- Northern Exposure began as a typical “fish out of water” story, but thanks to a wandering moose, its abstract contemplation of not-so-everyday absurdities, and a colorful cast of characters, the series quickly struck a tone unlike anything viewers had seen before (or since). My favorite tv show at the time and still to this day no show has topped northern exposure for me. The characters, the quality of content, the warmth and the depth are truly a treasure. I miss it!

When I saw that piano sail through the air and hit the ground I remember thinking that was one of the most beautiful things I’d ever seen.
Northern Exposure for me transcends the whole idea of it being just a TV show. It was and is the perfect example of art truly coming to life and giving people an hour at a time to escape the storms of life and enter their world as their guest.

I about lost it when Joel was Franz Kafka in the origin story.
Northern Exposure WAS my family in the 90's. I had a hard and lonely upbringing and spent countless hours hiding away in my room. I couldn't even tell you how I discovered the show but boy did I love it. I would watch reruns on A&E religiously and I never tired of them. Many years later when I had my first daughter I sang the same sweet song to her that Shelly sang to her baby: "Oh, my little bunny face, my cute little cuddly thing..." I loved being able to do that. 16 years later I asked my old partner to find me a good used set of the entire series for my birthday as the show had always stuck with me and he got me an excellent one that came in a neat Alaskan style soft, suede bag. I think it's supposed to be a replica of Fleischman's bag he always carried around. I swear those episodes are so timeless and I just love and appreciate them so much. It's so awesome watching them now that I'm not a teenager and looking at everything through a different lens. One thing that I hadn't realized is that Maurice wasn't just a big old grump and man was he totally hilarious. I wholeheartedly love all the characters but he may be my favorite. I watched the episode where he fires Chris from the radio station cause he gets cranky at him and my Lord was I cracking up so hard. The episode where he sings at Shelly and Holling's wedding? Oh Maurice 😂. What a wonderful freaking show. They absolutely nailed the relationship and buildup between Fleishman and Maggie so perfectly. I adore how they gave us a history on every character and it never got boring, just different; a new tale to always watch and learn from. Marilyn and Fleischman were the yin and yang of dramedy dreams: side splittingly funny and emotionally powerful sometimes with just a look at each other. It was always what was said in the silences with those two and it was magical. The dynamic of the cast really was like living in this small town and being friends and walking amongst these people. Fleischman, Maggie, Shelly and Maurice were the intense ones while Chris, Ed, Holling, Marilyn and Ruth-Anne were more the soft spoken deep thinkers everyone went to for advice. When the town all goes to Ed's movie that he was so stressed about is just a perfect example of what a family they all were. Not to mention those incredible guest appearances, most notably from the beautiful Jessica Lundy as Fleischman's fiance, Diane Delano's spotlessly funny without even trying gruff cop lover to Maurice, and the completely insane performances of the off their rockers woodland couple played by Adam Arkin and Valerie Mahaffey. We even got some Graham Greene action in there. The story arc with Richard Cummings Jr. as Chris' long lost brother Bernard was genius too. The way they mirrored each other so effortlessly was a masterclass in acting. I'm pretty sure the show wasn't really filmed in Alaska but to this day I still want to move there. So many of them are still with us today and doing well but I know Peg Phillips passed on many years back ❤. I am so thankful for this outstanding show. It's my absolute favorite and I know nothing will ever beat it, at least not in my book :') 🧚♂️

I always thought that Ed was the heart of the show. He was the one character that got along with everyone, he was the little brother, the surrogate son as he was an orphan.

When TV is as great as great classic literature, a rare occurrence, you have a show like Northern Exposure.
I found Northern Exposure my freshman year of college in 94/95. They played it every week night at 11:00 on one of the local NH channels and I totally got addicted to it. I think I related to the fish out of water storyline, but also loved the quirky and unexpected intellectualism tastefully scattered throughout the episodes. (I loved the "Chris in the morning" philosophical diatribes)
And I definitely thought Maggie was smoking hot. I remember thinking, "no way Fleishman or any other red blooded American male could ever be that rude to a girl that gorgeous"
Myth was lost in society and then came Northern Exposure - heals everything
It's transcendental and oh so beautiful.
Three of the best moments in the show… Ruth-Ann quoting Terentius “nothing human is alien to me”. Encapsulates the entire ethos of the show. And then when Ed has told someone’s secret to someone else and was wracked with guilt the entire episode… and he hears the priest explain that redemption is available to anyone who genuinely regrets their sin,- just the look on Burrow’s face thru that scene, was so affecting. The best performance of the entire show.
And now that I am in my late 60’s I find myself channeling Maurice and telling people “ Stop sticking Pins in my Doll!”

