For a professional painter doing a painting and showing it on TH-cam is probably not a big deal. But what you really learn from that? It's a 50/50 answer. What instead you have been doing in some of your latest movies, has been extremely humble and useful to the viewers. Correcting mistakes without getting assaulted by panic is a fundamental in anything, including painting.

This dude like literally describe my entire process of creating what's supposed to be a master piece but then hating every bit of it in another moment. because you're a perfectionist.

“ Painting can be painful. That’s why we call it PAIN-TING.”
Wow! This resonated in me. I definitely relate to it.

I would also suggest the use of light grit sandpaper to give back some tooth for the new paint to grip to and leveling things out as you said.

I’m not brave enough to do this to my work, even if it is horrible, but after seeing you correcting something that seemed to me a perfect piece of art, i thing I’m going to start correcting my work. Honestly your pieces of advice are the best! Thank you!

I agree - there was nothing wrong there. Reminds me of Portia de Rossi thinking she needed to “improve” her already beautiful face.

Pain-ting indeed.. Nearly threw myself out of the window this weekend.. Been commissioned to paint a portrait from a black and white, super photo shopped, flat (barely 3 values in there) picture.. I can't make it work on oil painting.. But I'm not giving up! This video was great and brought me back from the brink haha!

Omg!😂 The feeling you’re describing is me to a tee!😆😆😆 Always had a love of art. My mom was a great watercolor artist... my bro amazing at cartooning, but I gave up my gift to do things I hate- like work for others for a living. Welp, after 2020 I said NO MORE! Well sort of. I picked up a brush and have been working relentlessly but I don’t have the gift I once had. I mean it comes and goes, but I’m glad I’m not alone. Can’t wait to see more of your technique because your work is fabulous! SUBSCRIBED!

Your definition of an uneven painting surface and mine are night and day 😂. I tend to age my subjects by 15-20 years with my unintentional impastos; Wrinkles and pockmarks abound. Currently Im trying to make my underpainting's a little more little more detailed to help me save some paint (and sanity).

Learning to paint with oils alla prima and what I'm dealing with early on is 'patchiness' - the paint is too thin in certain areas and the dimples of the linen canvas are actually showing through. I guess the solution to this is to 'oil out' the canvas and then to apply another layer? Or should I apply another layer first and then oil out the canvas afterwords?

a good drawing on the canvas before painting solves many of the problems artist face at the beggining that can ruin a painting further along the line thats why i use grid on my drawings to transfer to my canvas then thats one less problem.

Hey Scott, I have a problem with paint build up in one area of face in the lights.
I never use anything with damar but in this second pass I used a well known fat medium that had damar in it . The paint built up very quickly. Not sure why but maybe it’s the sticky damar?
I waited a week and sanded down the area as the palette knife not good on this one.
It worked but there is an area on crest of zygomatic on oblique plane of head that is thicker still. It also is shinier and smoother.
    Someone told me to
use oms very carefully in that spot to take it down? Im scared lol
Shoukd I just wait a few days and paint over the sanded area without medium.
I’ve done this on shadow side.
This stuff doesn’t usually happen but I’ve been working so hard to have 9 paintings in 7 months thst my brain and eyes are not working 😢

I find I have come to the point that if I come to an ugly stage...I can fix this and move forward...this is when you have to be brave and no that this painting will be something that what was originally planned...sometimes you have to accept that to make it a worthwhile painting...but earlier preparation is always valuable
