All the coaches OBVIOUSLY take inspiration from the past, but they don't replicate the same things. What did Jose Mourinho say about Gasperini... He is the most difficult coach I have encountered. He changed his plan four times during the match... Mourinho was coaching Inter Milan, with whom he won the league and the Champions League
Yeah that Genoa team was something else. Its weird seeing the world suddenly rate Gasperini because he beat Liverpool, again, even though he's doing exactly the same thing he was doing 15 years ago. And hasn't lost a hair from his head since, either. And when you look at the players that have moved on to bigger things, except for a few like Milito, they've all been failures. Really highlights that the success is due to his method and his training getting the best out of the players, rather than their individual qualities. Nets a tidy a profit, too.
The impressive thing about Gasp is not only his immense coaching knowledge (his adaptability is incredible) but also his ability to make players grow (such as Hojlund, Bastoni, Lookman, De Kaeteleare, Scalvini)
@@matteoinvernazzi4331here after Lookman scored three in the Europa League final. Gasperini is just great. Football was owing him a title, it would be a shame if he never won anything despite being that good
Won the treble. Praised Gasperini the most throughout every press conference. Suggested him as a replacement, instead of Benitez. That is what Mourinho did
Atalanta's games are fun to watch. In Europe the team plays much better than in Italy. Italian referees tend to whistle to much, the other Italian teams know that and try to slow down their rhythm. Atalanta loves playing at high intensity - no dive, no time waste - only great football.
Gasperini system is indeed powerful, but the most unenjoyable way to play team sport like football, known as total football system. It is old, discarded long ago when no fan is willing no more to pay money to see the game. Every fan shall know better before euphorizing Gasprini.
This is absolutely not the case, tacticalism in Italy is historically much stronger than in other areas of Europe. In Europe the majority of teams accept the game openly, fielding offensive teams and always setting the game the same way regardless of the opponent. Instead, the majority of Italian coaches, together with a few others (such as Mou and Tuchel) adopt even drastic changes from one week to the next based on the opponent. If it is true that Atalanta destroys attacking teams, it is equally true that they sometimes have difficulty with defensive teams or very physically strong teams and in 1vs1 matches. In my opinion, in the final we saw all the inexperience of Alonso, who, apart from inserting a physical striker like Boniface, did not prepare the match in any way, a plan B. On the other hand, Gasperini surprisingly fielded an even more attacking team and crushed Bayer
Atalanta played 4 games like that against Sporting de Portugal ( 2 draws and 2 win for Atalanta, 2 at stage group and the other 2 in the 1/4 finals) after they beat us ( sporting ) I was pretty sure that they will win the cup... Never seen a team playing like that...
It was an excellent season, a lot of goals and a match with PSG to go to the semifinal of Champion League. Atalanta is now oficcialy one of the best european teams.

I think Gasperini is one of those coaches who does better at a smaller club. Similar to Sarri, he is so demanding in the way he wants things done, I don't know if his personality would mesh well with a team full of bigger stars.
Spot on! I watched this analysis the night before the Leverkusen - Atalanta final and your analysis was eerily accurate. Impressive! You should be a coach.
Does not matter if he is coaching a big club or a smaller one. Important is that his squad fits to his idea. If the club is scouting just skillful, stylish players (like most big clubs) he can't succeed. His idea depends so much on phisicality and in winning 1:1 situations in offense and defence that he can not be successful if there are more then two players without an outstanding athletic. The advantage of this kind of players is, that they are difficult to beat even if they have not their best day. In addition they are always dangerous in corner kicks and freekicks. For me Gasperini is like a modern, more attractive Otto Rehagel. And Rehagel at Bayern did not work bc Bayern were always looking to have more then just 1-2 creative players in the starting 11. Because of that it will be good for him to stay at Atalanta or goes at some point to another club which has more a traditional working mentality.
The praise showered by Mourinho no less on Gasperini says it all. "He is one of the strongest coaches I have faced. Constantly adapting plans within the match". This was a decade and half back
Watched this video twice before and after the uel final. And boy they gave Leverkusen no breathing room. Incredible manage Gasperini is. 3 incredible goals by Lookman too

