Thanks for sharing this! We watched NE when it was on TV and we watch it every night before bed for the past few weeks. It’s just the best - so like nothing else.
I would probably cry if I ever went there. This show meant so much to me and my family. My sons were little when it was on but we watched and enjoyed it together and still talk about it today. Even though this show was a total artistic triumph it also reminds us how crass and insulting to the intelligence that most other movies and TV shows are. Excellent job capturing these views.
Thanks for the video! The thoughtfulness of the locales and descriptions shows that you're a true fan of the show. I want to make the trip to Roslyn soon. I'm on the east coast and with a 2 year old, it'll be a trek for sure. The show meant a lot to me, so it'll be worth it.
You’re welcome! Definitely worth a visit. Research well, and explore the surrounding area; not only was it utilized for the show, it’s absolutely beautiful!
This was awesome, Michele! Thanks so much for the description and the time you took to write it! I didn’t watch Northern Exposure faithfully, but I did catch quite a few episodes! As always this is what I love about TH-cam - seeing other parts of the world through very talented lenses and perspectives! Have a great week!
And thank YOU, Kat, for taking time to watch, read and leave such thoughtful comments. It’s what fuels the creativity and the desire to keep learning, growing and sharing!
Wow! This is quite the video capturing what you’re capturing it lets us see what we may not ever get the opportunity to ever see due to our lack of being able to physically get there in person. And being in person is really truly the best way to see & grasp the whole experience/process of just what’s been shown on our TVs. Neat!
Thank you Kelley! Actually… there are a few things in the show that were filmed on a soundstage in Redmond, Washington about 90 miles from Roslyn. It was a fun video to make!
@michelemcdanieltravels My wife and I own the NE box set and we watch them over and over its such a gem of a show it never gets old. It's fun to see videos of this charming little town we want to go visit someday!
I got to have the honor of visiting Roslyn. Such a very cool and chill little town. Walked around a little. Took some pictures. Got a few selfies at the mural and got stuffed In The Brick. I was lucky as it was a sunny and warm day. Janine Turner has returned to Roslyn after the series ended for some sort of meet n greets and would have loved to of met her. Thank you Roslyn for a nice time.
What a fun video, I fondly remember the TV show northern exposure. I hope that someday there is a television special or a new ministries of some kind.🙂🇺🇲 12:02
My wife and I came up to Washington for my cousins wedding in Gig Harbor. We had an extra day so we went to Roslyn. Walked around to all of the filming locations that are still around. We had lunch at the brick saw all the houses that were used. Even went into the docs office. We had a great day. I hope people will visit the town for many years to come. It does help the town’s economy.
Wowwwww!!! Thanks for this nice video!! I used to see commercials about Northern Exposure back in the 90s in my country but I wasnt able to understand it since I was just a kid & my parents would tell me it's a horror show & I would get scared whenever I see the Moose. I recently remembered it & I'm watching it every night! currently on Season 5 now. I have a weird crush on Dr. Fleischman! 😂 & I think Maggie is so cool!
Blown away! Very well done video reminicense of Northern Exposure, one of the few network tv series that I took time to step away to and from grad school studies in the early 90s. And I've binge watched the series a few times since then. Thank you for the trip down a pleasant memorary lane, with the then and now perspective. Thanks for taking me back. But where's Morty? P.S., FWIW...many of the exterior and interior scenes remind me of Talkeetna AK and Silverton CO.
@@michelemcdanieltravels Had the good fortune to spend a few days in Talkeetna on several ocassions, walking the streets, staying in local B&Bs, taking a couple of ski plane tours, visting the airport, and enjoying some nice cafes. I thought I was living Northern Exposure for those few days. Enjoyed your video!!
@@michelemcdanieltravels You do great camera work , excellent coverage I really enjoyed the camera angles of that old little town, lot of history there , very well done ! One of those old towns that I want to visit , this one has meaning I feel !
