Male 76. I started with low-carb (>80 g carbs) in 2008 at the recommendation of Dr William Davis. It is NOT a short-term diet. It is a LIFESTYLE. When used as a therapy, it must be closely controlled. If using it for weight loss, it can be quite simple.
I went on strict keto in 2018 and stuck to it. I lost about 50 lbs in 2018 (from 6'2" and 240 lbs to 190 lbs. ) I have had some weight fluctuations but remained below 210 lbs.
On Jan 1 2024 I adopted Carnivore lifestyle. I am currently on Lion lifestyle with added Lamb and Wild Caught Salmon. I weigh 190 lbs and have good muscle mass.

The important meat characteristic is grass-finished for beef. It will be a little smaller and tougher than grain-finished beef. It will have far more nutrients than Grain-finished beef.

My experience is with carnivore and ketovore on and off, I would say mostly carnivore like fish poultry pork and beef. Also with some vegetables. Lost 40pound, lost sleep apnea, lost bad kidneys, lost bad liver, and more. On vegan lifestyle I did get problems with mine intestines. It all resolved on carnivore /ketovore. Also cheese and yoghurt feels good not to forget eggs. 4 to 6 a day. Greetings from the Netherlands

I gained weight on a high fat carnivore. But it did help my health problems. I had to go lower the fat to lose weight. But I don’t think I could ever go back to regular diet. My body doesn’t work well with vegetables and fruits or grains.

When you lowered your fat and upped your protein did you feel worse in any way? I've been high fat carnivore for three years and feel SO much better, but I'm not losing weight. But I've resisted lowering my fat both because I really don't like lean meat, and because I was afraid I wouldn't feel as good eating lower fat.

I have been carnivorous for the last 12mths. It has resolved several metabolic and autoimmune illnesses that I was suffering. They were, type2 diabetes, chrons, psoriasis, sleeplessness, snoring, dandruff, gum disease. This diet alone did this in 1yr. Other ailments also disappeared, high anxiety, waking exhausted, unable to focus for more the 30mins, toe and fingernails are now white and strong instead of yellow and breaking, dark rings under the eyes, skin has great colour.

A lot of people come into this diet after having eaten at a caloric deficit for a long time. The body's response to long-term caloric deficit is well-known: it is to cut energy expenses and make the person hungry so that they eat more. This is why losing weight this way virtually always fails. People are cold, tired and hungry all the time, and need to start reducing their food intake even more to compensate. It's not sustainable long-term. Coming into this diet from that state, yes, there will be weight gain for a couple months initially. It's unfortunate but you need to fix your metabolism first. When you start eating to satiety (super important: aim for satiety, not fullness) your body will know you're getting enough food and won't actively try to keep you fat anymore.

When you listen to most carnivore success stories, people say they can never imagine going back to any other other way of eating. I’ve only been on the carnivore diet for about eight or nine months, but at this point I don’t have any plans of changing what I’m eating now… Just meet and water. There are many examples of people who have done it for five, 10, 25, years and more. And then Maggie the rancher who’s been doing it for 65 years.

A while back i tried carnivore for a month to see if it would help my gut because i have ibs-d and from that standpoint it was amazing. I lost weight, getting down to an ideal weight for me, bloating and gas went away, and it was the best my digestion has been for as long as I can remember. Unfortunately I was exhausted. I had to drink sooo much coffee every day just to keep my eyes open and working out was extremely difficult.

What the other guy said. You ruin your own health for decades eating like garbage and then expect everything to be perfect 100% of the time, all the time, in the span of a few days. It took me months to figure things out, I have health issues spanning my entire life, one of which being ibs-c. Carnivore can unmask a lot of subclinical deficiencies, fyi. I also have fatigue and realised I have hypothyroidism. I have to take iodine cause long story short I can't eat fish, now feeling better. Read more, educate yourself more and don't look for excuses to go back to eating pizza and cakes.

You can eat healthy and not be carnivore. Dont go vegan or any of that. But eat gras fed beef, at least 2x a week, get wild caught salmon, eat at least 2x a week. Buy eggs, organic eggs. Those 3 are the most important foods you can have, add up some fruit you enjoy. Maybe some vegetables like cauliflower and brocolli. When you get in the right nutrients you wont crave processed foods anymore.