I find it hard to rewatch because I want to live in Cicely, but I know it's not real. It sometimes depresses me.

@@Wizardofgosz I lived in such a world, back in the 80's, with the original people the show was based upon. It was a wonderful time in Alaska and very much like the show. There are still villages where such a spirit lives on. I recently visited Nome and it was like going back in time. Simply amazing...
Actually Northern Exposure was filmed in Roslyn Washington. The Cascade Mountains. The name of the town is on the building in the opening sequence 🥰

Great to see this reunion though. Such a life affirming show, a rare thing these days . Cicely rules.
I wouldn't say any one Character was the Heart and soul of it, except Rob Morrow did have a little more of a central role as the "outsider' who couldn't fit in than anybody else. Ed was important to the fabric but so was Chris, Maurice, Holling, Shelly, Marylin, Ruth-Anne, Walt, Maggie and who ever else I didn't mention.
@@ClayMationNation absolutely this. That's what made it so special. Fleishman was the hub of the wheel but the spokes supported the hub and made the wheel. Brilliant show and characters.
I think I agree with glamourdaze. No, Ed wasn’t the main star, but he did embody the heat and soul of what the show was all about.
Ed Chigliak was the innocence and the link for all the characters. Everyone loved Ed as a little brother/son.
Ed had a lovely calm about him
The host said she thought that Shelly was the heart and soul of the show, but I always thought it was Ed. He was the most innocent character and in a lot of ways the wisest.

Perhaps the greatest show in the history of TV. Such optimism, with exceptionally written parts, with brilliant, out of this world scenarios, all set in an almost mythical place of exceptional good humor and harmony.
I totally agree with you. I can't watch the shows that are on now. I certainly need some new writers. I can't imagine why anyone would want to watch the shows that are on television.
I agree it was great show. It makes you wonder why there aren't more shows like it, with soul? Either Hollywood has lost its soul or the studios are hiring the wrong writers for the wrong type of shows. Everyone is so narcissistic on television, and smug, sarcastic and fake. Plots revolve around shoving some woke political agenda down our throats too. I'm sick of it. I won't watch anymore if the quality isn't there and it isn't in 95% of shows today.
@vaskylark I agree with you entirely, but it seems to be our world as a whole, unfortunately. I blame it 1 million percent on cellphones and technology. It sucked the light and magic out of everything. It will never be like it was. I'm so thankful I got to experience what arguably might be the last great decade, at least artistically, that there was.
@@lindsaygarcia5212 Yup, I couldn't agree more. I think the 90's was the height of artistic expression in writing and movies and music etc and it's been downhill ever since... Traditions, like family or annual social gatherings mattered. We looked forward to them. Now its not the same and you're right, it is the whole world.
@vaskylark I feel so sorry for my daughters' generation and the ones to come. Mainly I'm sad for what it causes us to miss out on together. We are so far removed from how things were if I didn't know better I wouldn't believe we had all the magic that we did. I think it's cool cause for people like us it was a mindset just as much as it was the art. People are a reflection of their time and vice versa. And man time sure does fly. It makes me happy this little group of us is here. ❤️

Thanks for taking us back to Cicely! And thanks for bringing Adam down, too! Lots of good laughs remembering. The show made you feel like you were a part of the family! Nice to have a reunion like this. Now I have to go back and watch the series again (for the umpteenth time!). Incidentally, we saw "Holling" star in "Shenandoa" on Broadway in 1976. He was fantastic and I will never forget that performance. Some time after Northern Exposure I think was off the air, I heard an interview with John aka Holling on NPR. They were talking about the episode where Shelley was pregnant and could only sing. The director asked Holling if he could sing and he said something like, well, yes, I can sing a little. When they asked him to sing something, he sang in his magnificent Broadway voice, which surprised everyone. They then asked if he could just tone it down a little! He did, and that is what you hear in that episode. I think he mentioned on the interview that he had been on Broadway in Shenandoa and it was then that I realized, to my great surprise, who he was and my jaw just dropped knowing that I had seen him in person. Best show ever made as far as I am concerned.
After all these years, a spinoff featuring Adam would be a hit. I wish there was more of his character in the series.
Yes it seemed like his character had enough stories to last a lifetime! How true they would actually be is a different story 😆. So much fun. I think the characters of Marilyn or Chris could be great leads for a show. They had that special emotive it factor where their vibe just transmitted through the television without saying a word. I feel like we could learn so much from those two. From all of them really. I miss them all.
Favorite show of all time. Wanted to know all these characters. I miss them dearly. Would love to see where they are now.