It's been 4 years now since the wife and I and our 2 fur kids visited my daughter in Seattle. We spent the week before 4th of July on the Olympic Penusuila, and the following weekend camped at a state park north of Roslyn. We walked the streets of "Cicely" and I couldn't keep from grinning, probably like an idiot. A local fellow was happy to take our picture in front of the mural, and although the brick wasn't open yet, workers at the side entrance said "Come on in if you want to take some pictures", and we did of course, one at a time 'cause we had the dogs with us. That's small town USA for sure. I wanted a pic of me and the dogs under "The Brick" sign, so my wife crossed the street, took the pic and we moved on to the campground. After the trip google made us a album of our trip, and then we saw that in that pic by the steps of The Brick our "Buddy the Wonder Hound" Had hiked his leg and peed on the trash can. Sorry for the disrespect, but I guess he had to go! It was great to visit, and I would love to return during Moosefest, find the spot where Ruth-Ann was burried and dance there (by the way, my all time favorite tv scene, so I have a reason to return to "Cicely).
What a wonderful story, thank you for sharing it! I hope you make it back one day to do the dance, and you know, Peg Phillips actually had her ashes spread on that exact spot, for real!
Thanks so much for this. I'm heading out for a wedding in Rosylyn and between me and YT I'm more excited that I'll get to see the scenes of NE than the wedding itself. I'll use your video as a guide on all the places I should visit. Anywhere that you didn't mention in the video that are worth a visit? All the places and locations are Google-able? Did I miss the radio station? Where did they fling the piano? And is the laundromat still there? And best place for souvenirs?
@myrealboxmail you’re welcome! Yes you can just Google a filming location map for NE. It’s hard to locate some of the spots based on those alone, but totally doable. I just filmed the most popular ones. Yes the radio station is in the video, but it was moved in 2015 10 feet over to the other side of the flower shop. If you look at an episode you’ll see what I mean. Not sure where they flung the piano! They used the area surrounding Roslyn a lot, mostly near Cle Elum Lake. Thanks for watching and have fun!
Really enjoyed that! Glad I found your post, Michele - thanks for taking the time to put it together. I'm on my second time through the show and still wonder how much of the snow is real and how much was staged. If anyone knows, I'd love to hear the answer.
Thank you, Robert! Most everything outdoors was filmed on location in Roslyn, but some scenes were filmed at or near Cle Elum Lake, (I have a video of a drive there filmed the same day I did this one), also North Bend and Easton WA were used as well. All the town shots were on site. Ruth Ann’s store, the KBHR radio station and Dr. Fleischman’s office were filmed on location, and they actually used false walls depending on the scene. Originally many indoor scenes were filmed on a soundstage in Bellevue WA, but moved to Redmond WA where the remainder of the inside scenes in the series was shot. They tried to use as many on site buildings as possible, but unfortunately they could not use the Brick, and most if not all scenes were filmed in Redmond. At least they got many shots of the building and entrance itself! Just know that all the outdoor scenes are authentic, and it’s a great feel when you visit the town. Thank you again for watching!
@@michelemcdanieltravels Thanks for all that info! Must've been fun to drive though those places. I guess my question though is: was it ever necessary to enhance the real snow in the outdoor shots with artificial snow to achieve a particular look at a particular location?
The weather in Roslyn is quite snowy during winter. But they do have dry years, so maybe they would have trucked some in from Snoqualmie Pass if needed. I can say that I was there in winter when they were shooting a scene in 1995, and the snow was very real!
@@michelemcdanieltravels I'm sure most of it is real - no reason to think otherwise. I'm just curious because I know that shooting scenes can require continuity and weather can change quickly. I picture in my mind a big burly dude in charge of snow continuity that travels around pulling a trailer full of the fake stuff. Haha! I also love the old cars you can see in the background. They have two or maybe three Willys which are way high on the "cool" meter. Those are from the 50's and have a history of being able to go over any terrain no matter how rugged.