I'd be interested to hearing how a carnivore diet fits in with genomics, especially when so many genetic profiles do not seem to do well on a high saturated fats and indicated doing best on PUFAS and MUFAS with complex carbs?
Furthermore, many genomic profiles show the need for high folic acid and support with estrogen clearance which is not really supported on a carnivore diet?
I know from my side I have worked with several clients who suffered the negative consequences of a carnivore diet with hormonal imbalances

From Bryce Wylde: Great question! The carnivore diet, like most "diets" that are popular and trendy may not be a suitable approach for everyone let alone the majority. Nutritional considerations that become lifestyle - not fleeting 'diets' - need to be personalized based on an individual’s genetic profile. Many genetic profiles, as you've noted, do not thrive on high levels of saturated fat, especially in individuals with polymorphisms in genes like APOE or FTO, both of which affect lipid metabolism. These individuals may be predisposed to elevated cholesterol or triglycerides on such a diet. On the other hand, some individuals metabolize fats more efficiently and experience positive outcomes on a carnivore diet, but it's essential to evaluate these variations.
Regarding folic acid and estrogen clearance, certain gene variants (like those with select MTHFR and COMT variants) do require careful consideration of folate status and estrogen metabolism. These nutrients are often sourced from plant-based foods, and thus, a strictly carnivore diet may lack the diversity needed to support optimal methylation and hormone detoxification. Clients with these genetic variants may benefit from strategic supplementation or modifying the carnivore diet to include nutrient dense animal organs, which provide some of these key nutrients, or by incorporating targeted plant based foods without compromising their overall dietary goals.
A carnivore diet can influence hormonal pathways by altering cholesterol metabolism as you illude to, which serves as the backbone for hormone synthesis. In cases where people experience imbalances, adjusting fat intake, particularly the types of fats consumed (like favouring omega-3s and monounsaturated fats), or incorporating specific supplements to support hormonal balance can help mitigate these effects.
Ultimately, genomics via DNA360 testing can offer valuable insights into whether an individual might thrive or struggle on a carnivore diet, and the diet should always be adapted based on individual genetic markers, lab results, and clinical outcomes

It sounds like you need some electrolytes, get a simple non flavoured. You could also try adding some salt to your meals and a little to your water. Moving away from a standard diet to carnivore, the amount salt you are ingesting is reduced to almost 0. This will affect the energy levels a lot. If you get diarrhoea try reducing you fat intake a little at a time. It will take some time to get it right, but once your body learns to burn fat for energy instead or carbs, it will be much easier to manage. Try cutting out all the sugars. It will speed up the transition time.

      From Dr. Varden:
The symptoms you experienced on the carnivore diet, such as chronic diarrhea and lack of energy, are not uncommon. This type of diet, which consists almost entirely of animal-based foods, can lead to a number of metabolic and digestive shifts that might be responsible for your experience. Let's look at some possible reasons for what happened and how you might address them.
      Potential Reasons for Your Symptoms
      Lack of Fiber:
The carnivore diet eliminates plant-based foods, which are primary sources of dietary fiber. Fiber is essential for gut health, as it helps regulate bowel movements and supports the gut microbiome. Without fiber, it's common to experience diarrhea, as the gut may struggle to manage food transit time and water balance.
      Electrolyte Imbalance:
Switching to a low-carb diet, like the carnivore diet, can lead to a rapid loss of electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium) because insulin levels drop and the body excretes more water. This can lead to symptoms like fatigue, weakness, and even digestive disturbances like diarrhea.
      Digestive Adaptation:
It can take time for your digestive system to adapt to the high intake of fats and proteins from animal sources, especially if your diet was previously high in carbohydrates and plant-based foods. During this adaptation period, it's common to experience loose stools and energy fluctuations.
      Absence of Key Nutrients:
Some people may have difficulty converting nutrients from animal foods into energy due to their unique genetic makeup. For instance, if you have variations in genes related to fat metabolism or energy production (such as MTHFR, CPT1A, or UCP1), it might explain why you felt lethargic.
      Recommendations for Improvement
      Increase Electrolytes:
Consider supplementing with electrolytes (sodium, potassium, and magnesium) to help restore balance in your body. You can do this by drinking bone broth, adding salt to your meals, and using a high-quality electrolyte supplement.
      Transition Slowly:
If you're planning to continue with a low-carb approach, consider transitioning more slowly by incorporating some low-carb vegetables to help your gut adapt. This gradual shift can help reduce diarrhea and improve your energy levels by stabilizing your electrolyte levels and supporting your gut health.
      Add More Nutrient-Dense Foods:
Include organ meats, which are rich in essential vitamins and minerals like B vitamins, zinc, and iron, to ensure you're getting all the nutrients you need for energy production and metabolic health.
      Digestive Support:
Support your digestion with digestive enzymes or betaine hydrochloride if you find it hard to digest high amounts of protein and fat. This could help your body break down these foods more efficiently and reduce digestive discomfort.
      Consider a Modified Approach:
You might want to consider a modified carnivore diet like the "ketovore" approach, which combines the benefits of the carnivore diet with small amounts of low-carb vegetables, such as leafy greens and non-starchy vegetables. This can provide fiber for gut health without spiking blood sugar levels.
      Hydration and Proper Fat Intake:
Make sure you are drinking enough water, especially when eating high-protein meals, to help with digestion and to maintain hydration levels. Also, focus on the right balance of fats (like omega-3s from fish and monounsaturated fats from animal sources) to promote sustained energy.
Please remember that I am not your doctor and have no knowledge of your history, genes, etc. This is educational information. Make sure to discuss this with your healthcare practitioner.