Hojlund, Caldara, Gagliardini, Kessie, Kulusevski, Gosens, Diallo, Boga, Demiral, Barrow, Ibanez... Alonso took a lot from him. Bayer press man to man in the final half and zonal in their half. Bayer use the wing to wing movement that Gasperini trademarked. Bayer also uses the positional interchange in attacking phase, though Grimaldo is more of a crosser, whilst Gosens (for example) was more of an incursore. Also a difference in playmaking. Alonso uses Xhaka, who builds from deep, and Gasperini relies on AMF playmakers (Ilicic, Gomez, Malinovski, Miranchuk or Koopmeiners)

Amazing video mate, of a team who’s indeed very difficult to characterise as they vary so much! I think maybe something that you could have included is their “external” buildup: often Ederson and De Roon would open up wide in the flanks, with the wing backs pushing forward, which depending on the opposition’s formation could force them to either press and leave huge gaps, or suffer from their passing ability (for example with those more direct balls for players up front). This + their external CBs passing capacity makes it really hard to press Atalanta. Their buildup in the matches vs Sporting are a good example. But again, great job in analyzing Gasperini’s work this season!

Gasp had 1 chance at inter after benitez in 2011, so tbh i think it is better for him to end his carreer at atalanta and become immortal there. Although the bergamo team does not have the money to truly contend with the bigs of italy in the last few years their spending power has improved, just take scamacca as an example, which had inter interested to buy. I am glad gasp gets the recognition he deserves. He is the main reason the 3 man defensive line had a resurgence in the last decade. While both conte and inzaghi have their own interpretation of the structure and have achieved more with it, the one that made it viable in the modern meta is him. In fact in 2011 he got the inter gig because his 352 at genoa was as tough to deal with as atalanta is nowadays, sadly the results at inter were poor. And i also remember that conte was on the verge of being sacked when he tried the 352 at juve, in 2012. As for inzaghi, his preferred structure was the 433 in his early days at lazio, he fell on the 352 for balance in 2016/17. He basically is the grandpa of the 352

Excellent analysis of Atalanta which proved so true in their spectacular Europa League Final win. It does not seem Xavi Alonso watched your video. Maybe now coaches will check with you first before they set up their game strategy. The final was a master class of Gasperini... a true veteran of the sport... and you propose a very insightful question.... Would his tactics work with one of the big well-established teams or is it only for teams that fluctuate players every season? It seems Casperini's tactics would work with a national team. Is he ready for AC Milan or Juventus? The best soccer is where coaches are free to dream without any pressure from executives. Big teams do not allow that. Bravo Atalanta and Gasperini... you amazed the world!!!
Hi guys, great video. I am italian and as somebody pointed out in the comments, Gasperini would never go to a bigger club, neither for more money nor to coach "football stars", after he meticolously spent decades to craft his own way of coaching Atalanta. My thought is that he is going to spend all of his last career's years in Bergamo. This is also the reason why Gasperini has built his own ego at Atalanta making him become one of the most rigorous managers in Italy, and if you as a football player get into a verbal discussion with him, the chance you get exonerated or sold are immense (see what happened to Papu Gomez years ago, he was one of the stars of the early rising Atalanta).
Brilliant explanation. I always believe possession of the ball is only a way to play football , no the way to play football. Atalanta shows vertical football with not possession works.
Gasp is 66 and I think that if he wins a cup, he's gonna retire. His work in Atalanta will be remembered for ages to come, a man who could pick a guy who paid 1,5 million (Gosens) and sold it for 30 for his improvements over the years. Gasperini has been the top manager in improving players of this generation.
He is a tactical coach. You cannot predict the game plan he will play with. Despite this, Atalanta’s style is fun to watch....I hope he will be under the microscope of Manchester United or perhaps Bayern Munich.
In Italy it's a common taught that the way Inzaghi, Pioli, Allegri, Spalletti and all those "top club managers" evolved their game, it's because of Gasperini's tactics. Everybody here knows this. The most evidence is the way Inter plays: Just to counter Atalanta defensive system.
The fact that he has been at Atalanta for eight seasons in a league where coaches last just over one season on average (384 days to be exact) speaks volumes. However it has to be said that Atalanta are a club with fairly low expectations so exceeding them isn't clearing a very high bar. Their Europa league form has been off the charts this season though so credit where credit is due....
I don’t think it’s as clear cut. Liverpool’s best players have had medical issues, stress and struggle with inconsistency towards the end of the season these last few years. Leverkusen is a great pressing team as well. The only issue is that Gasperini is one of the most adaptable manager in world football at the moment in spite of his age, and you just don’t know what’s coming.
Gasperini system is indeed powerful, but the most unenjoyable way to play team sport like football, known as total football system. It is old, discarded long ago when no fan is willing no more to pay money to see the game. Every fan shall know better before euphorizing Gasprini.
If you want to play under Gasperini , you must be willing to follow every instruction to the letter . In other words be extremely disciplined. It seems exhausting from players' perspective ,but it has worked wonders . The chemistry and coordination developed by this atalanta side can not be achieved over night and without discipline. This was the reason i believe Papu Gomez fell out with Gasperini . Gomez complained of being micromanaged and not having the freedom to play the way he wanted . However with Gasperini there is no compromise . Atalanta would rather get rid of their star players than forsake their rigorous high intense pressing style which defines them as a team
So many managers succeed because of a bunch of players but once they are gone struggle to perform (Klop failed to replace Mane & Firminho) but Gasperini was able to replace Zapata, Muriel & Ilicic with Lookman & Scamacca 🎉
I have been following you since the time you had 2k subscribers or something. Nice to see your tactics knowledge and the overall quality of your videos getting much better over time. Keep up the good work.