I found it, but all the main characters in town are dying off, the bar closed, and a lot of idiot trumpers are moving in. It was a very fragile state that never lasts.
When this came on. It was like taking a summer trip to...a get away from it all. A fresh breeze of Alaska air. Love this show still...
Binge watched this series about 10 years ago and it remains one of the best things I've ever seen on TV.. Makes me nostalgic whenever I see clips..

For the record, Northern Exposure was written about my group of friends and a few other citizens who lived in Seward, Alaska back in the 80's and 90's. Though there are reports the show was based on the people of Talkeetna, AK, I'm witness to the fact that the writers stayed with my friend Maggie (the original Maggie) while they wrote about the people they met and observed in Seward. Chris in the Morning was based on Seward's quirky radio host and now college professor, Kurt Dunbar. Ed was loosely based on a man we affectionately called, Spaceman Bruce...

@@starlodear2987 Yes, I spent time with Kurt and Maggie last year while in Washington. I took a quick video at Maggie's home (contains some foul language). Would have to get their permission first, though. I also have some video and many photos of us back in the day. We are all now in our mid sixties...

I was in Melbourne Australia mid 90s when I stumbled across this show aired on Tuesdays somewhere in the 3rd season I discovered it and when they decided to show it from season 1 episode 1 would religiously record It on VHS. I was early 20s push bike city courier living in Elwood. I absolutely cherished this show and could not get enough it.. Now living in Spain, Madrid, I'm 52 and recenty decided to rewatch through a different lens.. I have to say my favorite moment and they're are many is Joel siting in the truck and having a rage fit in the pilot episode punching the roof and steering wheel and honking the horn gets me every time..
I'm so excited the videos are on Amazon prime now. I'm enjoying the show all over again. The best show ever on TV.
Awesome show, great people. One of my favorite scenes is Marilyn and Joel seeing who could go the longest without talking. It’s like a minute and a half, which is an eternity on TV, and it builds like a pressure cooker.,And Joel burst, histerical ,. So freakin funny

This show and the town of Cicely, Alaska reminds me of a place in Michigan called Grand Marais. My family is from the U.P., so my wife & I visit quite often. When driving into Grand Marais, it's like driving into Cicely. I can see all of the characters on the show walking down the street of Grand Marais....there's Ed, and Chris at the radio station talking to Maurice, Maggie & Joel strolling deep into conversation, there's Shelley & H opening the Brick, and Ruth Ann handing a broom to Walt to sweep the sidewalk off, and Marilyn sitting at her desk in Dr. Fleishman's office, doing her knitting, and, and, and....................................It's a quaint little place that keeps all of these characters alive for me. We have all seasons on DVD.

I've recently started watching Northern Exposure again, nearly 30 years after watching it for the first time. What can i say? if you watched it back than, and never since, please do so asap. ❤
Watching this in the 90's made me feel at home. Like it was where I was supposed to be. I've heard it said "captured lightning in a bottle", and they did just that. The writers did a phenomenal job and the cast totally sold their roles. A big thank you to everyone that made this show so great. ❤ Will we ever know what Maggie actually did to help Chris get his voice back? 👀😁 BTW, the show is streaming on Amazon Prime and I currently have S2 E5 paused on my TV while I watched this. Thank you ATX TV for making this. ❤

I honestly like and care about these people.... like Rob said, they merged with their characters. And I don't own a TV... that show I loved and still love. I wish the other main characters were here on stage and also clear and close up interviews.
You know Rob Morrow demanded more money and led to the demise of the series ruining many of these actors careers. They were a great ensemble cast and some of them really didn't do much else afterward. Rob Morrow is a prick and the consensus I believe is the other other actors could not stand him.
joey flynn: I think I remember something like this.. Someone in every show always gets the big head and thinks they can do better or make demands, it often leads to the end of the show. Sorry to hear this..what a good show it was.

