Having just started playing the game, going through ARR had me asking alot of questions "Whose this character?" "Whats this event they talk about?" and so on, this was genuinely a big help in answering pretty much all off them! So fantastic job
That makes me so glad to hear! I really enjoyed 1.0, even with its flaws. This brings me back to the heart of it before ARR, so thank you for that. Seeing the Inn Cutscene too still shakes me and gets me misty eyed lol.
I didn't play back in 1.0 so I hope I did it justice to someone like you who were there and that I managed to catch the feeling of the calamity properly!
Love your detail on this trailer. Some context for the main character, Warrior of Light. Because Final Fantasy XIV is an online MMORPG, you're able to change classes/jobs. When he flashes blue and his armor changes, that's him changing class. Specifically previous classes highlighted from earlier content chapters (as shown by the flashback). This is a very important element to the game's structure. I highly suggest starting with A Realm Reborn - A New Beginning. That trailer was created as an homage to the first version of XIV (1.0) incorporating the last cinematic of the game before it was shutdown. The first version of the game had failed to live up to expectations and SquareEnix took a chance to redo the game's story, structure, dynamics, etc. When it was announced that the game was being redone, the servers introduced a harbinger (Dalamud Moon) that would grow in the sky as the end of the game counted down. At 00:00 of the original game they played the trailer End of an Era to say thank you to the fans who stuck around, destroying Eorzea, and making a promise to a better story soon. A New Beginning welcomes old fans and new fans to what is now FF XIV A Realm Reborn (2.0+).
Thank you for the video!! Honestly at the beginning I thought it was going to be boring and with just you talking and showing pictures. You made it fun and easy to understand and added in some great cutscenes I've never seen before bc I came in on ARR. I never knew why Thancred was so anal about Minfillia. I thought he was in love with her or something now knowing he was like a daughter to him it makes more sense of why her death meant so much and how much it hurt to see a young Minfillia in Endwaker. Ohh also he song playing to the choses who could hear the echo. It made sense that now Hydalyn has now chosen her chapions by song. So it actually Hydalyn sining the not to her champions. I though it was jusy the theme song to ARR.
This is an amazing video essay, and especially an amazing summary of ffxiv 1.0!! Would love to see more amazing video essays or lore videos from you in the future!! Thank you for making this video!!
Thank you so much! I am making more, currently working on the ARR video, it's just *a lot* of work haha. I hope I'll be more efficient with the videos for the expansions, though! I'm also interested in maybe doing similar videos for other series I enjoy. I'm open to any suggestions as well though! :D
Great job! I only recently started playing and just finished the initial story of a realm reborn and this was absolutely mind boggling to know. I think you did a great job telling the story that I did not know but wanted to know. Absolutely blown away by this. I have much greater appreciation for the Realm Reborn now. Thank you.
>mentions Female Hrothgar's will be added in the game two years ago Now that we're getting them in Dawntrail I never realized that this was something planned so far in advance. lol
I don't know why you have so few subs, but this is amazing! I've watched the Speakers Network stuff like Fall and Rise and Remnants of a Realm, but this is such a good recap of the overall story. Thank you for sharing this. (2.3 to present player here)
1.0 was very bad - Obviously - but God, that buildup to Bahamut was *golden.* It's the kind of event only a dying game could have possibly pulled off, And I can only imagine how it must have felt to experience it live.
I really hope I managed to capture that feeling of 1.0’s final days in my video, as I also find the build up fascinating and so well pulled off. I wasn’t there myself but it would’ve been interesting to experience!
Honestly... How about an area that's like a Eureka or Bozja where you can experience all the story events of 1.0 I think that would be awesome! Mini retro expansion in an expansion.
*ENDWALKER SPOILERS* The Traveler's Wards (which Hydaelyn/Venat has) that grant the Echo don't lean your aether and cause devotion towards light, actually, otherwise, Alisaie's Porxies could get rid of the Echo. You're led to believe it *is* tempering because of Emet's biased view, but you soon learn that isn't the case when you hit Elpis in Endwalker. You'd also have way more trouble taking in the Lightwardens' light if the Echo worked that way. It's safe to say Ifrit simply assumes you're tempered by something else - but traveler's wards are basically asleep in everyone - they just need to recall the sundered memory of the Final Days to activate that power. Ifrit likely just wasn't aware of the whole thing given his whole thing is trying to win converts by barfing flame on people and aspecting their aether towards fire.
I started playing FF14 in 2013 which was my 1st & still the only MMO game I've ever played. I regret not watching this amazing video before playing Endwalker. Still I enjoyed it & I'm glad to have many questions answered. Specially the one regarding whether the current adventurer is the same as the 1.0 one or not. Thank you very much for this well organized video. It made me feel like I'm being inside 1.0 & playing through the whole story. I'll be sure to show this to my friends who are planning to play FF14 soon ^_^
Hey just bumping into this. You did great. I keep searching for info on this story, especially this chapter, and I think you did excellent. Hope you are doing well, and if you feel like it upload more!
