  • Got flies? Flies are a very common pest around a farm. Learn how to control them with a simple homemade barrel fly trap. All you need is a few pieces of pvc pipe and a 50 gallon drum. After a few days of use these traps really draw a ton of flies to them, watch and see for yourself.

    I want to see the video of you scooping out 5 gallons of dead fly soup!

      You and everyone else I am sure. lol I may wear my respirator when I scoop them out with one of them pine tree scents you hang from your car mirror inside the mask. 😂 Will be interesting for sure!

      @@GrazingAcresFarm definitely a plan - put that scent in there. Even a gas mask will "leak in" smells if not totally tight. - thanks -

      I trust you shower after or does this smell on you draw flys away from cattle LOL

    Mine is simple, I just wrap two 5 gallon buckets with the sticky fly paper and it gets laoded with flies. The buckets are filled with Rescue Fly trap packets mixed with water. Works great. Each day the sticky paper traps thousands of flies.

    But for that soap, you could take it home and let your chickens clean it out for you.

    you should have the tubes facing upwards, not downwards as fly's fly up...

      The opening is an inch off the surface of the water, and the plexiglass draws them upwards. If they land on the top of the elbows it will take longer for them to crawl to the exit.

    Neat idea! Maybe try a P-trap style (water isolated) drain so you and just add water and flush the dead flies out the side/bottom without having to open the lid. I can't imagine the smell!! LOL

    What i found with water traps like that is it creates more flys then you kill. Ive been using the ranch fly traps in my chicken coup and after two days noticeably less flys.

      I've found if you wait until winter it's not bad at all to dump and wash out with a hose but I totally understand why you say what you did. lol

    Since flies were using the bait to lay eggs, which would later consume the bait , wouldn't it be better to wrap the bait in perhaps fine woven cloth, so the smell of it rotting would get out, but the eggs and larvae could not get through. If you want to attract various kinds of flies, I wonder if including bits of fruit and vegetables would also be good for bait.

  • @Skyfilly

    Put some diatomaceous earth at the bottom and the larva will die too. Good design

    🤮flies are so disgusting!! Thanks for this great idea, I will not do the fly tape because when I did use it, a bat got stuck in it ☹ and they eat flies!! It was sad I tried to save it with oil, not sure if it lived but I said I'd never use that again. I will try the barrel tho thanks!

    • @GrazingAcresFarm
      @GrazingAcresFarm  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh wow, that's not good. It would be a tough call for me, the tape catches thousands of flies when bats aren't flying and the cattle need relief. The barrel works great just don't breathe when your around it. lol

  • @Jamesjghome

    I made one similar but added drain 2” coupling on bottom side with plug. Empty into 5gallon bucket, strain. Flys to chickens, gook juice back into trAp. Gets better each time

    Nifty! Not sure I'd want to tote that around, but definitely something to put up near heavy traffic areas or permanently place on a drag or trailer.

    • @GrazingAcresFarm
      @GrazingAcresFarm  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be honest, toting it around isn't bad until you stop, movement is your friend it creates a breeze. lol I hope after testing it out for a period to make several and keep around the farm, then I wouldn't need to move them. You know it smells bad when you bring it to the paddock next to the cows and they all stop grazing and smell the air.

    How much dishwashing soap did you put in the bottom with the water? I built one last weekend and I added water to about 7 inches and then did about a cup of dishwashing soap....wondering if that was too much?

    Very innovative design with excellent results. It would be helpful to the viewers to know if this fly trap is more effective on biting flies such as deer flies and horse flies or if it is simply attracting house flies. Perhaps both? Please let us know and thank you for a very informative video. Take care.