The thing that I think no one talks about is that after Morrow left, even though the show had a transition with Paul Provenza the writing got on track after just a few of the "new" episodes. There were some excellent episodes with Paul imo but the network had it in for the show and moved it to a graveyard time slot and it was clear the show was going to end. It's too bad because it seemed like the writers were expanding the show's focus and it was clear they weren't giving up on it. Once they knew the show was cancelled the writers had to force an ending and it derailed the new direction they were going in.
@@honuman39 the show was about Joel not Phil. Yes, some shows were good but not the same. At least they didn't add a superfluous character like the proverbial little kid (for ex. holling and shelley's daughter) and drag it out for 3 more years.
It's why I don't want to see a reboot. It was an incredibly unique and special show. It ended at the right time.
We would love to see a continuation of this show with everyone still living from the original in it. I would also love to see the day they include the ORIGINAL music back into the dvd's / blue ray / streaming. The music was one of the main characters on this show with out a doubt.
I would like to even see the Capra's come back as well. Paul Provenza and Teri Polo
As far as a "continuation" of the show, there are too many of the wonderful original cast who are no longer alive or are unable to appear in a TV production as before. After 25 years, "you can never go home any more", so to speak.

@@dehoedisc7247 I agree 100%!! We still watch the old show weekly but I do not want to see any reboot. Look how many times they have done this and it was not good. Columbo....and others sucked as reboots. And its ironic that it was Rob M that pretty much ended the first one when everyone wanted to go on a few more seasons and the ratings where good enough to do it. Now he wants the reboot. Plus Walt/Ruthann are dead....Maurice and Holling (who is almost 90!) are so aged not sure they would want the grind of TV. And I thought Corbett wanted nothing to do with it again. And the new characters will probably suck.
Was in Roslyn Washington. Was cool to see The Brick, the mural and K-behr. The town itself seemed pretty run down at that time. That was about 20 years ago.
I wish the camera person had zoomed in on the people when they spoke. I would have.
Loved the show.The timing was perfect in my family's life.My brother was in the public health sector of the Navy as a Dr & a Dentist. Lived in Bethal AK for 4 yrs.Help me imagine how my brother was living at the time.Great show/actors.

This show changed my life! I gave it all up and moved to the Pacific Northwest. My daughter saw a few shows when she was younger and is heading out to Alaska!
We need this show now! It has kindness, heart, loss, innocence, and completely different types of people coming together to help each other out. With COVID and the political mess, people are

This is what you call a quality sitcom show. My all time favorite show in the 90's and it ended way too soon, was so bummed to see it go off the air and many years later they still don't show any reruns like allot of old shows.
NX+25. Dr. Joel Fleischman, now a chief surgeon at a major NYC hospital, flies to Anchorage for a conference. He runs into Maggie, now running an air transport service in Anchorage with hubs in Nome, Fairbanks and Cicely.
Don't see it this way. Joel was a changed man finally , even if it is implied he went back to New York, I think he outgrown New York, he might have spent some time there but I rather see this character as expecting something more from life - I can see Joel as Doctor without Borders on UN missions somewhere in Africa or east Asia, spending years there doing something of some added value, maybe adopting a child from there, and then coming to Alaska.... .
So many great moments and characters, but all under the all-knowing gaze of Marilyn, truly a god-like figure who seems to see all, know all!
Right?! I feel like she was the wisest of them all, she just didn't say so or put on airs. I think her character found it quite humorous the trouble people make for themselves, but she probably also knew that that's how they learn. She was brilliant.
Lightning in a bottle TV style! Show had a soothing escapism that was all encompassing. It made you want to live there!
This show was the beginning of meaningful TV. My all time favorite.
Aurora Borealis! Last show of the first season. The show took a distinctively "Castanada-esque" tone. A delightfully cerebral show that I still love and watch today!

I loved the episode where they broke the fourth wall. To me, it made me think the characters are real inside the actors. They broke the fourth wall, but they stayed in character. Joel says obviously we aren't killing Maurice off and you all get the gist. Then the town let's out a disappointed "aww" and Marilyn says, the next scene is pretty good. I loved it.

I was unfamiliar with what ATX was... so I googled it. Apparently, it is a festival in Austin Texas that deals with the medium of Television. So, there is the answer to everyone's first question upon stumbling onto this video. It sounds very interesting. If I may make two suggestions to the event handlers for future events -- one, get a few more mics for everyone. Second, run the audio through a compressor/limiter before uploading to the web. Finally, my favorite part of Northern Exposure was KBHR. I used to have a sweatshirt with the call letters - but someone smoking a cigarette bumped into me, and the sweatshirt was no more. If I ever find a shirt or sweatshirt with the logo again - I will be sure to pick it up. Thanks. Carry on.