As a Milan fan I am glad Gasperini turned CDK into the youg player he should at have been at Milan. Pioli could not do it because he is an extremely overvalued coach. Milan would be great with Gasperini but our ownership could never handle such brave tactics 🔴⚫
Turns out we the solution was playing players on their preferred positions(apart from Gallagher) and letting them rotate according to each other's needs
Gasperini says he feels like been married with kids and meeting a beautiful woman so he is in a dilemma. Family vs adventure. Family no question after all family is what brought you here.
Hi. Please do a video about Ac Milan and Pioli. I really want to understand its tactics and the reasons for its ups and downs this season (and the previous one). Thank you.
I don't think Pioli has changed so much in these 2-3 years and this season has been good IMHO. Anyway, there 3 crucial elements in the downfall from the scudetto season. 1) a lot muscle injuries 2)never replaced Tonali and no backup for Giroud 3) lack of trust between playesr, manager and Milan board.
Pioli doesn’t have tactics. But for your question the problem is Milan didn’t get a replacement for kessie and then sold tonali. Pioli “system “doesn’t use technical players his system is built on the high press. Hence why in the scudetto season tonali and kessie were the starting midfield with their physicality and then Milan took advantage of tomori and kalulu speed so no others remand could really beat them in behind
@@EdoCFH I fully agree with you. I'm assuming that the injuries and the personal mistakes of the players were the most important reasons for the downfalls, but I really want to see an analysis performed by Football Meta
Not replacing Tonali, older Giroud (that still does well), having players that suffer from the pressure in big games (like Pulisic) and most importantly the injuries are the main reasons Milan had a bad season. From the tactical point of view he plays his CBs too much offensively so unless the defender does a good save while returning in his position the opposite team can punish the team instantly. Pioli was successful when his defenders could keep up with this style of play (especially Tomori who was injured for like 6 months) and Maignan was so good that he could save the shots that got through the defense. His style of play is not that bad, in fact if goes to Napoli next season as rumoured I think he will do well, but you can't afford to have so many backup players because your style of play injure the main ones, the players need to play together to have a better chemistry they can't play 1 months together then another one plays because someone got injured. Moreover he is not good at managing immature players like CDK, Chukwueze and Musah. Gasperini would turn Musah in a defensive machine that plays the games for 90 minutes.
Albeit he's mellowed down a lot since his Inter days his philosophy still requires high intensity training sessions and a complete buy in from his players to be effective. The slightest issue and whole system falls. Kinda like Emery, I think Gasperini can bring a mid table team to challange for great things with his tactics and philosophy, but will struggle, in big teams, to get lots of big personalities to do the same and end up not achieving the same levels
Gasperini has always been underrated , which may depend on a carachter not willing to compromise . The outcome is that a he's now almost 66 years old and will spend the rest of his career at Atalanta .
Gasperini's been implementing & successfully developing this ultra offensive football style for many more years than just these 8 seasons with LA Dea! Most evident was with Genoa, when he took them to 4th place and gave them UCL season, more than 10 years ago. He's one of the main reasons (along with coaches like Sarri, Zeman...) who spawned many Italian coaches who play very offensively in Serie A, from Juric to Motta and. who knows how. many more in between, which made the unimaginable real = to. convert Serie A (and Italian football in general) from strictly defensive minded (and slow and. boring) into one of the most offensive and goal prolific leagues in these 10 years! And the things he's been doing with Atalanta, makes. me wanna answer ur question from the end of the video right away - I'd love to