  • On September 24th, Richard Dawkins' new book, "An Appetite For Wonder: the Making of a Scientist" released worldwide.
Four days later in Washington DC, Dawkins sat down for a one-hour conversation with Seth Andrews, host of the online community and radio show "The Thinking Atheist," to talk about a variety of subjects...including childhood, music, evolution, apologist "fleas," Christopher Hitchens and the memoir itself.
Thanks to The Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science for making this interview possible. (www.richarddawk...)

Really refreshing to see an interviewer letting Richard complete answering questions, rather than butting in half way through.

Seth is really good. Very nice voice to listen to also. Best thing might be how he is so quick to emphasise that he is not the expert but someone still learning. That is probably ther reason why he let Richard finish He was so eager to learn. I think it's also the best I have ever heard Dawkins since he wasnt being stressed.

When they have no valid evidence with which to respond, they resort to name calling. Thus, anyone who questions the existence of anything supernatural, is called a fool by believers. Their beliefs are so fragile that they become reactionary at the drop of a hat (or a hint😂).

Oddly enough, Santa Clause is how I realized that the bible was just another fantasy. At 13 after I told my dad I was an atheist he asked me to read the bible. When I was done he asked me if I was ready to accept Jesus. I told him it's an interesting story, but it's fiction just like Santa Clause.

Theists don't realise that reading the Bible AFTER your "Bible Glasses" have slipped off is a really good way to push you further into disbelief.

But the thing is, St. Nicholas aka Santa Claus was a real person. He was a monk who actually did make gifts and leave them for people in the village outside the monastery walls. So really Santa claus is more real than Jesus.

It's always been strange to me that Dawkins is pitched as a mean person out to insult and berate people. The man is as gentle as they come. He's as biting and vitriolic as a jar of mayonnaise. But when you dismantles another's worldview, no matter how gently and politely, a narrative is invented about you to convince others that staying away from you is prudent. "Dawkins is mean-hearted and wretched" is a great excuse to not listen to the man. So sad.

Indeed. Truly, the only one of the four horsemen that could even seem that way would have been Christopher Hitchens, hence the Hitchslap, and he is dead. Dan Dennet is soft spoken, Sam Harris is always so calm and rarely raises his voice, speaking rhythm, or intonation, and Ayaan Hirsi Ali isn't too intimidating. The only one alive that could be considered confrontational and kinda a jerk would be Matt Dillahunty, and even he isn't necessarily. He just doesn't let BS carry on for too long, isn't afraid to cut someone short, and dishes back to people the respect they give him.

The more I've been exposed to the same sort of *people* Dawkins has been, some of the most horrible, conniving con artists in religion, the more I can see where that sort of cynicism comes from. It hurts to be attacked by people you're simply trying to convince have been mislead.

3:00 I went to a religious funeral recently for a relative and it was downright disappointing. Her name was mentioned once, copy+pasted into the most generic sermon I had ever listened to (and being religious for 18 years I had heard quite a few). It wasn't an event about her at all. I finally had to excuse myself and hold my own "memorial" of reflecting over her life alone. It just didn't feel right otherwise.

What a sick person you are to think that about others. No atheist would say you are going to burn forever. that takes religion.

They don't have to burn for ever, it's really easy to avoid hell my friend, this is nm to a matter of opinion, this is not a matter of philosophy, this is a matter of a true deity, the real God, the power of God to save, transform and heal! This n it a matter of what you think is right nor what you think is wrong it's a matter of what the word of God says! This is not about religion nor being religious! This is about Jesus dying on the cross! Believe and you will be saved and spared from eternal condemnation. ..

I kind of hate the fact that this interview at: 5/19/2015 only has 48,414 views, while videos with eye-catching titles have hundred of thousands to the millions of views. This NEEDS attention TBH. People love arguments and violence rather than calm, peaceful, and collected interviews/discussions. It's a bit weird, but as observable through human history, I guess it's an evolutionary thing to lean towards the violence. Survival Instinct IMO. I mean look at fights: people swarm over the fighters and try to see the action. An argument in the room, people look and crowd those involved.

