.

    These are really amazing and I'm so glad they exist in an accessible form now that FFXIV is as successful as it is for archival purposes
    However a lot of these comments are really missing that the quality of the cutscenes (iirc they used the engine from 13, a single player, _extremely_ linear title) for 1.0 was a huge factor in how unstable and genuinely unplayable the game was. Limsa's opening scene is notorious for being basically a slide-show.
    Even if the gameplay & overall design had been remotely passable that wouldn't have saved it if people's pcs melted halfway through the first cutscenes.
    It was also likely why they staggered msq level requirements as much as they did, because they simply couldn't afford to have their super expensive, super nice cutscenes as often as it would call for if you could get through the story like we can in 2.x+ with very minimal grind, which domino-ed into the terrible gameplay design choices that made up the rest of the 1.0 dumpster fire.
    Yes getting a cutscene or two like this would be _fucking fantastic_ (s/o to Bahamut's Coils) but they can just as easily save that for trailer work & spend the resources on the writing and gameplay features instead, which is what's kept the player base around more than just pretty cutscenes.

    • @nerdychocobo
      @nerdychocobo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      yep,, doing lipsync for every language and unique animations (which in 1.0 often used mocap) is very expensive and,, more importantly for ARR,, very time-consuming -- ARR was made in an incredibly short amount of time so they just did not have the time for all this intricate stuff. sure it's pretty but I would gladly take the substance and the volume of ARR and beyond.
      also 1.0 was indeed made in 13's engine, crystal tools. not only was it very much not made for the demands of an mmo but also a lot of key programmers on 14 were removed from the project just to work on crystal tools,, which is definitely part of the reason that 14 had such an overemphasis on pretty graphics and show-offy cutscenes and a barely functioning foundation.
      sorry for the ramble I just think all this stuff is neat!

    • @MugiwarasNakama
      @MugiwarasNakama ปีที่แล้ว

      The biggest issue with Crystal Tools was that it was developed for games like Final Fantasy X. The devs assumed the engine would be used for a turned based world tour style narrative rpg game. But the series quickly started evolving away from that. With FFXIII one of their main goals was to have the gameplay feel like Advent Children. In the end this is what killed Crystal tools. They desinged the perfect game engine for the type of games square was known for when the engine began production but then the scope of the franchise changed leaving the engone dead in the water.

    Having just finished 5.3 and loving Shadowbringers, I'm genuinely shocked at how much motion capture seems to be in these 1.0 cutscenes. While I think ARR was necessary due to the weirdness of 1.0, it is fascinating to see how certain areas of 1.0 clearly had more time/money put into them than other areas.
    That being said XIV seems to be now slowly returning to more involved cutscenes like this with characters doing motion capture movement.

      They were prerendered using Crytal Tools. Alot of mocap and asset work needed to be done for them. Sadly this takes so much work and time not to mention eat away so much of the budget of the game to do every cutscene like this. They still do some more involved cs like these in the modern game but they are fewer and more sparse. One that comes to mind is thancred and yugiri invading the sahagin camp in arr and shinryu vs omega at the end of hw.

      @@Zayindjejfj which is why I really, REALLY want 1.0 redone as a single player RPG with multiplayer elements like co-op duengon crawling and raiding. They could even bring back the open world map and go for a BOTW level of integration to the areas. The map size should be somewhere between 1.0 and 2.0+'s size since 1.0's areas were far too big, though maybe in a single player rpg they could fill in the landscape more with npcs, random cabins, etc. It all went to hell in a handbasket with the Calamity anyway so any lore/narrative inconsistencies are rectified by remembering that it probably got blown tf away like everything else did. They could even expand on areas they ditched from 1.x that they never returned to in ARR. Like the weird circular shrine area in the Black Shroud that was caught in a landslide in 2.0 that they barely did anything with afterward (it was supposedly the entrance to the ruins of one of the old civilizations, the underground elf one). That and an area in Mor Dhona was originally the tomb of a long dead emperor/king that was speculated to be the entrance to a raid they never added (I suspect it was going to be the original version of the crystal tower raid or something at least similar) and the area in some expansion of 1.x, like around 1.2x it was turned into a shrine for one of the Twelve that Luisoix needed the now-scions to pray at to rouse the gods for his sealing spell to try and stop the calamity.

      v1.0 seemed to focus more on the graphics and presentation then actually fleshing out the world. The game had so much potential but was ruined because it got rushed out to try to beat those warcraft sales.
      We all told the devs the game isnt ready, there are too many "blank" spots where nothing happens for a long time. The world.. well they had the right idea of seamless loading it made it seem more "real" but at what costs? Copy and paste areas. No real landmarks to help you navigate you literally walked around using the mini-map. a glorified pac-man.
      Dont get me started on a MMO that had crafting as a major feature from the get go and relying on going to an external website to find out how to craft things.
      We all hoped it was just teething problems but we all knew it wasnt going to last.
      I tried to love v1.0, I played it a lot despite its flaws. But it was a broken mess.