Getting ready to finally do stormblood. With the Yda reveal, and how Thancred protected Minfilia in childhood, storylines being brought up during heavensward I realized it was finally time I look at 1.0 storyline to make sense of past information.
Incredible video! Just started playing the game seriously and this was everything I needed. Are you still planning on making similar lore videos for ARR and the rest of the expansions?
Thank you! I'm glad to hear it helped you! I am in fact working on the ARR video right now. It just takes a lot more time to replay the story, capture the footage, transfer it to an USB and then move it to my computer lol (which I am doing right now) Even after I finish transferring everything it's about 23 hours of footage I have to go through. The script is done though! xD
little did i know that back on that fateful day when dalamud fell, i would be in for a big surprise. or rather a rude awakening as i wholeheartedly believed it would be just a server restart and we'd be able to move on to 2.0 right away. boy was i wrong! >.
Watching this video makes me want to voice over my own essays or recaps or whatever but i don't know how to edit video. I'd love to redub this and try to give the reading a dramatic flair, but who has the time? Thank you for making this
@@LordAri Oh. My apologies if that came off as rude. But yeah, a pantheon is a group of several gods, so the Elementals/Twelve would be considered a single pantheon, made up of 12 gods.
Friend recommended your video to me as I'm planning to start my trial version of ARR soon. A lot of this confused me as you throw *a lot* of terminology out there very quickly and it was hard to keep up. (Not your fault, it's just the amount of stuff in the game that you need to cover, I know) But this was a good start. Might need to watch it two or three more times to get it. Also Gaius made me crack up in the scene you showed where he actually speaks because dude is just fucking the Final Fantasy version of Darth Vader. 🤣
A friend recommended you my video? That makes me really happy to hear, I’m glad it was useful to you! I figured the beginning would be very heavy for completely new players, so I apologize for that! At the time of making, I made this as a recap for my couple of friends, and then it evolved into an introduction over time as I had another friend start the game while I was making this video. It is, however, terminology I think is useful to know during all of that. Some of it could have been saved for later in retrospect. I have been thinking of making an shorter, more concise summary for *completely* new players but that would have to be after I finish covering the rest of the game. A lot of behind-the-scenes lore in this comment😂 Thanks for watching!
@@LordAri Yep and the bombardment of lore isn't necessarily a failure on your part it's just you throw a lot at me and I'm going to miss some things. Like I said, repeated viewings and I'll pick up on it.
I don't regret missing out on playing this game, but I do wish there were a way to experience its story first hand. Logging in to a nightmare about oneself getting murdered is such a powerful narrative device.
Im currently starting my FFXIV journey. Im wondering how it was for players when they transitioned. Did there characters reset to level 1 ? Did they have to level through the same content again with a new main story or did ARR add completely new content ?
Man I wish the game went through some of the details you show here, I got into the game this month and was throw in the middle of the post war in ARR and couldn't quite understand a few things about the world.
Just started playing FF14 and I wanted to know the backstory more, since you can't play it anymore. This was pretty good. and answered a lot questions I had.

Thank you! And yeah, I had a bit of trouble with the audio mixing. It sounded fine on my computer, but sounded different once I uploaded it. I'll hopefully have found a way to fix it for the next video!

It motivates me to keep going and you can be sure I will continue!
I don't think you really *need* to know all this to understand ARR. Although I do think it would help to know who the characters are and what they talk about in ARR. There is the CG animation as the intro and then characters will mention "The Calamity" and you'll get some information about it. However, when I first played I did not know there was a "1.0" to FFXIV and so everything before the calamity is really hidden in the text of ARR. In my opinion, at least. I'm glad you enjoyed my video, and I hope it helped give some more info!
"NIGHTMARE!" - just to quote a certain director ;) Still... cant help but feel that someone should take this and make a passion project of it... though it would probably violate copyright and whatnot... Ah well, one can dream :) As someone who still keeps GW1 on a pedestal and thinks it superior to its successor, I think I would've liked this... clucky or not... had I know it existed in the first place, which I didnt... I didnt know that there was any MMO from FF to begin with ^^°
It’s the official 1.0 recap which was only included in the PS3 version of ARR (as far as I am aware) for some weird reason. The whole thing is on TH-cam though just look up «Waning of the Sixth Sun» and about an hour long video should show up😊
@@SprDrumio64 No. About 20 years ago (about 14-15 before the Calamity), during the Garlean conquest of Ala Mhigo, Yda escaped to Sharlayan (now Dravanian Hinterlands/Idyllshire), and she eventually became part of the Circle of Knowing/Scions. The exodus of the Eorzean Sharlayans back to Old Sharlayan happened about 15 years ago (10 before the Calamity), though you can see a few remained in Eorzea to mingle with Limsa/Ul'dah/Gridania. Yda died in a mission about 1 year before the Calamity, so it was shortly before 1.0.
