This was actually useful and educational. Since no other animal are willing to eat those little flying nuisances, at least now I know how to get back at those pests.

Hi Oriru B-word! LOL. Thanks for the positivity. Yeah, the trap works beautifully and I don't have any biting flies around the house (most are in the trap, hehehe). I did, though, get stung by a yellow jacket while mowing down by the road... not sure what to do about those ground nests... still hurts (one sting).

Thanks for sharing this video is amazing. I was unaware of a horse fly trap we always have issues with those awful pests. Definitely building a trap for our place and my in-laws. Thanks again for the information 👍.

Team Stucker, be sure to see my video from last year that shows how I built the fly trap. I hate those buggers....

Horseflies are not attracted to smell. they are attracted to body heat. You dont need the smelly stuff. What would be best for you is add just a tid bit of dawn dish soap to the water. They will drown. The hole should be smaller (in the cone). If you painted the whole contraption green, tan, etc and just had the black ball - they will end up more on the ball than the trap parts. It is the setup we have and we catch probably 20-30 a day
We also don't have any water.

Hi Pleasant! Thanks for that great info. I now use a red ball so I should go ahead and paint it black. I like your idea of painting the frame green or tan, that makes sense. I'll make these changes next year since I already set everything up. The important thing is that I don't have a biting fly issue while this trap is in operation. This is my 4th year doing this and it works great! Thanks again!

Just a question, Do you think its nesessary to use the trap and toss stinky stuff? It just seems that they will be attracted to the black ball anyway. They wont be atracted to the stinky stuff until theyer already inside the screen. reason I ask is because I sent after the "trap N Toss" but I think It would be more benificial to just hang it somewhere by its self.
    Whats you opinion on this?

    • @homesteadpilgrim

Hi Tim! Great question, I haven't conducted an experiment on using only the the trap n toss but that is certainly designed to trap them by itself. I guess I like the idea of attracting them with motion first, then enticing them to continue into the trap n toss. It doesn't need to have the stinky stuff. My first rendition had only a plastic water pitcher upside down with a screen funnel (see the earlier video of my trap build). My biting flies here in NC absolutely are drawn to motion. When I go running I sometimes have to kill them as they bite me on the run. Having both the ball for motion and the stinky lure have worked so well now for two years and I'm getting ready to set up the trap in a few days with a new ball (old one didn't last) and of course a new trap n toss (tractor supply has them). Good luck with your quest to defeat those dastardly biting flies so you can enjoy the good 'ol out of doors!

Buy some black balloons and Tanglefoot insect spray. Blow up balloons and spray them. Hang up and see amazing results. Videos of this are here on youtube. In one they painted beach balls. I went the cheep route.

Not sure but that does make sense. I have to get another ball for this summer and I'll paint it glossy to test that theory. Thanks for watching!

Yes, i am doing research on flytraps now and it looks as though painting the ball with high gloss is a better attractant. I sent my wife after the paint and ball just a minute ago. Of all the videos i have watched, the one where you built this trap a couple years ago is the best trap in my opinion. Thanks

The flies are actually attracted to the pollen so perhaps it should be left on the ball?

    • @homesteadpilgrim

Hi Cynthia! I'll remember that, it does make sense! I stored the ball in the shed, so no pollen hit it this year. Take care and thanks for watching!

@@homesteadpilgrim I loved watching! I have lived in Florida since 1981. In the current home I reside in, I've lived here for close to 15 years. I never ever had an issue with yellow biting flies until last year. They are pesky little flies that fly rather slowly and I can never catch them! They are constantly getting their blood meal from some part of my body beginning Just before dusk. I have sprayed these nasty little creatures with a half can of flying insect killer and it does absolutely nothing to them except make them angry and more bloodthirsty! I don't know why all of a sudden I have such a bad problem with them. Any ideas why they suddenly appeared?

    • @homesteadpilgrim
      @homesteadpilgrim  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Cynthia, I am here in North Carolina and the only bad flies are horse flies. Not sure what the yellow flies are but they may be distracted by the fly trap if you build one and put it out. This trap has saved me many pints of blood, LOL! You could also put out several Trap-n-Toss traps around your deck or porch. They can be purchased at Tractor Supply or online. They work really well too.

Great idea. I have plenty horse flies, green-eyed biting flies, and plenty of biting yellow pine-flies. Take a look at a video in my channel and tell me if these type flies will fall prey to your fly trap. I think I'm going to build several b/c they start appearing March or April and stay through July or August. The biting yellow files are the nastiest. Thanks for the video. Full-watch and great info👍 .

Hey, Houndsman! Be sure to view the build video of this trap. I hope it helps describe how I constructed it. It works incredibly well. The horse flies were eating me up (one even bites me in the beginning of the build video!) when I was building the well house. I no longer have flies dive-bombing me outside of my house and garage with this trap up. I usually set it up in late May when the flies arrive here in NC. Thanks for watching.

@@homesteadpilgrim Thanks Pilgrim, I'll watch the trap build video. I am in NC as well...so yes....I know exactly what you mean about the biting horse flies. I have them here too and they do NOT play around when they land on you to bite. Thanks. Do you have yellow flies in your area as in my area? I think you saw my video I told you about. It's an older video showing swarms of yellow flies following my truck mirrors.

I can tell you that these NC biting flies do not sting... they bite a chunk out of you! I never get to the sting phase.... it goes directly to the burn phase.

  • @601salsa

Urm...... Fly's are attracted to the smell. Leave the top as mesh but hang the trap inside your mesh cone. The underside I would add a second cone instead of the ball as this will force the flies in but they wont be able to escape.
