The F35 is a Saab-designed five-speed manual transmission built in Saab’s Gothenburg, Sweden, powertrain plant. This extensively tested manual transmission was originally introduced in the 1984 Saab 9000, and was later used in the Saab 900, 9-3 and 9-5, Saturn Ion Redline, Chevrolet Cobalt SS, Chevrolet HHR SS and various GM/Opel transverse engine front-wheel drive applications.
This video fully explained that why is this car was my first choice of front wheel drive car. Not bad for an American tuner car, and I absolutely love it.😍
Define weak? Clutch maybe but the trans itself is pretty damn strong. I've daily driven mine at 480whp for 5 years now without a single issue other than random sensors.
Not a thing wrong with the transmissions. My 09 LHU swapped, methanol injected SS has 400 HP. Majority of owners are morons that don't know how to drive.
So, I'd like to add/correct a couple things here. It seemed like he roughly knew about the Cobalts and all that, but didn't really know what he was on about. Wall of text incoming First off, a new set of tires every year and a half? Idk what kinda tires he's running but that's a bit excessive. I could see if you were running Advans, or Toyo R888s, or some other street-slick / street performance tire, but for the average tire, that's way too often. Regarding the block, I don't know if it is because the 'sleeves are too thin' on the LNF, but compared to the LSJ (which is the 05-07 SC block), the LNF is the weaker one of the two (although the SC model made less hp at either 220 or 240 I can't remember). The LNF can handle up to around 400whp stock, whereas the LSJ can allegedly hold up to almost 500whp. Stock boost is about 14-15, but as he said, GM had a stage kit to upgrade the ECU and tune to make about 20. The K04 turbo is really not suited for any more than 20. I've heard of many owners trying for 23psi and over, and blowing the turbo or manifold. The transmission, is completely wrong. There is no such thing as the F23 transmission for the Cobalt. Stock, it used a Saab F35 5 speed trans, but you can easily upgrade it to a 6spd F40 trans from the Buick Regals (but gearing is poor). I would maybe brush it past him as possibly an aftermarket trans (it still doesn't exist), but he hasn't done anything to it so yea it's the F35. Maybe he just forgot what the number was or something who knows. And again, regarding the turbo. Oh boy when he mentioned his plans. The reason people go big turbo on this car, is because if they want to make more than around 400-450whp, a big turbo is almost necessary (and then a full engine rebuild at that). 'Its uncommon for people to do twins', because it literally doesn't work. Unless you're planning to strip the entire bay, even then there is no space to realistically put 2 turbos. Hence why a lot of guys either leave it, or do big turbo. And because very few, if any, people would go through that much work with a Cobalt. No offense to the guy, but it seemed like he put on his 'I (think I) know what I'm talking about' cap, knowing it was for a video. Credit to him tho, he was correct about some things. Just not all, which is what learning and correcting is for. Also, that gum chewing was just... eugh
So, I'd like to add/correct a couple things here. It seemed like you roughly know about cobalt's ;-) first stock boost is 15-18psi pending on conditions. The stage 1 kit from gm amped up timing fuel and boost, it was @21psi. There is indeed such a thing as f23 transmissions for the cobalt. It's actually preferred for a lot of high hp balts but the f35 can take one hell of a beating. People don't do twin-charged because it's so problematic, not because there's not enough room. The lnf can take over 400whp no problem, just ask my balt that's been at 487whp for 140,000 miles. What you are referring to is actually the casting of the early lnf blocks in 08 they were foam cast and were indeed weaker but the later years were sand-cast which rid the blocks of those issues. It takes a whole pile of money to get a lsj to a were a stock lnf with a tune is at. The k04 can indeed be pushed to 24-25psi with ease, mine was on the car for 7 years at @25psi. You really don't hear about them being blown up let alone the manifold, that's on the chevy cruises that made the hotside a one-piece with the exhaust manifold, not even close to the same turbo. There is more than a handful of people running lnfs stock bottom end over 450whp with serious miles on them. Oh, and when you race a car and actually push it, a set of tires a summer is not only normal but a necessity.
The tires wear out faster because of camber.... and you are right, its the f35 transmission not the f23. People do both single turbo or twin turbo set ups but its less complex, more cost efficient, and more common to go single turbo. Pretty bad in front of a camera but i do know my car. lol
@@derqatarzan4207 I mean I've never heard of the F23. Ever. Not on ZZP, and not on OTTP either. Just the F40 and F35. Craziest turbo setup I've ever seen was a sidewinder mount or front mount, front facing setup. But those are very rare even then, as they require a ton of work as it is. The reason I mentioned the turbo blowing, is well not only have I heard plenty of stories about it on forums, but allegedly before I bought mine, buddy turned it up to 23psi and then started making rattling noises which a shop just told me is most likely a cracked manifold or gasket. He turned it down to 20psi where it's been ever since. Although that's what I've heard, "allegedly". And yes, performance tires wear out quick, especially racing, but it didn't look like he is doing much racing. Although I could be wrong, I don't know the guy. actually this is true, the pcm has a "learn-down" ability that makes air/fuel adjustments by itself. This was specifically intended for bolt-ons to work without needing a re-tune. Initially this was unique to the cobalt for LNF engines, but GM actually added it to the Saturn Sky Redline and the Pontiac Solstice GXP with a factory tune upgrade from GM that was only about $500 and allowed you to retain your warranty. The Tune was available for all three cars and brought it to 290hp/340tq. It sounds pretty crazy but look it up, there's still literature up on the internet about this "learn-down" functionality

