I am going to use almost all of them! Loved the tips. I also subscribed to your painting course. (Gold) However after paying with card, I still didn't seem to find the PDF or the actual classes Like the oil over acrylic. Please advise
Thank you so very much! I am a novice painter and I’m open to any advice and tips I can get. I love your palate guide and have already downloaded it. I appreciate the kind demeanor you have; you make wanting to paint an enjoyable hobby. Thank you! Warren
So tonight I took your advice and put out all the colors of the palette. I set out for first color layer on a golden retriever. I threw caution to the wind and just started mixing to see what would surface. I ended up integrating colors I did not originally plan for, and I think I have a stronger portrait than I would have had otherwise. Great advice!
Julie Luten that’s wonderful. Working this way really improved my work, glad you are discovering this for yourself!! Enjoying seeing your course work in the tribe 😉
Lot’s of people have talked about fridge and freezer BUT this is the best ever. If I had the skill I’d cut that bit and repost it. Don’t laugh but when you mentioned coaster I thought how do those ones in the pub work. Under painting, I’ll give that a go once I finish the Bob Ross phase I am in. Thanks Maz.
LOVE the baby oil tip! I don't use any solvents when I paint, so I've been cleaning my brushes with safflower oil. This works well, but safflower oil is a LOT more expensive than baby oil! Definitely going to try this since I have a big bottle of baby oil at home. Thank you!
I couldn't understand what you were saying so I looked it up--Perspex. But would plexiglass work just as well for the pallette? I have the blue covered box to keep my paints in to keep them fresh, but I may make your pallette to put inside the box to organize my colors. Thanks for the tips.
Perspex and plexiglass are the same thing. Putting in the box is a great idea. The inner sheet is free on my website just click explore classes and scroll to the bottom for all the free stuff.
You can get my inner palette sheet free go to my website scroll to the FREE for everyone section you’ll find it there (along with lots of other free things). Https://mazartacademy.com/
loved your tips! i would like to know if i can use Acrylic paint as the under painting to block off certain areas and the continue to build my layers in oil paint .
Yes you can but after some research I’ve realised that you do need to leave acrylic 2-3 days to cure - I’ve always thought it was way quicker than that but it’s not. Check out my video oil over watercolour & you’ll see the articles and research I’ve referred to. It can be done but to be archival and safe give it the curing time (or use watercolour for underpainting which is a traditional 19th century approach again I covered in the video ). Hope this helps.
Thank so much! I really enjoyed your tips. The reason I always avoided painting with oils is the smell of the brush cleaner. Now I can give it another go thnx to you!!! Thank so much❣️
Thank you so much for your tutorials! You’re a great teacher. Love your tip on using baby oil to clean brushes. I usually work in watercolors, but I’m getting back into oils and will definitely use your tips and instructions. Happy and healthy painting!
Love these palette ideas! I just have to figure out how to get it small enough to print! Thanks so much for all of these excellent ideas. Blessings for good health going your way.
Me too! Remember to make sure there is none on your brush when you go to the canvas. It’s for cleaning only and not for using as a medium because it’s non drying. 😁
I recommend Daler Rowney Georgian for starting out I’ve used it for years and still use it for classes. . I started experimenting during the pandemic and These days I’m paying a bit more and I like Gamblin artist oils. But I still think Georgian oils are great. It’s just there is a slight quality difference with artist quality.
Hi Marion. Which hake brush do you recommend I buy for using with gesso & for blending. The tutorials are really helpful. I am now really enjoying using acrylics. Many thanks.❤️
I use terpentine to wash off the paint from the brush while I am painting but as you mentioned it creates headaches etc. Do you use the baby oil while painting to clean your brushes or what do you do. I am knew to your channel and have only watched two of your videos
i use baby oil for cleaning only you must make sure that there is none on the brush - If i have to change colours between these day I have a tiny container of oil medium (usually the lean because it has thinners in) and I dip into that to take off excess paint - between colours you really don’t have to have the brush super clean - then at the end I use the baby oil to clean them properly and if you want to you can finish with soap and water to remove the baby oil (I don’t always tho).
You must have watched "Keeping up appearances" "Hyacinth Bouquet" I have that whole series! Love the baby oil, it really works too! I have two large bottles of it now. Dawn dishwashing liquid and water is wonderful to use as well. Will take oil out of your clothing, to a certain degree, that is. Unless you get into the paint as much as I do. LOL Thank you for the wonderful tips! (Thank you for the free downloads.) That will make my painting life much better. I am going to make a palette like yours/ or knowing me as I do, as close as I can get to it. 🙃
Interesting, but the way I save my paint for the next day is to put it in those little film canisters that held the film that you used to buy....I guess I am old enough to have lots of them! I would say, my best tip is to use a light touch when the paint comes off the brush. Scrubbing the paint to thin on the canvas will only give you bad results. Also, I never glaze anything.....but I am a "take what you get" painter or a "move on" method painter. I guess the real name for what I just said is, Ala Prima style. But look at my last name, I am a Van Gogh freak and he (of course) worked that way! I even double load my brush. A post on that would be nice!
Where do we get a color board like the one you have that shows all the colors to lay out, and the different gray values? I looked on your link. I did not see it in your products.
Learning how to begin with an underpainting has given me a new confidence and consistency when beginning a project. Thank you so much! Your online Pet Portrait course is terrific!
You do give some solid advice. Idk if hairspray is archival? Master’s brush soap is pretty good too for cleaning brushes. Probably don’t use graphite on commissions, we were told in school that it can, over years migrate to the oil painting surface. There are lots of other things to draw with. :)
Marianne Keller I love Daler Rowney Georgian oil. They are classed as student grade but they are very creamy and an excellent quality without a crazy price tag. 😁
Hello lovely lady, above where it says "GRAB YOUR FREE PDF Guide & Free Pallet Sheet Here" there isn't a link, can you give us a link to download your palette please?
Marion, I was having trouble making Dark Brown. I tried Burnt Umber but it was floating on canvas and not covering canvas, and Transparent! I tried green and red mix and then! What should I do? Why this happening with Burnt Umber!