see him be at the helm of La Dea for many more years. Not just that he converted them into goal scoring machine, but also be great entertainers - I've yet to see an Atalanta match that's boring, even in those rare occasions when it finishes 0-0. And he's been present in Europe all the time (either UCL, or EL) with great success, sometimes even crushing teams with many scored goals. And all of that, with selling some of the best players each summer Mercato, but for huge amounts of money, which allows them. to reinvest. And along with their brilliant academy (one of the top 3 in Europe for years now), their scouting system is nearly perfect, so they always invest those money cleverly.. Just look at the last Mercato. They made over 100 millions by selling (majority was from 75 +10 for Hojlund), and then bought 3, or 4 new players for around 80 to 85 millions. As you've said it, his ability to improve the players, to raise their level of game and take out 110% of their talent & potential, is simply stunning (that's why I was saying that Hojlund needed at least 1 more season in La Dea shirt, possibly 2, to turn into a world. class striker, before going to Man-U, a club that puts its players down, ON A REGULAR BASIS - 90+% of their players start playing bad and getting worse when they get in that team). Last Mercato, when he decided to get Dr Katelare, I "knew" that he would. turn him. back to his best, but when he decided to buy Scamacca, I was so skeptical, thinking: "Why would Atalanta splash 35 million like that on a player who was quite unsatisfactory in West Ham - although I knew he played the 1at half of the season with constant injury, and then went on under a knife... - and during New Year, he was the same in Atalanta as he was in West Ham. But ever since January, and especially last 2+ months, he turned into a beast who can't stop scoring! And that's one more proof that Gasperini is maestro of a coach. So, I'd love to watch him keep on doing this (although I'm. aware that if he was doing that in Napoli, Milan, Juve... and those type of. clubs in England, Germany... he would've get many rewards.) He doesn't get constant chances to fight for trophies (that's why I'd love to see him this Wednesday lifting the Coppa Italia trophy, and as he said, the most important - EL vs Leverkuzen), maybe he'll never win a Scudetto, but surely, one day his statue will be present at Gewiss, Atalanta's new, renivated beautifully stadium! FORZA LA DEA!
Every year he values previously unknown players, that get then sold for crazy prices (hoilund is the last example) and he starts over and over again with very different ideas and teams. So it’s a mixture of great scouting, tactical ideas, financial control and wise investments.
Leverkusen fans here, come to check out the opponent :) Gasperini once took charge internazionale, no? but i guess he is that kind of manager needs quite a lot permission to shape and design the team.
Xabi Alonso perfected Anti-Zone Marking Tactics. Bundeliga is so dominated with zone marking and Bayern Munich is one of the best at it, many usually never practice man marking. But clubs like Leverkusen and Stuttgart recently figured out how to counter zone marking (attack on one side, then stay on that side, go 1:1 or play a risky pass, do not just circle arround the box) and quickly dominated eveything. Slow side changes against zone marking are often just a reset of a defence and a waste of time. But Bergamo with that consequent man marking destroyed that tactic. They were so close to the opponent players, that they won every important 1:1. Bergamos goals were just the skill of lookman and personal mistakes by Leverkusen. But the tactical impressive thing was the 0 goal danger Leverkusen could create. Luckily for them, man marking is so difficult, a zone marking team cannot just switch to it. But Alonso seriously need to develope a counter man marking strategy or this will happen again.
Is definitely the best analysis I have seen/read on the Gasperini system, congrats and thanks, Cormac. Do you think he can replicate his system even in a more emblazoned team? How could Napoli, Juventus or Milan be?
Atalanta has been selling its best players nearly every summer. But GSP is still able to provide the same football philosophy. That fact itself is worth looking into.

