Brutal! If you ever need temporary storage like this again, I recommend the large heavy duty metal rolling racks from Sam's Club.
They're typically around $100 and are commercial grade, rated for up to 1000 pounds per shelf (versus the 200-250lbs for the Lowe's plastic units), with 6 shelves total. I've used them for very heavy gear and never had issues.

Cute. That’s great if you only drink the same bottles all the time or you are an alcoholic.
Completely irrelevant for an enthusiast or taster of many whiskies. The goal is not to kill every bottle you buy, but to enjoy many experiences from variety.
That means you’re not draining every bottle destroying your liver. and you tend to accumulate bottles like a library for future comparisons and experiences.
Very unfortunate what happened, and I’d be crushed if it happened to me, but it’s actually better the lost quantity didn’t have to pass through his liver or that it was his bourbon collection he was moving around.

Ive had it happen, luckily not as many bottles broke as he lost, but yes, the smell is absolutely amazing haha. When my shelf failed, it fell on me and one of my dogs on the couch under it. Lost an eagle rare pick i had 1 pour of, woodford double oak i had 1 pour of, knob creek 15 3/4 full, couple old elk picks corks fell off and lost some but did break, and another bottle or 2. For over a week, every time walked in the house got hit in the face w a great whiskey smell. Walking in the room was even better. Luckily my dog didnt get hurt. Scared the crap out of her, she was shaking uncontrollably, but i got her out the room wo a scratch. I had a nasty gash on my had, glass in my hair, blood every where because i was moving ans securing bottles finding all the ones that didnt break/looking for the most expensive ones before i took care of the gash, so blood all over the bottles. Oh man, quite the experience. I hope i never forget that smell, but never experience it again. Not like that anyways haha

I have my collection in heavy-duty tubs with lids. Tall enough to fit the tallest of bottles. Learned quickly that stacking them 4 or 5 high was too much for the lids on the bottom. Had plywood sheets cut into rectangles that fit the tops - this distributes the weight better and lets you safely stack things without issues. Keeps the bottles out of the sunlight, you can label the tubs with what's in there and I even worked out getting different colored lids to let me know unopened versus opened contents. So far, this system is working great for me and I can get more tubs or swap them around for other types of bottles as the collection ebbs and flows.

My collection has become a bit of a sprawl, and my wife wanted to buy me a rack to shelve it all for Christmas. That crashing image has come to mind when thinking about some of those units and is part of the reason that i declined the offer. The other reason is that i dont want to have an excuse to keep buying more. I'm out of space. That's it. Drink up what i have. The only actual tragedy i can think of is losing my grip on a bottle as i was taking it out of the cabinet, and it dropped and cracked a ceramic kitchen floor tile. The cracked tile is still in place. I don't have any backup tiles of the same color. My bottles are currently kept in two kitchen cabinets, all across an overflow dresser (the long kind, not the tall kind) in the basement, and in an office file cabinet. Yeah, great display.

I know this feeling all too well. Luckily, for me, my catastrophe was not as bad. I had a shelf that had about 40 bottles on top, the front flipped down to store inside. I had some nice glasswear and a few more bottles inside. I hadnt touched the shelf for a few days, one night, about 2am, one of my dogs and i were on the couch, all the sudden...the shelf came down. Bottles smashing our heads, arms, feet, bodies, etc. I got a nice gash on my hand. The shelf was on me, in front of my dog, bottles and glass all over the floor in front the couch. My poor dog (rip QT PI) was terrified. Shaking uncontrollably but not moving otherwise. I was finally able to clear way to get to her and get her to jump off the side of the couch instead off the front where all the glass was, and safely out the room. Had my RIP 12yr Lot B on the shelf, weller full proof pick, as well as some other really nice bottles. I lost an eagle rare pick that i had like 1 pour of, woodford double oaked that i only had 1 pour of, knob creek 15 batch 2 that was 3/4 full, a couple old elks that were on their side w the cork out for like 2 days because i couldnt find them right after it happen and didnt go back in the room for a couple days. But man, soon as you opened the front door to come in the house, it had such an amazing smell. Walking into the room, it was even better. Now, i build my own shelves, and lag them into studs, then i have 1/2 pipe flanges screwed to studs, 1/2 6" nipple, 90 with a 2" nipple and another flange screwed to the bottom of the flange. May be thinking only 1/2"!?! Yea, but the shelf is legit bolted to the wall. Like a 2x12 with a hole drilled front to back with threaded rod going through the shelf threaded into a sammy lagged into a stud, then a washer and nut on outside of the shelf clamping it to the wall. That alone is enough to hold the weight, but then the pipe and fittings for secondary support.

