Finally a video that goes step by step and shows the whole function of every part of this tailgate assist. Even that little black cable guard Because instructions don't even say three in from top of cable And removing limit guard. Very good video in my opinion.
This was one of the first things I installed on my ram and has worked like day one for the past two years. The price is so affordable for what it does and I would, and have, recommended these to any truck owner I know.
I received this same tailgate assist as a gift. I hesitated to install this myself as I thought it may have to be done by a professional. My son and I installed it in about 20 minutes on my Ram. Thanks for posting this instruction.
I had the tail gate hit and drop my daughter when she tried to open it. I got one the next day and it took maybe 10 minutes to install. Very nice operation and I'm going to get another for the other side to help in case of failure.
Thanks for a great video. Would like to add one thing. The factory cables have a " protective " vinyl coat. The plastic will fatigue and crack in cold winter weather in just a couple of years. This caused my wire cables to prefer to bend at the break in the plastic, resulting in the cables themselves breaking at that point. When I replaced mine, I carefully skinned off the vinyl sheath with a pocket knife, then lightly coated the cables with anti seize grease. That was ten years ago. My cables are still in perfect condition. I believe Ford and Chevy use the same type of coated cables.
The perfect product! And at the same time I also bought this tailgate assist. www.amazon.com/IAQWE-Tailgate-Assist-Compatible-Pickup/dp/B07ZNHBC4Z Now this tailgate assist has a 45% discount. Code: 45HGFRTY Safely control the falling speed of the tailgate of my car, and I no longer have to worry about my child and my grandpa being injured by the rapidly falling tailgate, very convenient!
I'd like to add, for removing that factory retainer on the backside of the cable limiter. Use a pair of side cutters, cut it off in about 3 seconds rather than trying to unthread it. Also, that plastic cable clip's purpose is so that the cable doesn't jam in between the bed and the assist shock. It is required, do not perform install without it. I know this because I "tested it" before installing that clip and sure enough my cable jammed between the bed and the shock. Other than that, so far I love it. Good video.
I watch three previous videos, they were difficult to make sense of. Your video on the other hand no I can install mine without any problems. Thank you for sharing
"Like I said, using vise grips." Nearly every time I eventually use vise grips, I feel like it should have occurred to me much sooner to do so. It's like they make them feel so uncool to use that it's the last tool I WANT to reach for, but it really is the tool that most often resolves a problem that I couldn't resolve any other way. Well, that and a hammer.
When removing the "limiter" washer on the tailgate, you enable the cable's metal end to rotate against the painted surface of the tailgate every time it is used... removing the paint and enabling rust and corrosion. Maybe it would be better to just grind off the smaller bend on the limiter washer (not the bend that keys into the tailgate). That way, all the rotating and grinding happens between the galvanized washers instead of abrading the exterior painted surface? Good video, Thanks!
Just installed mine. I liked your solutions but considering this comment I am glad I followed my instructions. They must have changed it up a bit because of this. They tell you to take a hammer and chisel and knock the tab back to flat. It becomes out of the way while leaving the washer in place to keep the cable from rubbing paint off.
I put one on my 2014 Ram and just installed another on my new 2017 Ram. Great product. You forgot the mylar paint protection tape on the inside of the tailgate. It is provided in the kit. Great video!
Thanks to your vid it took me about 10 minutes after getting the tools together. Actually the hardest part was getting that hard plastic sleeve on the cable. For some reason mine fought me. Thanks for the great time saver!
Like a lot of people, I had trouble with the jury-rigged nutsert tool they sent with the kit. There's too much play between the allen bolt and the other components, so when I tried to turn the nut, the washers and bearings got out of alignment and bound causing the whole thing to turn together. Here's the fix: Set up the nutsert tool with the allen head 3/4" from the first washer as per the instructions. Remove the washers and bearings. Wrap about 5-6 turns of electrical tape around the bolt just below the nut where the washers will go. Reinstall the washers and bearings, and trim the extra tape flush with a razor or utility knife. This creates a bushing between the bolt and the washers/bearings so they stay aligned and turn smoothly without binding.
I agree that this is the trickiest part of the installation. First off, the instructions scare you into thinking you will surely strip this and mess it up with their nine turns exactly, mark the nut and don't, don't, don't. First of all the part should be sturdier so that it is mistake proof. Secondly a lot of people will probably do what I first did and that is not make it tight enough when you use the special 'blind nut tool' to set the blind nut. The symptom will be that the ball mount will not screw in - so you may think you stripped the threads. But if you consider how the blind nut is set - if you don't get it tight enough the shorter length of the ball mount screw (compared to the 'blind nut tool' may not reach the threads (think of how the blind nut works in that it pulls the end toward the sheet metal and tightens the nut just like a molly nut works). So go back and insert the 'blind nut tool' again and pull it tighter, now the ball mount will reach and you can tighten it to the 8 pounds torque. Anyway that worked for me. PS: great video.
I watched this video a year or two ago and bought the part last summer. Just installed it today. My kit is different though and i have a 2015 1500 crew cab 5'7 bed
You did good on the shock. That is the correct position not because of the legibility, but because you should place the ram / piston in the down position that way water/ debris fall off .
Go to 3:08 of the video to see the install portion of the video. You're welcome. Now for the next tip watch your volume for some reason another TH-camr thinks they need music blasting louder than the talking portion of the video. You're welcome again.
Nice vid. A few hopefully helpful comments. for the limiter washer, rather than completely removing it, can just use a hammer and a punch to flatten out the limiter tab on the washer. For the nutsert, you can put the thread lock on the threads that pull out the nutsert...make it easier to expand. Last, chalking the tailgate side and bed side where the parts might rub, you can see if there is rubbing by opening and closing to see if any chalk gets removed. If so, put a thin mylar sheet in the area to prevent paint from rubbing off
Your video was the best one I found on how to actually install it , on my instructions they told me to remove the rubber block but you didn’t , is there a reason for that you didn’t ?
I just installed mine best way to deal with the anchor nutsert is tighten it before u put it in the tailgate just enough to get it to hold otherwise it will just keep spinning

