    Troy love your work, you need to do more of these breakdowns. You should do some John McVae from Fleetwood Mac. Your Roundabout by Yes was awesome as Chris Squire plays with a pick and you play it with your fingers not easy.

    Hey Troy. Thank you for that forensic breakdown of such a classic song. If anyone has been playing bass for any amount of time they would probably have come across this song in a band. It’s funny to see the levels in which our ears learn and hear. I first played this song in a band in 1983. Then again in a band in 2015. The differences in how I played the song are very different now. I’m sure I butchered it in 83’ since i had only been playing a couple years and they didn’t have TH-cam tutorials. We had to simply figure the parts out. In 2015 I heard a much more intricate bass line and played it as such. But even now, your video just pointed out a couple details that I missed. Thanks for this and for helping us all to become not only better, but more accurate players. 🤘😎

      @TJH3113  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was my pleasure. I hope you got something useful from it. It's very true how, as our ears develop, they are able to pick out more and more details. As you alluded to, when I first learned the song as a young player Im sure I was simply satisfied to be able to play a simple majority of correct notes. Now, the pendulum has swung in the complete opposite direction.

      TJH3113 Thank you so much. I'm so happy to hear that. You always make my day. I'm so looking forward to that. When I switched to bass my biggest goals were Vital sign, Sir Duke and Last train to London. Along with A LOT of others. But those 3 were my "must learn" first. Last train, to me has been the hardest, due to that AMAZING disco octave "low high high" (I don't know if there is a name for it ) by far the hardest rhythm to get down so far. But my favorite bass style. It's been a year and a half since my "switch", and I still haven't nailed it. But I practice every day. Also I get sidetracked to all the other amazing videos you put up. I'll always never be able to express my thanks and admiration. All my best wishes Troy.

      TJH3113 ,, oh it was an industrial accident some time ago. A stupid mistake on my part. I always played bass with a pick because Sir Paul did. As did Dave Hope and Chris Squire. My 3 favorite bass players. About 6 years ago I was asked to dust off the bass, rehone,
      my chops and join a cover band. We’re all older relics .😄 I’ve since discovered I really want to develope some finger picking skills for tone. I use my ring, index and thumb. Some of the faster stuff is still hard for me, but I keep trying to improve. I’ve been playing along with Leland Sklar on Dr. My Eyes today. Wow! If you haven’t seen his TH-cam channel, I highly recommend it. Thanks for replying Troy!

      I’m sorry. I must have missed the period after the word “since” in your comment. So I read it as “...been a fan since I lost 1/4” of my finger... Sorry about that. I’m glad you weren’t forced to reinvent your technique. You may have seen me comment before that some of my favorite players were pickers. If I could use one, I definitely would. I’m glad you found your way back to the bass. Take care.

    Hey Troy, One of my favorite songs and I am soaking up all you are teaching. I agree, isolated tracks really show a lot of what is lost in the mix. When you listen to a Chris Squire "Roundabout" iso, you can't believe all the fret clanging, etc. But, that would be common for all bassists that dig in, especially with the Rotos. Awesome job, looking forward to more!

    Brilliant. Your description of Hope's sound being analogous to a piano is precisely how I've felt about many Geddy Lee tracks, and strikingly so Cygnus X-1: Book 1 off Farewell to Kings. The first time I heard it I was maybe eleven or twelve, and I remember being a little spooked, and thinking how it sounded like a grand piano, but much more frightful. I thought there was no way a bass guitar could sound so malevolent and foreboding, especially starting at the 1:24 mark of Prologue. It was as if some evil were about to escape the speaker to attack me.
    Side note: these feelings were greatly compounded the first time I heard E5150 off Black Sabbath's Mob Rules, the most terrifying bass track I've ever heard. I thought the monster emanating from the speakers would literally tear them, and me, to shreds. This was played, I believe, out the back of my brother's friend's Dodge Pacer with custom speakers. Go figure. I was probably fourteen at the time.
    Hope's sound had a distinct and unique snarl, much like Lee, Chris Squire, John Enthwistle, Roger Glover, Gary Thain, Bob Daisley, not to mention many others.
    You seem to be able to emulate the sound most of your covers very well, and quite accurately. Loved your breakdown and all the interesting tidbits and pointers. Thanks for another excellent video!
    P.S. LMAO at "...these are the things that keep me up at night." You poor SOB. I know exactly how that feels!