You’re funny . It’s Atalanta, Leverkusen and hat-trick
Football was owing him a title, it would be a shame if he never won anything despite being that good
@@YevOnegintotally right
Won the treble. Praised Gasperini the most throughout every press conference. Suggested him as a replacement, instead of Benitez. That is what Mourinho did
Here after the insane tactical domination against Neverlusen (well, not anymore)
Atalanta's games are fun to watch. In Europe the team plays much better than in Italy. Italian referees tend to whistle to much, the other Italian teams know that and try to slow down their rhythm. Atalanta loves playing at high intensity - no dive, no time waste - only great football.
Their football is tailor made for Europe on their day they can beat anyone
Gasperini system is indeed powerful, but the most unenjoyable way to play team sport like football, known as total football system. It is old, discarded long ago when no fan is willing no more to pay money to see the game. Every fan shall know better before euphorizing Gasprini.
@@budposeidon31 I disagree with your opinion: Atalanta is absolutely a joy to watch. If football is a team sport, Atalanta does play it as team.
On the other hand, Gasperini surprisingly fielded an even more attacking team and crushed Bayer
i don't think anyone expected such domination tonight, Atalanta looked like beasts as soon as they walked out
italians did expect it. matter of fact, i was confident atalanta was gonna get it done
Atalanta and Leverkusen will do a great europe league final!
It was great indeed!
It was a demolition derby...😬
Season 2019/20:
Atalanta - Udinese 7:1
Atalanta - Milan 5:0
Atalanta - Parma 5:0
Torino - Atalanta 0:7
Lecce - Atalanta 2:7
Atalanta - Brescia 6:2
It was an excellent season, a lot of goals and a match with PSG to go to the semifinal of Champion League. Atalanta is now oficcialy one of the best european teams.
foi anyone who follow Atalanta for years, this squad is the best. But is goo to see the Gasperin's job being crowned with this trophy.
That season was so goddamn good, if only freuler didn't gassed out the last 10 minutes against PSG...