Louisoix should be revered by every Eorezian for his sacrifice and triumph over Bahamut, as their existence would have ended without his intervention. Not nearly enough respect given to the man In ARR and beyond. Shame most players today will never know about that story unless they play through coils.
Yoshi P. Was really given something terrible and played an absolute blinder with the story and vision he had in mind. Not many developers would actually create a narrative to destroy the world, then break rules of most MMORPGs making hub city's dangerous and having monsters attack your ability to traverse the world. All while that eerie music is playing. The game clearly had problems and was probably bad but the experience must have been something to play through without know what was coming next
Having just started playing the game, going through ARR had me asking alot of questions "Whose this character?" "Whats this event they talk about?" and so on, this was genuinely a big help in answering pretty much all off them! So fantastic job
That makes me so glad to hear!
F*ck bro why are ya spoiling
Dude... this is an amazing work!!! Well Done! Very well put!!
Thank you.
>mentions Female Hrothgar's will be added in the game two years ago
Now that we're getting them in Dawntrail I never realized that this was something planned so far in advance. lol
Honestly this video is a big help in me deciding how my character fits into story and world of FF XIV.
I don't know why you have so few subs, but this is amazing! I've watched the Speakers Network stuff like Fall and Rise and Remnants of a Realm, but this is such a good recap of the overall story. Thank you for sharing this. (2.3 to present player here)
This video is so well put together and your naration and explanations greatlt add and compliment the content covered. Can't wait for the next one!
Thanks for the nice comment! I've been busy with stuff but I'm slowly making the next video, so thanks for your support!
Honestly... How about an area that's like a Eureka or Bozja where you can experience all the story events of 1.0
I think that would be awesome! Mini retro expansion in an expansion.
Trying to refresh my understanding of the history. Thank you for the summary.
1.0 Ifrit was so correct when assumed that echo-bearers were plainly tempered by another primal, it blows my mind
*ENDWALKER SPOILERS*
The Traveler's Wards (which Hydaelyn/Venat has) that grant the Echo don't lean your aether and cause devotion towards light, actually, otherwise, Alisaie's Porxies could get rid of the Echo.
Bro the scene where the Scions fight Gaius is the most I've ever seen them directly do anything
Certainly compared to Realm Reborn/7th Astral Age
Great video!
Thank you, I enjoyed watching your retelling :)
Thanks a lot for making this recap! I really enjoyed hearing it especially as a new player
You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed😊
Getting ready to finally do stormblood. With the Yda reveal, and how Thancred protected Minfilia in childhood, storylines being brought up during heavensward I realized it was finally time I look at 1.0 storyline to make sense of past information.
Did you ever plan on releasing those other story recaps? I liked this a lot and would love to see more
Gaius was a bad ass in 1.0. I mean he is a bad ass now too, but he was underwhelming back in 2.0.
yo I forgot about the nightmares! That was really trippy! Good stuff!
Thanks for making this. Never got to play it and didn't realize it was this crazy!
Glad to hear you enjoyed it!
Ngl, kinda want 1.0 remastered now
They should turn it into a movie 🥲
The nightmare logins must have been real unsettling for the first time
Ah 1.0 and the calamity.... This is why Answers will forever be my favorite song SE will ever push out for FFXIV.
Same, it still makes me cry. BUT... The eerie version before the fall I can't even listen to.
You'll love it even more come Endwalker.
The script is done though! xD
@@LordAri Thank you so much for the immense amount of effort that you will be putting in.
Great video, ehens the next?
little did i know that back on that fateful day when dalamud fell, i would be in for a big surprise. or rather a rude awakening as i wholeheartedly believed it would be just a server restart and we'd be able to move on to 2.0 right away. boy was i wrong! >.
Great recap. Thanks!
Watching this video makes me want to voice over my own essays or recaps or whatever but i don't know how to edit video. I'd love to redub this and try to give the reading a dramatic flair, but who has the time? Thank you for making this
Thank you for the best FF14 retrospective I've seen. This video is amazing. Your work is great.
Thanks a lot! I'm looking forward to making more!
Are you going to do more videos? This was fantastic!
I love the cutscenes with the proper heroes (meaning Meteor and the rest of the ganf from the promotional cutscenes XD)
11:07, "The Twelve are a group of Pantheons in Eorzea."
Somebody tell this man the definition of Pantheon.