I've noticed that all of the ram intallation vids for this tailgate assist are missing some important info (IMHO). Apparently DeeZee has updated this kit and now instead of a ball stud that threads directly into the nutsert they have a ball mount plate( at least in the ram kit)-which is obviously far more robust than the ball stud. I've read posts where some have had it (ball stud)break/snap off. Also read posts where some had trouble getting the nutsert to "set" and it wouldn't anchor itself in but would just keep turning without ever tightening itself into the hole into which it was inserted. The DeeZee vid shows to use some of the blue thread locker included with the kit on the nutsert bolt and to let it dry for at least an hour before attempting to install the nutsert. Check out the vid here; th-cam.com/video/MVS-cEOkEXQ/w-d-xo.html

A couple of things. I bought one on amazon. It was devoid of any Deezee markings. Was supposed to have a clear film in the package and did not. The right angled toed wrnch it came with doesn’t fit my Ram . And everything including this video says it’s a T45 Torx. It is not. It’s a T40. I can not even find a T45. The plastic piece that clamp onto the cable is so loose on my cable it slides up and down. I put a couple of wraps of vinyl electrical tape on either end to keep it in place. I m wondering if Amazon sold me a cheap Chinese knockoff.
I've had a EZdown for my Nissan Frontier for about 2 months. It worked well for about a month. However, the clip the holds the upper mounting in place is really thin and bends when you put the tailgate up. I can't seem to keep the strut from popping off. When it does the tailgate slams down. Any ideas?
I used this video to install mine a while back and need to know how the hydraulic part connects to the joint; was it just pressure? I need to replace my taillight and need to move the hydraulic bar for a minute so I can access the screws holding the taillight in place. I just don’t want to pull on it and break it. I had to remove the hard plastic sleeve from mine. Every time I would close the tailgate, it would push against the strut, popping it off the ball at the end when it would come down. Anyone else with this issue?

@@AnthonyJ350 Lets go to the tape measure scene at 4:20 into the video where you say "from the washer to the HEAD is going to measure 3/4 of an inch". The issue is that the head, itself, is about 3/16 inch long and you are not clear about measuring from the outside end of the head OR the inside of the head. I may sound a bit petty but the head does have two ends.

Does your tailgate have a bigger gap on the left side due to the tailgate assist?
No it doesn't shift over if that's what you're concerned about.
I installed mine, and it pushed the tailgate to the right. Causing a big gap on the driver side
What are the size wrenches your using other than the T 45 please?
anyone know if I can purchase just the nutsert? I messed up putting it in and its warped now. would hate to reorder the whole kit for just that
You'd have to try a fastener store like FASTENAL
Nice done following your video! Great job! Installed in my 2018 Ram 2500

Yours came with instructions ?
Are the taillights tinted or VHT shade sprayed?
Tinted I believe.
You don't need to remove the limiter just take a mallet and flat head and flatten the tab
Thanks for the tip!
Good information
Thanks for watching!
I just tried to install mine today and I can't get past the insert part, my insert keeps moving along with the washers and does not tighten up after the 9 turns, I can pull it right back out of the tailgate, any ides how to keep the insert from spinning? Thanks Mike
I'd have to see a video of what you're dealing with.
MrMikey1224 mine did the same thing.
Howd you get this hooked up with the rubber piece on the inside? I had to get mine out to be able to close my tailgate
They switched some set ups after 2017.
Yours might be a little different than the one in the video
Thank you!
You're welcome!
A +++ video
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video. Easy install.
Glad it helped!
Dope vid man
Thanks!
Why I got this I have bags or a step stool in one hand now can open tailgate one handed!
It makes things so much easier.
Great video on the DeeZee. I have the bacflip vp cover also and will be adding the DeeZee tailgate assist as soon it comes in the mail.
1/4 INCH FROM THE WASHER TO WHICH END OF THE HEAD?
Which part in the video?
@@AnthonyJ350 Lets go to the tape measure scene at 4:20 into the video where you say "from the washer to the HEAD is going to measure 3/4 of an inch". The issue is that the head, itself, is about 3/16 inch long and you are not clear about measuring from the outside end of the head OR the inside of the head.
I may sound a bit petty but the head does have two ends.

The perfect product! And at the same time I also bought this tailgate assist.

Now this tailgate assist has a 45% discount. Code: 45HGFRTY
Safely control the falling speed of the tailgate of my car, and I no longer have to worry about my child and my grandpa being injured by the rapidly falling tailgate, very convenient!
Thanks for watching!
The ball is not screwing in. It’s loose and I cannot get it snug
Did you use vise grips like I did in the video?
Nice looking truck
Thanks, it's my buddy's.
Just installed one on my 03 1500... Problem is I have to push the cable to the right when I shut it otherwise it gets stuck and nearly pops the strut off when trying to open it. Gonna have to install a little bumper so the cable clip can't slip behind the strut I guess
Can the cable pivot? If it's too tight I've seen that happen.
This is 100 times more work than the F150, makes sense.
To be fair, installing one of these isn't really work.
Great video
Thanks for watching!
They make these for GMC Sierra????
+colehman72797 Yup, they're available for all popular pickup truck applications. Just check the link in the description.
Saves the gate from smashing the trailer jack crank handle
That's a really good point!
That is one nice looking truck