I just noticed that the cover art for 'The Selfish Gene" was painted by Desmond Morris, the author of "The Naked Ape" (1967) that described humans as fitting the spectrum of evolution with our similarities to existing apes! Desmond Morris worked for Nobel Prize winner Niko Tinbergen, Dawkins' mentor at Balliol College, Oxford. Morris & Dawkins are both PhD Zoologist/Ethologists ; )
My brother, who was studying in his under-graduate biology courses in '67, gave me a copy of the 'Naked Ape', and had already done a fine job of teaching me about evolution. That book really opened my eyes to the amazing elegance of genetics, and to it's expression in the startling similarities we share with our furry cousins. The first time I learned about evolution, it seemed perfectly plausible to me because I didn't have the yoke of supernatural belief blocking my mind; I'd already been an Atheist (skeptic) for a decade. It made perfect sense.
For 50 years now, I've been fascinated with life sciences, and worked in that field along with biomedical sciences, though mostly as a mechanical engineer. I only became aware of Richard Dawkins about 7 years ago, but have been an admirer ever since!
    I really enjoyed the interview!

When I was a kid I learned a lot about the greek myths, they are very useful as a general education because they are referenced everywhere in ways I can't begin to list. More importantly though, learning about these gods who were clearly believed in by an entire civilization before the supposed birth of christ made it much easier to discount christianity when I was eventually faced with it.
I was thankfully not raised religious at all, if you have kids and aren't a believer please consider teaching or telling your kids myths, it might help them understand religions more easily.

You should look into Canaanite myths. You'll come to see how the Canaanites and early Hebrews were originally polytheists and henotheists long before monotheism became fashionable. It's a bit ironic in a way how Christians and Jews deny evolution and yet their Yahweh worshiping religion seems to have evolved over the centuries.

As a child my family never told me that god does not exit however I quickly picked up that divine superstition is a pathetic explanation for the unknown. Though as a child there were many aspects of evolution such a how a hairy primate becomes a homo sapien I did not understand I did not find divine explanations to be a satisfying answer. The most exciting rush you can get is when you finally find suitable explanations such as small random variations and deep time. As one of Richard Dawkins’s book apply says ...there is a magic in reality.

I agree entirely with Richard Dawkins when he says he finds the whole prospect of eternity frightening.
It's more than enough to think of the universe being so vast and growing vaster at such a rate that we humans could never hope to explore more than a tiny, tiny speck of it. That Humanity could set foot on Mars in my lifetime would be sufficiently gratifying.
But to think of being in Heaven, any Heaven - forever! - grovelling before a deity, being careful of everything I said and did, always scared to criticise or offer opinion, wandering around a garden (probably without being able to change a thing - which would be torture for me as a gardener) and - if the Jehovah's Witnesses are to be believed - eating nothing but fruit. Good grief - fruit forever? Grovelling, praising and fear forever? No thanks! Oblivion at the end of this life would be preferable to any deistic alternative!

Do you have any idea the number of papers God hating so called "scientists" have published on their beliefs "the brain produces the mind"? I knew my brain embodied my intentions instead of causing them when I was about five years old. Stay away from God haters, they'll destroy your intuition.

    1. Evolution and science by definition are not religions because they do not follow faith-based mantras.
    2. How do you know that non-physical things exist without presuming they do beforehand? A properly thinking person doesn't declare anything to exist unless there's rational reasons to support it.
    3. Nice straw man fallacy.
    4. The religious are equally as obsessed with other people's beliefs. You readily dismiss other faiths as nonsense and try to convert them to yours.

Like Donald Nadeau in the comment below I also think that all those people, and many others not named are brave and honest. I particularly admire Seth Andrews though. After all he was once a typically American 6000 year old earth Fundie "lunatic" himself. He was very deeply enmeshed in it being a preacher himself. To have worked out for himself that his indoctrination was wrong and to learn the basics of science is a pretty remarkable thing. But to come out as an atheist is truly remarkably brave of him on many levels. He is interesting, funny, honest, a well known atheist and fights against Christian fundamentalism and religion very vigorously. He's a very interesting person as this interview with Richard Dawkins shows. It's very good to see that some of the leaders of American fundamentalism can actually get themselves out of it and it bodes well for the future. All of his talks, interviews and so on are very interesting and show his great strength of character. I really enjoyed listening to his interview of Richard Dawkins here.

