    Hugely enjoyable.

I know. I sent him a tweet a few weeks back telling him how much I enjoy watching his talks with my two daughters and said it's been a while since his last talk and asked what the deal was. He thanked me for the complement...but didn't answer the question. I suppose this video answered my question but why do I feel like I've heard this one before? I think he reused a lot of material but it happens.

      @kim burley
"if the shoe fits wear it"
If the shoe has a high heel I will not wear it despite its perfect fit.
"you think we came from random chance"
You are not a mind reader but you certainly are presumptuous.
"random chance doesnt produce bilateral symmetry..."
If you tell me that the interplay of atoms is purely a matter of chance then you simply tell me you are profoundly ignorant of physics and chemistry.
      "you love the absurd"
Again your mind reading skills have proven defective.
"you think you can toss 10 million dice..."
I would be willing to bet that you've never actually read Darwin's "Origin of Species" or Dawkin's "Selfish Gene".
If you ever take the trouble to educate yourself the knowledge you gain will go a long way to transforming you into a person worthy of intellectual respect. Right now you come across as totally unworthy and your lack of writing effort indicates you're lazy. I might be wrong there and you might simply be the unlucky victim of circumstance. If that's the case then I wish you good luck.
      Here ends this 'discussion'.

I was raised strict Pentecostal holiness. It did irreparable harm to my sister and some harm to me but I made it Raised my kids less strict but still with Christianity in the forefront. Now that I have wised up and am atheist, my kids are afraid I will influence my grandkids negatively. So I still walk on eggshells around them but if they ask me they get the truth. When I was about ten, I was asked to be the flower girl at a family friends wedding. I don't remember much, because obviously I was just a kid, but what I do remember is the moment when the pastor started talking about submission and obedience on the part of the bride. I remember being really confused, because I'd been raised in a secular household and had always be taught to treat everyone as my equal. Mom grabbed my hand and escorted me out almost immediately.

Seth. Thank You. Words cannot express my gratitude and appreciation for what you do. If not for brave and selfless individuals like yourself many of us would still be living in fear unable to escape our mind’s dissonance. Out of all the outspoken rational thought provokers I want to commend you; your story, background, thoughts, and experiences with your family hit close to home. I am going through the very beginning of my cognitive freedom and what you say resonates with me because I have had so many racing questions about how to confront the inevitable conflict I will have with my family. Seth nobody else had an answer (option) that would help beyond individual freedom, and cross into interpersonal levels with fundamentalist Christian familys. If not for you, many others like myself that are freed but lost in how to handle the very sensitive nature of breaking the news to family would still have an internal conflict moving forward though life. THANK YOU SETH. You are an inspiration to us all and bring me tremendous comfort in knowing Im not alone. You are an outstanding human being and if there was a god, I’m pretty sure you’d be Jesus😁😁

The evolution of the human mind is a fascinating thing. At some point after we became able to think about abstract things and communicate them to others, I guess we took care of the survival things first, primarily tool making skills, and then we invented Gods. Nothing to be embarrassed about, since we had NO information about the real world to work with. Now, we have to make a choice: to study and analyze reality and find concrete answers for how things are, or to go to the completely opposite extreme, which is to believe in a model where there is not only a lack of evidence, but it is actually commanded that we accept it BECAUSE there is no evidence for it. That's not a logical position no matter how you cut it. All of the things we do in the name of religion; beautiful music, charity, morality, etc, can be done just as well without religion. Maybe better.

I am getting ready to come out as an atheist to my family and friends and I was probably going to do it the same way you did at first but hearing your answer to that convinced me to keep it short and make it about me and my journey and not about how wrong they are. Thank you so much for that awesome advice because worrying about what and how I am going to say it has been the main reason why I've waited so long to do it. Just like you the rumors are flying around my family and I want them to hear it from the horses mouth as you said. Thanks again for the great advice. It has really eased my anxiety about it. Love you and what you do. Keep up the good work. The world would be a much better place if more people thought and acted the way you do.

I find that the majority of believers that I discuss atheism and religious nonsense with, all seem to have never really thought about it. They respond with, "You know, that is a good question." or "That is really interesting, I never thought of that." The responses that hit me the hardest are, "I don't believe in evolution." or "People used to live to be 900 years old all the time." I usually end the conversation after that.

All animals and plants change over time. Selective breeding by humans, of plants and animals is evolution. Evolution is why there are different races of humans that was due to geographic separation. Every where you look there is fossil and living evidence that plants and animals can and do change over time. You do not have to take a preacher or prophets word about evolution. It is right in front of you and can see and touch evolution with you own sensory organs humans have evolved over time.