This video was well done and couldn’t be more timely. We are starting the Mcburbn shelving for the McGolf Shop and Mrs McGolf purchased some wooden shelves from Amazon, with only 5 bottles on a 4 ft shelf the wall anchor gave way and a “bourbon barrel” crashed to the floor spouing for the cork and the liquid found it way to the floor. The rest survived thankfully. And i just finished the last of the tale of two island batch 001 bottle. Now onto the over engineered shelf.

I once had the plastic pins supporting a kitchen cabinet shelf break. No bottles were lost since there were tall bottles on the shelf below that supported the shelf that fell. I've since replaced all the pins with metal ones. I store over 300 tightly packed bottles on a 48"x72"x18" wire shelving rack from Costco. The weight capacity on it is something like 6,000 pounds without the casters, and I figure 300 bottles only weighs about 900 pounds.

I was holding a clamshell style box and transferred it from one hand to the other and out fell an unopened bottle of Louis XIII Cognac. I never trust boxes like that only boxes i trust are boxes like bookers, blood oath, that are solid and open from the front, or jack boxes that the top flips open like a basic box. Thoae boxes where the entire top half comes off, always thought those were terrible designs for that exact reason. Blows my mind that a company selling such an expensive bottle would put it in such a horribly designed box like that.

I now plenty of people, and STORES use those metal shelves with round uprights and the shelves are held in place with two little plastic cups that snap to a grove and then hold in place with pressure... yeah those seem like a disaster and they are miles better than plastic. I started out with some of those cheap metal shelves and then quickly upgraded to very heavy duty warehouse shelving (since it's in my basement anyway). The shelves I use are rated for like 800 lbs each. They SHOULD hold about 260 full bottles per shelf (3lbs per bottle) but I limit each shelf to around 40-50 bottles. I've had to purchase 3 sets of these racks to hold my bottles but that's fine. The most expensive and rare are stored in my office so even if a rack failed (not likely) I'd be annoyed but not devestated.

Worst I've had happen yet was hitting a massive bump driving back from south Carolina... Carting back 40+ bottles in the van after hunting in SC, TN, GA and NC.... All of them shot up in the air.... And all but one came down safely. The one that broke was a heavens door single barrel (so delicious).. The van smelled amazing all the way back to Virginia but I could no longer speed as I didn't think a cop would believe me lol

    • @jacksmith2315
      @jacksmith2315 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

And its illegal to cross state lines with that many bottles. Even if he did believe it was a broken bottle, he could still confiscate the bottles. I had a cop pull me over with only 6 bottles crossing state line. Luckily he was cool and didnt bust my balls like he could have.

One word….”Boxes” work great for temporary storage. Actually, I use wine boxes that typically hold six bottles of wine. I pull the center sleeve out and it makes a perfect storage box for 4 bottles of whiskey no matter the bottle shape. Sorry you lost so much… might invest in some straws in case it happens again 😃

Oh my gosh, I should have warned you. My pal who is quite wealthy lost all of his btac, several Pappy 20 & 23 (he is a CEO who gets gifted such prizes), even a Parker's 27 was lost in a plastic shelf collapse. It was there only as a temporary measure, and would have eventually sat on solid shelving in a wine cellar. Liquid is heavy!

    • @jacksmith2315

Not so much the liquid as the glas bottles them selves. Sure the liquid adds up, but the glass is heavier. Ppl dont realize how heavy these collections can be. With that kinda money/expensive hard to find bottles, its amazing ppl would trust anything plastic, even temporarily