It's really crazy how most big European clubs don't rate this man.
He didn't do well when he got the inter Job
Not sure if his tactical approach suits a top team
I think Gasperini is one of those coaches who does better at a smaller club. Similar to Sarri, he is so demanding in the way he wants things done, I don't know if his personality would mesh well with a team full of bigger stars.
His approach may work in Serie A and La Liga but it will not work in fast based leagues like EPL.
Language barrier is a huge thing aswell, not all Italian coaches are fluent using English
Absolutely deserved to whoop Leverkusen. What a team, what a manager.
Love the fact Europan football is starting to talk about Gasperini, he's great manager
The praise showered by Mourinho no less on Gasperini says it all. "He is one of the strongest coaches I have faced. Constantly adapting plans within the match". This was a decade and half back

Gasperini ball is just pure football, every game is fun to watch. Atalanta could do even better if their best players didn’t leave every year.
its not true that the best player leave each year
@@yelgawh543 best/key players at key positions, they’re a club where good players leave after a year or two. if some players stayed longer I know they could have an insane starting 11 where they really can fight for the title
@@jeethoven We always sold key players in the past years at really good prices to reinvest money in new players with lots of potential. The great thing is, we’ve always been able to allow new players to reach their full potential and keep this strategy rolling, to grow each year and be able to be in a good financial position and increase the solidity of the team YoY. I believe we now are in a position where we have a really strong team, we don’t have to sell but if we sell we can now afford great players. And that was made to build a long-term successful team
@@xeloreddetv I like this current team and players, im just afraid if this summer they sell some players like scalvini or carnesecchi they’ll be stuck in this cycle. Like if they can keep hold of those players, and buy 2-3 extra key players, they can definitely fight for the title next year.
Hojlund, Caldara, Gagliardini, Kessie, Kulusevski, Gosens, Diallo, Boga, Demiral, Barrow, Ibanez...
All good players but none were so fundamental, so much so that Atalanta has always managed to replace them. And none of them are top team players (I mean the top 4-5 teams in Europe)
The only real champions sold were Romero e Bastoni, they are players who actually make the difference.
And Atalanta can now afford 40-50 million players, last year he took Scamacca and Bilal, costly moves for a ex provincial team
I'm Atalanta fan. Gasperini is the most demanding coach in the league. This playing is a result of very heavy training and is not for all. There's not compromise, really hardwork ethic in and out of field or you are out. That is. Can big teams players sustain this man and his methods? That's the question. Ps the man is not so easy to live with. Ask Castagne,Mahele,Demiral,Papu Gomez,Barrow,Skertl,Orsolini,Kulusewsky, and Bakker now...

Very interesting video
Alonso took a lot from him.
Bayer press man to man in the final half and zonal in their half.
Bayer use the wing to wing movement that Gasperini trademarked.
Bayer also uses the positional interchange in attacking phase, though Grimaldo is more of a crosser, whilst Gosens (for example) was more of an incursore. Also a difference in playmaking. Alonso uses Xhaka, who builds from deep, and Gasperini relies on AMF playmakers (Ilicic, Gomez, Malinovski, Miranchuk or Koopmeiners)

his situation is a bit like that of De Zerbi at Brighton - he's capable of beating almost anyone but is also capable of losing to almost anyone on a bad day - which is why really big teams can't take the chance. If you lose 3 in a row at Brighton, it's not that big a deal. If you do that at Man U, you are heading for the exit pretty soon. I could see Gasperini at somewhere like West Ham, but I understand if he wants to stay where he is

Gasperini is much better than De Zerbi and going from Atalanta to West Ham is a massive downgrade.

Atalanta play my favourite style of football in Europe. Very happy that they beat Leverkusen and Gasperini has won a trophy.
They have always been a really hard to play against and finally have their trophy. Well deserved for La Dea.

Atalanta made Leverkusen like a big joke.
This is the best video team analysis I have seen of Atalanta in a long time.
This Atalanta is a very solid team. But 19/20 Atalanta is the best Gasperini's spell ever. They almost had PSG , if only Josip was there.

Excellent video. Thumb up mate 👍
Underrated manager.
They have a high physical team...Good on the ball...Good pressing...They will beat Leverkusen in the final...LFC was unable to cope with them...

@BIazy He won a Scudetto being an outsider, he got Milan to the UCL semifinals with no tactics? Ooook...
We need videos about Vicenzo Italiano, Thiago Motta, Simone Inzaghi, Alberto Gilardino, Igor Tudor, Raffaele Palladino & Ivan Jurić.

Dici poco! Il risultato e' che stai parlando di lui.
feels like nfl style route running from forwards could exploit the man to man system
Šteno, legendo!
Every year he values previously unknown players, that get then sold for crazy prices (hoilund is the last example) and he starts over and over again with very different ideas and teams. So it’s a mixture of great scouting, tactical ideas, financial control and wise investments.
A mix of Gasperini’s and Xabi’s styles would be brilliants
Leverkusen fans here, come to check out the opponent :)
Gasperini once took charge internazionale, no? but i guess he is that kind of manager needs quite a lot permission to shape and design the team.

Couldn’t believe why they couldn’t win the league then
Gasperini represents "genius in football" !!
He shouldnt manage a bigger club, just let him build a legacy at Atalanta. Its beautiful to watch.