The Chevy Cobalt SS and Pontiac G5 GT really are a nice vehicles. Nowadays, they may not handle quite like the newer Ford Focus ST and Fiesta ST, but Pontiac-Chevy took a solid page out of the Dodge Neon SRT4 and Mitsubishi Eclipse GTS’ recipe book with the powerful forced induction engine tech under the hood. While many other preferred the Subaru Impreza WRX, Acura RSX Type S, Scion tC, Honda Civic Si, Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V, and Toyota Corolla XRS; is the Chevy Cobalt SS definitely stood tall in the absence of the dead Chevy Camero. That Lsjguy it’s the F35 I clarified that on another comment lol. Theres F35, f40 swap, and f23 and all kinds of other shit I forget lol Lnf’s are the way to go. You see more LNF’s on the road than LSJ’s. Those supercharged lsj’s are slow and unreliable.
@@sergnextdoor5213 SC is way better in terms of building, sc block can handle more power it also has port injection and not direct injection slap a turbo on an lsj you can make more power and wax a lnf
@@sergnextdoor5213 lol what. The LSJ motors are reliable asf and I’ve seen plenty of LSJ cars make 500whp on a stock block

Just got one of these and my boost gauge says I got 24lbs of boost...no idea why
Wonder if that thing could take a 10th gen civic...you should go to Mexico and check it out... ;-) Side note: this is your VERY FIRST "race" video...although I'm sure it's HIGHLY edited. :-)
My 07 ss didn’t come with a turbo
They didn't release the Kraken, uh, I mean turbo model until 2008.
I have a plan for you with regards to turbo kit! Sell it for like $6-7k and put a down payment on a C5 Corvette Z06
WRONG!! Between 2005-2007, it was supercharged and between 2008-2010, it was Turbocharged. And its not a f23 but a f35 transmission
I know. Look at my newer videos
@@Camhill182 I will 😜
i have the supercharged😭😭
Nice Cobalt! I like it a lot! 🙃
Get that sucker tuned. Its a totally different car after that.get ahold of zzp for a ecu. Ive modified cars for a while now and ive never felt a car so tamed down from the factory.
the intake makes a big difference without a tune? hmmmm
actually this is true, the pcm has a "learn-down" ability that makes air/fuel adjustments by itself.
Isnt that the supercharger wing?
How the frick do you need new tires every year and a half? Mine makes more than double the power urs does and my tires last longer, and I do not drive nice
tomjw7 mainly cuz Of my camber, it’s my DD, and i drive pretty vigorous . U still on that KO4 turbo?
@@sergnextdoor5213 double ur power on k04? Nope lol I'm on a s257 at 31 psi
tomjw7 nice man, built bottom end / heads?
@@sergnextdoor5213 zzp fully built bottom end and head which is also ported .
such a clean ride
What do you have to change if you want to switch to a auto trans?
A lot lol
lmao why would u want a auto
All fixed :)
Thanks!

It’s a shame that Chevy had so many insane reliability issues and recalls with the car model though: www.cars.com/articles/chevrolet-cobalt-has-long-recall-history-1420663029206/

we're in sacramento
Cameron Hill just wondering since his plate is from there lol

E85 on a Cobalt TC/SS is the way to go!
Lsjt is the way to go lsj block can handle more power and it also has port Injection rather than direct so you won't have fueling issues
john panty I agree, direct injection is great but it will eventually cause problems since the fuel doesn’t clean the valves and intake ports. I raced a automatic LSJ turbo in my LNF at a track and I had to use “no lift shifting” to win.
You're making us Canadians jealous with that e85 talk.
What a beautiful car it is❤️👑

Richard Wallach do you have anything else sarcastic to say while we’re here?

Richard Wallach all the talk but literally no proof my cobalt makes 450 wheel and I have all the proof in the world lol stop hating get off the website if u hate em....
Richard Wallach and btw intakes in turbo cars don’t even matter lol hot or cold that’s what an intercooler is for 😆😆😆 know your stuff me twin turbo busa
The 08s are turbos too. I own an 08 and a 10. Pffffftsssss vroom
All the turbocharged Cobalt's came with K04 turbo stock which is a really good turbo. But they have a really good turbo set up from the factory. AND the motor that's in the cars that have the turbos are originally from the Saab. All in all the Cobalt SS/TC is and extremely good motor and car setup! My Cobalt SS/TC has around 425hp with all stock internals. Anything above that you'll have to start changing stuff.
Comes with a K04 not a R2S.
@@sithsoup yeah your right i meant to put that because i was reading an article and it said that people upgrade to the BW R2S
Supercharged is more reliable n quicker if you turbo the Lsj 👀 and another thing he’s got a f35 /.- idk where you found this dude
That Lsjguy it is the f35, I just got confused since there are cobalts that have the f23 trans. Chill brother lol
F35 trans! This cobalt from factory would destroy the f23
My man was chewing on that gum hard
It's justin timberlake!!

The downside to the sedan model is they were usually a 2.4n/a unless you swap it yourself

260 to the crank is 225 hp to the wheels bro - sorry to break your heart :/
yehuda1990 it’s actually 249whp bone stock. But literally 10 mins on hp tuners and your in the 300’s ez with stock everything.
its about 235-240 to the wheels. On average, its about 10-15% off the crank numbers.
@@sergnextdoor5213 you said 260 crank bro in the vid. Simple math says that either your HP to the wheels that you said in the vid is wrong or the crank numbers are wrong.
yehuda1990 260 crank , around 230-240 whp. HP numbers are never exact. That’s why there’s a general rule of thumb being 10-15% ..