    Very enjoyable thank you! As an inexperienced player (despite my age of 57) I’ve found its more fun now to work on getting as correct a sound as possible without attending college and learning to read notes again (I can read for a Tuba but the bass is a mystery). Broken down in small bits like this is really fun!

    Lol, 15:00 the lazy guitar player way! We covered that song last summer as part of a medley with Hold On and Dust In The Wind. I fiddled around with that quick middle section on Carry for a long time trying to find the most comfortable and consistent way for me to play it. I tried the lazy guitar player way, but I couldn't do the pull-offs well enough. Ended up doing something similar to what you were doing. I needed this video a 15 months ago! :-D

    Troy, that is a Beautiful Guild. I really need to get me a Bass again and start playing. Out of respect, is there a Bass I can pick up that you would recommend? I am thinking about picking up a used one at a pawn shop, but not sure I do not want a junker tho. Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Richard, the Guilds have become some of my favorite basses. I'm glad to hear you are thinking of getting back to playing the bass, even if it is for your own enjoyment as I do. A bass I would recommend without hesitation would be an Ibanez Talman TMB 100. If you do a TH-cam search for "tjh3113 ibanez talman" you can see a few videos of mine. They retail for $199 new and they are fine basses that I would be proud to play anywhere. Of course, as with any instrument, there may be some differences between basses, so I'd recommend going to a store and trying a few out to find the one that agrees with you most. They make a higher end model that sells for around $600 and a really high end one that goes for $1,200.

    • @TJH3113

      You know, while I always liked Kansas it's only been over the last 8-10 years that I became a much bigger fan after having seen them live a few times. Always loved Dave Hope though. In no particular order, my Top 5 List has Geddy on it, of course, Dave Hope, John Glascock (Jethro Tull), Rick Anderson (The Tubes) and Dan Roberts (Crash Test Dummies). Now, my attraction to Glascock, Anderson, and Roberts is only based off of an album or two's worth of material each, but those albums really resonated with me. Also, oddly enough, Hope, Glascock, and Anderson were all pick players and I credit them with really helping to shape my "sound", if you can call it that, as well as my style of playing. Thanks John.

    • @johnhermann5301
      @johnhermann5301 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      TJH3113, great list, mine almost entire consists of pick players as well despite being a finger style player(mostly), my list in no particular order has John Wetton(King Crimson, Asia), Greg Lake(King Crimson, ELP), Mike Rutherford(Genesis), Dave Hope, Chris Squire whose probably my favorite if I had to chose one for his sound and input to the band(Yes).

      I don't lose any sleep over it. I have a pretty good idea who it is. I think I wrote about it on my "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" video. The thumb rest is actually from Zero-Mod and it's made for a Jazz bass, but it nearly fits this bass. I just had to add one screw hole.
      The isolated track was one that I just found on TH-cam. I think there's a video with just isolated drums as well.

      Yes, I have a few of these basses and they all sound similar, but this one if my favorite. Oddly enough, it was the least expensive and the most beat up. I think it has to do with where the frets are... nearly at the end of their life, and if just grinds a bit more than the others. I use D'Addario EXL220's on nearly all of my basses and always play through one SansAmp pedal or another for tone/EQ.

      @@TJH3113 Thanks for the response, man! I actually just had Prosteels on my bass and after changing them to Warwick strings I gained a lot more punch. I guess it goes to show that there are so much individual factors in play that impact the tone of a particular bass. I guess it’s all about experimenting which is half the fun :)

    “The lazy guitar player way”? What the hell, man!? I remember someone suggesting that you should do some teaching. It’s nice to see that there’s some people pushing you in that direction. (Though, dragged kicking and screaming is probably more accurate 🤣)

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha... no disrespect. I actually played it that way with a band because.... well, the guitar player was lazy. It sounded better with us both playing it that way, so I adapted for the greater good of the song. The last time the part is played during my play through I play it all 4 ways I mentioned and you really don't hear too much of a glaring difference.
      Yes, dragged, kicking and screaming and procrastinating would be correct. I hate to tell you that I put close to 6 hours into it... it was a comedy of errors... fumbling words, forgetting to turn my mic up, Lynn running the vacuum, my neighbor blasting the radio (Reggae nonetheless), my brother in law mowing the lawn, the heat was building...