Sorry, you'll have to expect some errors like that in my videos as I'm not a native English speaker😅
@@LordAri Oh. My apologies if that came off as rude. But yeah, a pantheon is a group of several gods, so the Elementals/Twelve would be considered a single pantheon, made up of 12 gods.
@@ravenmadd3895No worries! I didn’t take it as rude, but I’ll make sure to try to avoid mistakes like that in the future😆
THATS WHERE THE SMILING GUY GETTING BLOWN UP GIF IS FROM???
I can only imagine how cool it must have been to watch the world around you crumble and burn as Bahamut draws near.
WE NEED PART 2
Exactly what I was looking for.
Im currently starting my FFXIV journey. Im wondering how it was for players when they transitioned. Did there characters reset to level 1 ? Did they have to level through the same content again with a new main story or did ARR add completely new content ?
Man I wish the game went through some of the details you show here, I got into the game this month and was throw in the middle of the post war in ARR and couldn't quite understand a few things about the world.
it made me cry
Just started playing FF14 and I wanted to know the backstory more, since you can't play it anymore.
This was pretty good. and answered a lot questions I had.
Glad it helped :D
i just watched the 7 hours of encrypted duck ff14 1.0 video and i was a little confused, this video help a lot, thank u very much and i hope u bring more in the future.
Absolutely fantastic, however I would ask you raise the cutscene volumes a little, they're very difficult to hear
Thank you! And yeah, I had a bit of trouble with the audio mixing. It sounded fine on my computer, but sounded different once I uploaded it. I'll hopefully have found a way to fix it for the next video!
thank you
Thank you for this ❤
When will you release the next videos ? This is really great work
Thanks so much! I'm not really sure when the next ones are done as they'll need more work than this did. Working slowly but surely on them though, so stay tuned!
@@LordAri Just coming back to say I really hope you haven’t abandoned this project! This was such a good story recap and take all the time you need for the future videos :)
@@guthriehartsfield9499 Definitely not abandoned! Working on my last exam for this semester, so after that one I'll get back to the recap project😊However, I am having some creative difficulties on what I want to cover and how to tell it, so I might have to restart the next video😓
It really means a lot with comments like yours though! It motivates me to keep going and you can be sure I will continue!
thx for this
Thank you for watching!
Excellent content man! So you need to watch videos like this to understand ARR? Does ARR not have any storytelling about this?
I don't think you really *need* to know all this to understand ARR. Although I do think it would help to know who the characters are and what they talk about in ARR. There is the CG animation as the intro and then characters will mention "The Calamity" and you'll get some information about it.
However, when I first played I did not know there was a "1.0" to FFXIV and so everything before the calamity is really hidden in the text of ARR. In my opinion, at least.
I'm glad you enjoyed my video, and I hope it helped give some more info!
@@LordAri ofc it helped! Excellent storytelling man :D
Thank you this is nice
Glad you enjoyed!
I just got ff14 for a black Friday sale so this helped me a lot in getting prepared to jump into the story.
Glad it helped! Enjoy the game!
I didnt know that there was any MMO from FF to begin with ^^°
damn, 41:40, i cant believe Gaius killed Hildibrand too smh
Where does the footage with the player that named their character meteor come from? Because I'd like to watch it.
It’s the official 1.0 recap which was only included in the PS3 version of ARR (as far as I am aware) for some weird reason. The whole thing is on TH-cam though just look up «Waning of the Sixth Sun» and about an hour long video should show up😊
The video started as a slog and got better as it went but you closed that thing out like a boss.
I really wish we could get 1.0 classic with the luxuries of today's game but I know Yoshi P doesn't want to do it.
no wonder ARR kinda sucked bc i was supposed to kinda know the characters and their backstory lmaoooo i find out months later omg
so did Yda die even before the events of 1.0?
also omg the ascians were really not that important
Yda died during the events of the empire conquering Ala Mhigo, so yes
God I hope 7.0's graphic update can make current XIV look even half as pretty as 1.0
Louisoix should be revered by every Eorezian for his sacrifice and triumph over Bahamut, as their existence would have ended without his intervention. Not nearly enough respect given to the man In ARR and beyond. Shame most players today will never know about that story unless they play through coils.
i was there and didn’t even know it. i was a dumb lil 10 year old kid lol picked up ARR seriously two yrs ago
When is the next vid Ari!
Yoshi P. Was really given something terrible and played an absolute blinder with the story and vision he had in mind. Not many developers would actually create a narrative to destroy the world, then break rules of most MMORPGs making hub city's dangerous and having monsters attack your ability to traverse the world. All while that eerie music is playing. The game clearly had problems and was probably bad but the experience must have been something to play through without know what was coming next
shame you never made more videos
how dare you call Godbert Manderville unimportant!
Im so amazed by 1.0 I've heard so much bad about the lore but actually 1.0 lore is much better than most of ff14 now