And as an intelligent, well versed and compassionate human being he is perfectly justified, in fact obliged to speak out against the harmful influence of religion on society.

It's sad that Christians think Dawkins is an arrogant man just because he's bold enough to challenge them. The real Dawkins seems like a pretty humble guy.

So often, atheists are speaking to or with passionate theists. It's really refreshing and informative to watch an exchange between two confirmed atheists who are incredibly educated.

I love his concept of what a professor should be to a student. I'd love to go back to college just to have him as a biology prof. I suppose that's why I thoroughly enjoy reading his books -- he's great at inspiring people to learn about the wonder of the subject at hand.

A perspective often overlooked is the second-person projection encountered in I-thou relationships. In such relationships, we relate to others not as an object, but as a subject. Experiencing the other as a subject is incompatible with the notion that others could be mindless zombies. Dynamic relationships need specific foundations in their relata, and the required foundation of I-thou relationships is both parties being subjects.
Richard Dawkins radically encourages his legions of followers to mock & ridicule the sacred, divine & holy people of this world. I've never heard him say one intelligent thing, not a single note of intelligibility "That raises the larger problem of who designed the designer?" No, God is immutable and has no before or after. A cursory understanding of the Summa Theologiae destroys all claims of greatness in Dawkins rants.

    • @DionysusVoice
      @DionysusVoice 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Sounds to me like you've only read his works on religion (which, I might note, is NOT his area of expertise) but never once looked at his writings on biology, ie "The Blind Watchmaker" or "The Ancestor's Tale". There are two aspects to the man, and when you read his writings on biology, this is where he really shines because 1) he knows what he's talking about, and 2) as I said before, he's great at explaining it to people and sharing his wonder and joy in the subject.
Choose to see what you want. I'm sure whatever else I show you, you'll see nothing else.

Thank you for the warm & honest reply. I have a Holy Cross on a mountain (111 years), and it means more to me, your forthrightness, than I can express in words.
It's Dawkins' positions on biology that form the foundation of his religious beliefs, and that's where my focus begins. The last page of The Blind Watchmaker:
However improbably a large scale change may be smaller changes are less improbable. And provided we postulate a sufficiently large series of sufficiently finely graded intermediaries, we shall be able to derive anything from anything else, without invoking astronomical improbabilities.

Your penny analogy does not match what happens with evolution, which is more like a game of Yahtzee or 5-card-draw. If you were to play a hand of either of these and randomly roll dice (or draw cards), then you'd rarely end up with a winning hand, to be sure. But, as are the rules with both games, you can *keep what works*, but discard what doesn't. Evolution works in the exact same way -- the genes that "work" (in this case, are able to survive and have offspring) are the ones that are kept, but the ones that don't work are discarded and rerolled. This is a common misperception of evolution -- some aspects are random, but some are not. A mutation may be random, but it's predictable if the genes for white fur will benefit a bear in the forest vs a bear in the arctic regions: The white bear in the forest will be easily spotted and killed when young, but the one in the arctic will blend in well with the snow and survive. It's not all random as you make it out to be.

      @DionysusVoice 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Oh, and by the way -- As for religion influencing Dawkin's point of view, this may be the case, but it's not necessarily so for many atheists. For that matter, there are plenty of Christians who've learned to balance their faith with the reality of evolution (most notably the Catholic church). Ergo: If you intend to convert people by disproving evolution, you're barking up the wrong tree.

It's great to hear/watch someone interview a person they respect as greatly as Seth respects Richard Dawkins. This was fabulous. I usually have to roll away (I'm in a wheelchair lol) from long videos and come back basically breaking them down into smaller "chunks." I have sat here for the entire 62 minutes without rolling away one time.

He's a gift to the rest of humanity and to my mind, the opposite of the oft- accused arrogant.

One of the best interviews of Richard I have seen yet.
And to this very day, I still feel that the Selfish Gene and the Extended Phenotype were the two most influential books I have ever read. They gave me a depth of thinking about biology and ethology that is unparallelled in value. Sagan gave me deep reverence but Dawkins gave me depth of thought.
    Thank you Richard.