    I'm gonna say this right now, (keep in mind I'm 8 minutes in, I'll reply afterwards if I'm wrong) these cinematics seem just, so much more detailed than ARR. They're smoother, less choppy, and they feel like they have more depth. And so far the protagonist in this has made more noise than yours in like, the entire game (ARR). And while sure the silent protagonist is nice, I'd like some kind of vocal reaction other than stoic nods and voiceless looks of surprise.

  • @seizui

    I won't lie, I am actually fond of the cutscenes in 1.x more than 2.x. While overall, 2.X graphics and UI have improved in the cutscenes, there are a lot of things from the 1.X that has a charm to it.
    1) The NPC around you are more involved besides sitting around. Just the beginning of the video showed me a couple of things that I wish were kept; a) The humorous interaction between Yda and Papalymo which added a bit to them, b) the entire scene of the tree monster eating the wolves and the chase scene, c) the residents of Gridania jumped in to save you. While the player is important, the NPCs jumping in added quite a bit to the atmosphere. They definitely feel more involved in 1.X than they did in 2.X.
    2) The zoning out had a nice echoy song to it. You didn't really get that with 2.0, sadly.

      I think people are just amazed by the cutscenes bc its nothing like we have now, but the overall ENTERITY of the game as of SHB has improved so vastly in comparison to 1.0 where the best thing to write home about was these animations and physics, AKA the only thing being shown in the video.
      So while it does feel like we did lose a bit in terms of "fluid animations" even now in 5.0, no one can say 1.0 beats what we gained in better story, quest structure, clothing, classes + options, and overall QoL.

      @@wolfhackzx I'm up to date on shb and still prefer my old 1,0 story. I feel like one of the only people who genuinely enjoyed 1,0 for what it was and think the story was way better expressed back then. Sure they've improved the game a lot, but they also stripped a lot from the game that was good. Almost everything relating to 1,0 was stripped barren so when you play 2,0 and see things like titan just wanting to kill you because.... no reason is ever given. In 1,0 he wants you dead because you kill his children and he sobs morning them. In 2,0 and even now you might as well be a stick standing there doing jack shit 99% of the time in a cutscene while everyone else is also a stick minus the person(s) who are the current focus who might get some unique animations occasionally. In 1,0 that was never the case be in MSQ or in side cutscenes. The story in 1,0 was by far the biggest focus and as such it excelled far better than anything up till shb has done since. Only now with shb I feel us legacy players are starting to get that 1,0 story telling feel again. Though I'd still play a legacy serveur if ever was made. Miss those times back then where it felt like the world was alive and dynamic around you. Now its just kinda stiff and made to look pretty with no real substance until shb.

    I somehow get the feeling that this game was originally intended to be a single player entry in the series. But when the management at Square realized that XI was their most profitable Final Fantasy, they ordered Tanaka and his team to make an MMO out of what they had already done, and didn't give him the proper time necessary to do it right. I could be completely wrong, of course, but it's just so hard to believe that one of Square's best producers would make such a bad game.

      Square Enix has only ever made a handful of movies. There'd be more except one of those movies bombed so hard at the box office it's considered the reason they closed the movie development studio they'd just created for the purpose of making Final Fantasy movies, and apparently might have actually put the merger between Square Soft and Enix at risk. Apart from KingsGlaive the last one, I think, would either be Advent Children or Spirits Within(the movie that bombed).

    However, I literally had to pause the video every single time the text changed because you clicked way too quickly. I am not a slow reader, but there is no way I can keep up with your 1-2 seconds per paragraph click rate. This made viewing it a bit of a chore instead being a fully enjoyable experience.
    If you decide to do something like this again, please, please, please ease up on the clicking. Give people a chance to read the text comfortably without having to manually pause the video constantly.

    the animations were nice to look at and the models were top notch... but the backgrounds and zones were bland and lifeless, which is why people like to pretend it was 'seamless' in their transitions. of course they were, there was barely anything there to transition. the models and animation, they get a 10, but the backgrounds get a 1. Now both are about a 5 and more people can play without having to buy some high powered rig.

      It seems like every one says this, but have any of you actually watched and read the cut scenes in ARR? A kid lightning a tree on fire is what you use your power of the echo for, seriously!? At least in ARR they make you feel somewhat important to the story, in 1.0 cut scenes it's mostly the your toon standing to the side, watching everything happen.

    • @sean-paulrankin5260
      @sean-paulrankin5260 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I feel like saying cut scenes are better in version 1 just comes from some sort of it doesn't exist any more so it has to be better mentality. I mean, in ARR the camera actually moves around and we see way more character expression and most importantly your character actually matters. You are the 1 warrior of light. In the Version 1 cut scenes they completely negate you out by giving you a partner that has the exact same powers but is actually able to talk like a real person. And the End boss battle cut scene is worse than a sick joke. I see every one saying these cut scenes are better than ARR but I don't see a single reason.
