Im 4 years late but let me just say this song is a PAIN to sing on time. Singing on a half when you really want to sing with everyone else is harder than most people think...
When I saw this live and realized how the melody was slowly building up to "Someday".... I can't describe the mixture of exuberant joy and goosebumps. Pure musical magic!
I was in the choir for my college's production of hunchback... this piece takes a lot of work but is so worth it, almost cried singing it every show because of how beautiful it sounds (and because it just feels so good to sing a song when you finally feel like you and everyone else knows what you/they're doing)
It's a very impressive, powerful and moving piece. That was written strictly to show off the skill of the choir that's been sitting in the back the entire musical. One production in Canada had the 32 person choir come ON STAGE during the finale WITH the 36 person stage ensemble and they all did the hunchback must have of belting out as hard and as long as you can on the final note 😂. Very powerful. Will always be my favorite musical. I even plan to produce it on Broadway one day.
This sounds like one of those final battles. The heroes are struggling, about to lose. Then the flashbacks start. Just as the heroes' lives are flashing before their eyes, a spark ignites within them. They awaken an untouched power, and make a massive comeback! The world is saved.
DF Channel 11 Superstation This is taken from the soundtrack #11 from the animated film titled "Santuary". This prayer is apart of that whole six minute track.
Annphia Shelton ironically, Ive heard that it’s because the choir is too big! They wouldn’t be able to pay all of the singers or something like that :”(
unbelievable. this could be the next big classic and they’re just sitting on it. GIVE IT A BROADWAY RUN! i get the size of the chorus is “too big” but you better make it work okay.
Lol same. I was jogging the first time I listened to this cast album. When this song came on I sort of had to take a moment to realize "This isn't sweat. It's tears! "
Best parts: 0:47 - Love the momentum here 1:13 - "Out There" segment. I just love this song and I love that they amped it up. 1:49 to pretty much the end. I love the range, and I love "nunquam redono". I heard on Reddit that most of this Latin is a horribly translated version of the original lyrics, but the music itself is still amazing.
I will never forget the moment I heard this live... At first it was just a very impressive Entr'acte, something I leaned back to enjoy, since I love Gregorian style choral music... but when I realized that the melody was building up to "Someday", I was covered in gooseflesh all over and when I THEN realized they were singing 'Olim', which of course is Latin for 'in future times, some day'... I can't even describe that feeling... I felt like crying, laughing and bursting at the same time and that doesn't even half cover it. Pure magic!
Learning this song for our show and it is a beast especially if you're a first soprano. This choir is amazing and they deserve all the praise for making it sound flawless.
I'm doing this show this summer and its absolutely amazing. When I first listened to this song I was like "I'm not going to be able to sing this!", but now I know every word and every part. This is a really fun show to be apart of. I get to be a Romani (Gypsy).
This soundtrack is one of my favorite road trip CDs. There's just an ambience that develops when you're on that stretch of I-84 going through the Columbia River Gorge, with the hammer down and those big basalt cliffs towering overhead, and this track, or "Hellfire", is blasting through the stereo.
I have translated part of the first stanza: Save me master from eternal death on that awful day when the sky moves. Saving, saving. Most of the hunchback latin music is taken from Gregorian chants from the Requiem mass. The libera me domine portion is from a chant whose lyrics mean: Save me master from eternal death on that awful day when the heavens and earth shall be shaken and you shall come to judge the world by fire. I am seized with fear and trembling until the trial is at hand and the wrath to come: when the heavens and earth shall be shaken.
I remember when my vocal director for the show pulled me aside and asked me to do this. I was so scared at first because when I listened to the song I heard just how powerful this song is. I was also put in with so many talented people from the district choir and I thought there’s no way I can do this. But I AM SO HAPPY I DID IT. It’s something I never would’ve thought I could do. I miss performing and I miss doing this show. Such a beautiful song
This choir is incredible. Terror, hope and towards the end... I swear I was in tears by the time we get to the "someday" portion. It's like an orgasm for the senses, or reaching out to the heavens themselves.
Did this show this past summer at my local community theatre (stage manager so I wasn't onstage) and hearing our choir and ensemble do this song live for two weeks every night was incredible. I've done tech for a lot of shows in my theatrical career and this is the only one so far that didn't drive me insane by the end of the run. Did Guys and Dolls last summer and I still can't will myself to listen to the soundtrack!
Okay. Reason I asked is because I live in Boise, and the local group here, Idaho Center for the Performing Arts, did it this last summer for the Idaho Shakespeare Festival.
FYI - Hunchback is being performed at the Kelsey Theater at Mercer Community College the last 2 weeks of October. My son is one of the gargoyles. I am so looking forward to it.
You're gonna love it. I've done a lot of musicals over the years and this is the only one I'm still going back to. We just did it at Ocean County College in July and there's a recording floating around somewhere but we haven't received it yet
I think of this production as adding flour to an already rich sauce to thicken it and develop it. As a composer myself, I can definitely identify with working with a score you've done many years or decades ago, re-examining it and adding new songs and nuance to make it a "more hearty stew".
To this day even thought its been years since I've performed this I'm still drawn back to this song every once in a while. It will be something I never forget
my community is doing this show and i’m in the choir!! soprano 2!! this is probably one of my favorite songs to sing because. god it’s so tiring and so much work but when your standing there on stage in a choir of 50 people singing your HEART out and ALL the attention is on you…. it’s beautiful
I think it's worth noting that out of all the songs in the entire show, Someday is the only song that's melody and liet motif is referred to before the song itself. Almost like the whole show is only leading up to Someday... just some food for thought
We're doing the whole production of hunchback without a choir, so our choir is are ensemble who's doing dancing while singing all of this beautiful music
ALL of the parts go high. I am a bass 2 and my director had me go FALSETTO at the end!!!! FALSETTO!! And I'm a bass! Baritone at The highest! Ridiculously hard piece to perform
Sorry but a VERY skilled 32 person choir singing very loud and powerful and difficult Gregorian style choir music doesn't have any Sex appeal. (JB doesn't either I was just trying to make a point).
THIS CHOIR IS INSANE I LITERALLY CANT STOP REPLYING HUNCHBACK IS MY DRUG
Same!