Hi yes! Check out the video in the description box below because I demonstrate how I clean the larger brushes with baby oil - worth a watch to learn how to do it properly😁
Yep. But I only dip the tips of the blender into the oil then fluff up on a clean paper towel. You’ll need to do a few times then always make sure there’s no baby oil left on the brush.
By the way if you block in your underpainting and let it dry 5 days, I think you are better off working in acrylic. But you can put 2 maybe 3 layers of oil on top of each other at the same time. Sure, you will be working wet on wet but I think, you will get more variety in your painting. So I do my base coat and finish color at the same time. Now I am giving my secrets away!
When it dries I find the sketch is plain as day. Yes at first painting over it seems gone but let it dry a bit I still see it. And that is without any fixative. Used charcoal as well.

Who knows why I comment but...if I put out paint that I end up not mixing w/anything I just tap the end of the tube, the paint settles and I put the color back into the tube! Anyway, if you "stretch" out your paint to thin you will be no better then those painters who have TV shows and you can do "non" paintings like they do! When you rework a painting, you talk about using an oil. Can I use linseed oil? Or what oil are you talking about? Thank you!
Yes you can use linseed. I use a product called zest it clear but linseed or walnut oil would do the job.
Thanks for your tips 👋👋👋

For thr baby oil, are you using water oil based pil paint, or pureboul base.
Normal oil. If using water based you can use soap and water on its own.
So you just use baby oil to clean the brushes through out the painting or just at final cleanup?
Marion Dutton, aka, Rock Star, aka, the best instructor on the internet! 😍😍
thank you :-)

Marion, I was having trouble making Dark Brown. I tried Burnt Umber but it was floating on canvas and not covering canvas, and Transparent! I tried green and red mix and then! What should I do? Why this happening with Burnt Umber!
Burnt Umber is a good choose....Raw Umber has green in it! Red and green will make purple.

Sorry, dome brush. Darn spell check! Lol
Yep. But I only dip the tips of the blender into the oil then fluff up on a clean paper towel. You’ll need to do a few times then always make sure there’s no baby oil left on the brush.
How long before it it complete dry. Would you go by touch?
Yes 👍🏻. I literally touch it. White is one of the longest to dry.
Yes I know about the white,,

Why choose baby oil rather than linseed oil for cleaning brushes? Is it mainly the difference in cost or are there other reasons?
Linseed oil is very expensive yes.
Thank you for your reply 😊
And on a similar note, why choose baby oil over plain mineral oil? Johnson's baby oil is just mineral oil and fragrance, with perhaps some Shea and cocoa butter thrown in. Are there advantages to the extra ingredients in baby oils?
I typically use the cheapest I can get from eBay. The brand/smell etc is irrelevant. I buy in bulk from eBay and it’s got no smell.
Beautiful ideas thank you so much
