  • There are not many desert places on earth that can be called "special"
Sacred to the Navajo Nation, in our opinion Monument Valley is one such place.
If you are ever in the Southwest of the USA don't miss Monument Valley.
    Where to start!
    Geology
The formation of Monument Valley began 300 million years ago as a low depression or basin.
Over geological time several sandstone layers were deposited in the basin.
Over time natures sculptors Wind, Water and Ice slowly eroded away the softer sandstones leaving behind the massive buttes we see today
    Habitation
Ice age Paleo - Indian hunters (12,000 to 6,000 BC) were the earliest inhabitants followed by Archaic hunter gatherers (6,000 BC to AD1)
Next came the Anasazi (1 to 1,300 AD)
Petroglyphs, are one of the earliest forms of human communication.
Monument Valley Petroglyphs are up to 2,000 years old and are attributed to Anasazi artists.
Finally, the Navajo moved into the region around the 15th to 16th centuries.
They developed a pastoral society, living in balance and harmony with the environment.
    Navajo Legends
Navajo elders tell the story of the giant red rock mesas scattered across Monument Valley.
The mesas are the carcasses of defeated monsters slain by the holy people and buried in the sand.
Navajo also believe that the 1,000 feet high East and West Mittens belong to Sacred spiritual beings who watch over the peoples of the Navajo Nation.
The video contains a comprehensive visit around the Valley.
Monument Valley is so spectacular, its only through the medium of video that we can offer some indication of its beauty and splendour.