Same here!

Same here
NO ONE WHO DID THIS SHOW IS COMMENTING ON HOW HARD THIS SONG WAS. I'm tenor 1 and this song stretched my range like TAFFY.
I can relate, I'm a bass and it's pretty difficult when there rarely is a bass part and the baritone part is even higher than I'm familiar with.
The soprano 2 part is so hard to find too!! This song is just difficult all around 😂
PREACH IT!!! this whole show stretched my range O_o
I'm a tenor 2, preach, we double your part half the time, my voice wants to murder me
i forgot to mention: we simplified a lot of the music, so half this song was singing soprano an octave lower...... somehow it was even worse.
When I saw this live and realized how the melody was slowly building up to "Someday".... I can't describe the mixture of exuberant joy and goosebumps. Pure musical magic!
Agreeing to sing for our production of Hunchback was probably one of the best decisions I've ever made
The music is truly beautiful
So much Latin lol

That was really specific lol
Why the hell did this not make it to Broadway?
Annphia Shelton ironically, Ive heard that it’s because the choir is too big! They wouldn’t be able to pay all of the singers or something like that :”(

lunarlena it's quite popular. Assuming they're not going to change anything and ruin it, I'm sure the revenue would pay off the 30 person choir.
aegitrash
If they charged what Hamilton (over)charges they’d be fine.
Schwartz wanted a 200 person choir instead of a 32 person one. And he wouldn't budge. Plus the content is too dark for Disney to put their name on.
Not lying, this part made me cry. Its just that beautiful.
Karen M IKR!!! You know a show is good if u actually cry
Lol same. I was jogging the first time I listened to this cast album. When this song came on I sort of had to take a moment to realize "This isn't sweat. It's tears! "
Pimpernel Lastname That must have been some jog.
I listen to this a lot when I'm out run-walking. Helps with variety and keeping the Zombies away (#ZombieRun FTW!)!

Jennifer Holliday we are doing this show in Bellefontaine Ohio June 22nd, 23rd, and 24th.
Yeah Entr'acte.
This should be played on Broadway and West End
Starwars101 sadly... There are too many cast members to pay and the content is too dark for Disney
Unions didn't allow for the choir and Schwartz (rightfully) wouldn't budge, also Disney will never take a risk in the year of our lord 2021
This is a really complex chorus music.... Impressive.

Wow. That's a lot more grimm than it sounded that's for sure.

Do you live in Idaho, by any chance?
nope, we did it in Toms River, NJ
Okay. Reason I asked is because I live in Boise, and the local group here, Idaho Center for the Performing Arts, did it this last summer for the Idaho Shakespeare Festival.

Now this is how you enter a second act!
I ugly cry, everytime.
God this is beautiful.
That's it. I'm reading a book for once in my life.
This is so brilliant!
This is so brilliant!

Bro I’m doing this musical at my school and this song f’n SLAPS. Took a toll on my voice cuz I’m a tenor tho...
This incorporates some themes from the amazing "Sanctuary" in the movie OST
AMAZING!
AMAZING!
We’re doing this for my choir show at school. Gives me chills everytime
my community is doing this show and i’m in the choir!! soprano 2!! this is probably one of my favorite songs to sing because. god it’s so tiring and so much work but when your standing there on stage in a choir of 50 people singing your HEART out and ALL the attention is on you…. it’s beautiful

Hellfire was all over, too!
What a strange comment, lol. There are plenty of motifs of later songs in The Bells of Notre Dame
We're doing the whole production of hunchback without a choir, so our choir is are ensemble who's doing dancing while singing all of this beautiful music
Did Hunchback a month ago with a cast of 83. This was an incredible piece. Powerful. Haunting.
I look forward to singing this in the Hunchback musical I have :D
This song slaps but is so fucking hard to sing (coming from a first soprano)
I miss this… did the show in 2018
Oh Alan Menken, you really outdid yourself when making this score
amazing!!!
Entr’acte means intermission in French
Awesome!
One of the most difficult song I have ever practiced
the first time I listened to this made me want to cry💀low key glad we didn't use this in our production of Hunchback
Am i in heaven?
My summer stock program is attempting this musical and they expect us to do this whole song and I’m like really scared the alto parts go high 😬
ALL of the parts go high. I am a bass 2 and my director had me go FALSETTO at the end!!!! FALSETTO!! And I'm a bass! Baritone at The highest!
Ridiculously hard piece to perform
Flute part was "wtf why" moment

😢😢😢😢 braavooo
Seriously. I don't understand how people can listen to Justin Bieber-type garbage when things like THIS exist.
Oof, I know right!
Sorry but a VERY skilled 32 person choir singing very loud and powerful and difficult Gregorian style choir music doesn't have any Sex appeal.
(JB doesn't either I was just trying to make a point).

It's all latin?
It’s not exactly coherent Latin, but yes this one is Latin
All in Latin singing?
