so bcz African women of all cultural backgrounds have been wearing headwraps since the beginning of human life, you don't need an invite? for simply wearing a headwrap lol
but also, so many African ppls (the diaspora) are Muslim anyway, so head scarves are cultural as well as religious
you are free to choose for yourself - just know your purpose in it - don't tout it as "hijab", unless your purpose in wearing it is for religion - a religion that you study and practice - or maybe if you choose to visit a mosque, and you want to be respectful of that space (best reason in the world) - and for clarification "hijab" is not only the head scarf, it's also your entire clothing - and even your personal humility - "hijab" simply means "modesty", which can permeate your life so many ways - from clothes, to character - and it also applies to men (though that discussion isn't had NEARLY as much as it is about women) - there's the full coverage vs. headscarf only, while still wearing very tight jeans, right dresses, and tank tops, etc. - which may or may not fit for you, being a non•Muslim - even ppl who are Muslim still dress in less modest ways, and put on a scarf to pray - but may or may not be observing the intention of "hijab", in its most broad definition - it's still up to everyone to choose what works for them - while some feel even makeup and nail polish shouldn't be worn, bcz their definition is more stringent than some - it's really between each person and God - so knowing there's not an exact agreement on how it's done in practice is another reason to find out more about it, to decide what you want to do - AND to understand what that may mean to those who follow the religion
it's the same as wearing an Indigenous feather headdress, or an Indigenous group's warpaint, etc. - if you aren't Indigenous, it might not be ok to "try it on" for experimentation - unless you are there to observe and participate in something you've been invited to do with those who take it seriously
as this person^^^ has invited you, it's still good to be aware of what it really means before you do it - and to be aware of what spaces you may be in - and all that goes with it
the same as blackface, or blackfishing isn't cool - please be aware of your presentation, and how that may affect others
also please think about the expression that "ppl want your rhythm, but none of your blues" - same concept - if you aren't willing to battle it out in the streets over your "hijab", maybe steer clear of wearing it in public? I only say this bcz sadly it's still a reality, that when someone hates what they think you are, they may actually attack you in the street - and that's a very strange place to be, if you aren't even Muslim - please consider, is that kind of seriousness something you're down for?
I'm all for allies - with no emphasis on the "lie•ing" lol - just meaning you can be associated and continue to learn without actually putting on the garb of others
the only other thing is that if you are trying to truly explore Islam as a whole, def read Quran - there are all English translations (or other languages you may read) that you can find out a lot on your own - read up on the history, bcz context is everything - seek out Muslim friends (preferably Muslim scholars, or those who are well studied) who are open to help you by their best understanding - bcz it is easy to be misled is someone you're learning from isn't well read
you can even go to a Masjid with someone for a class - where you can maybe ask questions, and get more info on what it means to be Muslim
the best thing is to be open to learning - and seek those who are open to teach without a heavy hand - you'll find so much good - as well as human imperfection/interpretation that may need to be cleared up

the meaning of Islam in Arabic is Submittion to the Will of Allah. Which would mean every prophet from Adam to Noah to Abraham to Moses to Jesus to Muhammad were all Islamic if you go by that definition. Every era and nation was given messengers and prophets and some came with a book/criteria and were adjusted by the Creator to tailor fit the times and the people. From my understanding. So in Gods eyes that would mean Zoroastrianism, Judaisim, Christianity and Islam are actually one religion which were revelead to different people at different times in history and some people refused to update their criteria when a new prophet came along. Prophet Muhammad actually said the Quran was given to him to validate the Gospels and Torah which in the Quran God refers to Christians and Jews as "people of the scripture". Its the peoples fault that the word of God was divided.

I loved this interview and I want to read and support her book however at around 6:45 she didn't acknowledge that many Muslim people ARE black. Many Africans and even black Americans are Muslim and deal with discrimination based on how they look and their faith.
