Thanks a lot for discussing it, in my case, I had applied for 476 subsequent visa for my wife and son in December, as the govt has capped the visa so I had to move back leaving Australia for my wife and kid. This was very unfortunate for me as I had investing a lot in getting to Australia and I was waiting for my family to join me.

After this move by the Australian government we have shifted our focus for immigration to Canada because we can't be sure after being granted our 491 visa, Australian government won't say "this visa no longer aligns with our immigration policies;". Great job Karl regarding the SC476.
I also having the problem as 491 non-priority offshore applicant. It has gone already more than 15 months after lodging the visa application. DHA is processing most of the recent applications. But as per the Ministerial Direction 105, they are saying visas will be processed as per the date of lodgement. This is very unfair happen to most of us.

After paying literally 110 thousand Australian dollars to do a research degree in a "Group of 8 university", get completely neglected by two out of three supervisors all along, and then finding out I will not be allowed to stay afterwards, and now seeing that fellow engineers have their 476 applications simply ceased, what is there to expect next?
Coming from an emergent country, I used to think that the inability to trust instituions and governments was something that would not happen so rampantly in a "developed nation".
The great irony is that there is a productivity issue in Australia that becomes very clear when you live here, and at the same time, it is us immigrants who are working full-time, working whilst studying and getting serverly exploited so that the system can keep running smoothly for the first-class members of this society. But I do think that, at the same time that the average Australian thinks that us immigrants are here to ensure they have a good life, they do not care that we are being kicked out without a warning. It's as though there are enough of us, so sacrificing some in the process is no big deal. We are humans, exactly like any "true" aussie.
It may be about time for Australia to stop selling itself to the world as a democratic and welcoming place. Why not just warn us immigrants and say "if you come here, you are doing so at your own discretion and we may change rules and have you out of here if we want"? Then at least we will know what we are signing up for, and will not be super shocked when they throw the curveball.