    • @Mike-xi4zt
      @Mike-xi4zt 4 ปีที่แล้ว

There are differ races of people, animals, and plants, and all types of change in genetic traits that are physical or behavioral is a demonstration of evolution. Many of the plant based foods you eat did not exist in their present form a 500 years ago. The only thing you informed me of is your complete ignorance of how all life on earth works. Evolution is happening now it is not just a theory about what happened a long time ago.

Many more agnostics and atheists than we think and know off. On holiday three weeks ago. With most of the people I had short conversations their religions came up. I did not respond to any of them realizing that the camp attracted believers. The one evening however we ended up next to an elderly couple. While waiting for the live band to start the man explained about three times about his church and how he was in an Afrikaans right-wing church and now Methodist because of his wife. I realized that because of the vibe at the holiday resort in South Africa it is important to be a white christian, to be in. I knew we were stuck for the evening and I told him that I am an Atheist. His immediate reply was the following: Strange that you mention that because I am also an Atheist and only attend church because of my wife and our friends" I do not go preaching or advocating but if it comes my way I am proud to announce my position without fear or favor.

I recon this is only "A thing" in the US....in my country and a lot of other western countries things are a lot more secular and relaxed and I personally and I expect most others don't feel the need to "Come out" to ANYONE and no one really cares what you personally believe unless you try to ram your beliefs down someone else's throat (Either way)
There are (of course ) extremists at both ends of the spectrum ....but in my opinion most people lurk in or around the middle somewhere....church attendance in New Zealand has been steadily dropping for decades to the point where you can buy old no longer used churches that have been closed and convert them into houses

I can't imagine having to 'come out' about not believing. If I'd even brought up the subject of religion I'd have been met with yawns and friends leaving the room, bored haha.. I've never believed in god and it's never been a problem. When I've heard stories from people in the US being pushed out of their families after 'coming out', especially in the 21st century I find it absolutely unbelievable!

I became an agnostic many years ago. My one child is quite religious, one is fairly neutral and not sure, the third and eldest is non-theistic and not bothered with it at all. My mother in law, that stays with us, and my wife are religious. They do not want to entertain any talk about religion, but my mother in law frequently reminds me that she is praying for me. I belong to a small sport club and the first time religion came up I told them that I am an Agnostic Eminent Humanist. They knew me for a very long time before I joined and were absolutely baffled. They thought as was a devout and dedicated christian. None declared that they would pray for me. I had to explain the terminology and when I explained that I do not believe in a Muslim, Christian, Jewish or any other deity, two of them said that, that is better. Small town and each believe their church is right and they look down on some other churches.

If people do not like me for what, who and how I am, no problem. However I am surprised how many people respect, or maybe make as if they like me, because I am honest and they know who and what I am. Trouble will start if I try to do Atheist missionary work on them and try to force feed them with my ideas. The other side of the coin is that if anybody takes up the topic I will stand my ground.

Keep an open mind and keep on listening. There will always be two or more perspectives on any topic and each believe that they are right. Not an easy mind to keep when you are looking for the truth. What convinced me long ago was the historical 'facts" about what religions did and are still doing. More than 4 200 different religions and more than 33 000 christian denominations and each believe that their doctrine is the only right religion with all the truths. If I want to believe what test or proof can one get to know which is the right and true believe system. If we choose Christianity, we have a 1 in 33 000 chance to be right.

Since the inception I anticipated each Star Trek episode
with a hope filled heart but
when each was over came away vaguely disappointed,
(the moral lesson previously well understood as
I had long before internalized the lessons clearly
explicated by the Brothers Grimm, H.C.Anderson, 1001 Nights, etc.
as read aloud by my parents),
except for the Picard episode curiously named,
    "The Inner Light",
which was a tiny perfect gem of science fiction and
the only ST episode I have permanently recorded
although compared to everything by Philip K. Dick
    I had read before 1966
    it is very modest.

Hell, I still say "bless you" after a sneeze. At this point I don't think most religious people are actually thinking about "blessing" anyone when they do it. It's like when someone is about to take a test and you say "good luck". Has anyone every not said that, then walked away and thought "Holy fuck! I forgot to wish her luck! She's gonna fail the test now, and it's all my fault!" It's the same thing. Seth's right, these reactionary phrases which were originally religious, are not the hill to die on.