That was wonderful. Thanx so much< Janine always repeats the same little stories about the characters, but she gets one wrong. She talks about Maurice's Duality about Ironing Barbara's Underwear... but that was not really part of Maurice's character, it was one episode, and the only reason Maurice was doing that was because he was influenced by the Millions-of-Years-Old Water. : )

I am one of the crazy fan of this show.. gosh.. i am so happy that i can watch some in youtube now.. i have a copy in my old vhs videos when they replay them again before youtube, just to make sure that i will have copies and watch them again..... thank you , thank you, thank you for the beautiful show on earth..

I have the series on VHS, and on DVD, but the DVDs don't have the original music, which was as much a part of the show as any setting or character. I would pay extra to purchase the entire series again with the original music intact. This show had such a huge influence on my life in so many profound ways, it was one of the major reasons I hitchhiked to Alaska at the age of 19 (in 1993) and on my way there, I did stop in Roslyn, WA and got to meet some of the set construction crew, who then let me see the sets in Redmond, where they shot the interiors. And then, on my first night in real Alaska, I watched an episode of NE from my tent while IN ALASKA and that was an unforgettable experience. ♥

I bought the boxed set of all the DVD's of the show & just watched the episode where they flung the piano through the air. The funniest thing I ever saw on TV & i just re-watched it 29 years later.
We were spoiled. NE had so many great characters like Adam, Eve, Maurice, Marilyn, Chris, etc.

One of my favorite shows. All of those episodes come back to me as they discuss them. It would be interesting to see a short series to see what happened to the characters. But, the writing would have to be good. Can they capture lightning in a bottle twice?

Where's Ed Chigliak (Darren E Burrows)? Where's Marilyn Whirlwind (Elaine Miles)? They were such an integral part of Northern Exposure.
One thing to note; Joshua Brand (far left) describes him working for Universal and coming up with the idea for NX, which is untrue. A man by the name of Sandy Veith came up with the concept for NX in the early 80's while working for Universal as well. His concept was not turned into a series while he was still under contract with them, but was turned into a series by the same executives who he worked under approximately a year after his contract had expired. Mr. Veith won a lawsuit against Universal for $10 million. This lawsuit was a large contributing factor to the cancellation of the show after 6 seasons.

I read somewhere that his idea was that an American-Italian doctor goes to a little town on the South. Yes the basic structure is the same, but honestly, execution is everything. Without this exquisite writing it would not be the same
I wish they would do a rival of Northern Exposure!! I know they were working on 1 in 2018 and then CBS canceled the production. I hope they renew it agai would love to see Rob and the others again! 🤞💖💖
I loved it, but I'm glad it ended when it did. After 6 episodes shows tend to get too silly trying to fill time. It was time & I watch it everyday now.
Good job on passing the recorded audio through a compressor before uploading. Otherwise it would be hard to hear everything. For the next one of these, if you need 8 wireless lavs, maybe we can take up a fund. Still happy to have this and run the volume control at home.

We have reruns of the show these days in Israel. It's such a gateway. It calms me down. I used to love that show. It literally saves me now all over again.

Someone these Northern Exposure panels and interviewer's always forgot to invite was William ( Bill ) White who played Dave The Cook. Bill just passed away and was my dear friend. The entire cast would say to you that Bill was everyone's favorite actor on the set, yet panels NEVER invited Bill to speak. Rest in peace Bill Whitefeather.
One of my favorite episodes is where Marilyn met the traveling circus man who didn't talk and he fell in love with her.
Anytime Ed had a girlfriend was a must watch for me
The town of Roslyn is about an hour from me. Been there a number of times. Wonder what that mayor would think now knowing the amount of tourism revenue the community has now.
That show is still better than most of the crap on the airwaves today.
Do they even invite Darren to these things? He was the one trying to create a reboot awhile ago.

I have the box set and love it. Television sure has changed over the last 30 years and it's not an improvement.
I read a comment a number of years ago about NX. The townspeople were supposedly conceived to be all the facets of one complete character. Joel was very rational, Maggie was more of a dreamer and a doer...
