@@emerybryant Totally depends on the model. The M54 engine is a good example. My 2005 525i is at 240,000 miles and runs very good still. The only big issues have come from the sport package hydraulics. Now, the N54 motors which came after 05' in the E60s and E90s are usually money pits. The N20 turbo 4 cylinders require timing chains every 70k, which is ridiculous. The new B series motors, Inline 6 and I4, are great though.

Personally I have to have at least a v6 to maintain highway speed in a hilly area like mine. Great for maneuvering in traffic in general. The shitty thing about driving a four cylinder is that your car then doesn’t react as quick as you do and you might need to change a lane to get in front of a slow vehicle then you come to a hill and it’s like whelp screw that plan guess I’ll have to wait. In a v6 there is no waiting if yoh want to go 90 uphill your just seconds away but a 4 you just have to wait for the car to have anything left to give and that’s a no go for me Scotty. I wouldn’t drive through utah (where the speed limit is 85) without one. I feel like 4 cylinders sit at high rpms as well once you’re in od just to keep speed but In a 6 you get the spikes getting up to speed and then it rests at a nice 1500-2000 down the road. I do have one of those 9 speeds thoug. Shifts into 3rd like a pig but gas Milanese basically doubles on the highway

I6 engines weren't only made by bmw, and they are arguably the best design, because v12s are just 2 naxt to eachother. They also are artificialy balanced, making the crankshaft lighter. They also make good torque to power ratios. Just a great design

2 old 4 bangers in my driveway, a Nissan Z24i, and a Honda D16Y5. Also, a couple VW air cooled boxers awaiting resurrection.
Also, a GM 3.0 boat engine with an h2o milkshake in the pan , awaiting diagnosis .

I stick with my BMW, I have been fixing them since 1992 and as long as they are maintained they last forever. Also parts aren’t that expensive especially when you are me, Honda is more expensive to me to fix than BMWS. I get OEM PARTS for usually 50-70% off list prices and I pass the savings to my customers. I definitely make money off the parts but they are still paying less than they would anywhere else. Years ago I was doing timing belts on the BMWS that had them at the time and it was $300 for parts and labor and it included water pump, thermostat and tensioner and the engine drive belts and coolant for $300 I did a civic just to see the price difference and I got the parts from advanced and NAPA. The parts alone cost me almost $300. I doubt they were OEM. The BMW parts were all from OEM suppliers and identical to the factory ones they sell at the dealer.

Heyyy. This may be my opportunity to get an answer ro something I've been wondering about.
What is the "thing" in a car's engine that makes one car driving at 60 mph go faster than another car driving at 60 mph.
I just wonder that's all. Two vehichles driving on the road, both at 60 mph, but one will be faster/ be ahead of the other. One might also reach 60 mph faster than the other. What is the thing that makes that happen (sorry for the lack of technical language).
    THANK YOU!😁

The first car I ever drove was my dad's '02 Corolla with a 1.8L 4cyl. Then I bought my own vehicle, an '04 Tacoma with the 2.4L 4cyl. Those 4 bangers never quit on me, so why should I quit on them 😁

  • @NIK12787

Currently have a gen 10, 2008 Toyota Corolla CE with over 214K miles. Has a 1.8L 4 cylinder and yeah it runs great. My previous car which was a gen 5, 2005 Nissan Sentra which had over 182K miles with also a 1.8L 4 cylinder still ran perfectly when I got rid of it.
Those 4 cylinder engines can take a hell of a beating for clocking over 150K miles and still runs like new as long you keep them well maintenanced with oil changes and other fluids, and replace parts from time to time and indeed the best part with 4 cylinders is they are very easy to work on.
Past 2 cars before the Sentra had V6 engines and the 1993 Dodge Intrepid still ran great when I got rid of it at 160K miles. The 2000 Chrysler Sebring convertible, not so much. What was Chrysler thinking cramming a V6 into a engine compartment meant for a 4 cylinder? Literally made working on the engine a huge pain making it nearly impossible to work on and the worst part was the battery was stuffed into the wheel well instead of the engine compartment. That Sebring was literally on it's last legs when I got rid of it at about 135K miles where I ended up scrapping it since the engine was about to die at any moment. The other past cars I ended up selling since they still ran excellent.

I drive German and European v8s and v12s nothing like the smooth refined feeling of a e65 7 series or any model sclass with a v8 driven some jags and things but there v8s don’t compare. I enjoy Hondas fine but nothing like the feeling of a real thoroughbred German mustang screaming at 6500 rpm carrying you past that mustang or Camaro but with a touch of purpose sophistication and class.

The saleswoman tried to sell me on an in stock automatic. We all waited 1 month for delivery of a great manual car. 50 mpg commute(imperial 4.54L gallon). ✌️❤️🇨🇦

Cheap like you. Though a caveat is in place. My car is a Pearl white Subaru Impreza wagon sport premium. 2.0i NA of course and run’s remarks around even the new Honda civic. My downfall is the transmission. A five speed manual with a variable timing system redo and the variable speed is low getting started but can be fixed with a new transmission…. I hope 🤞?
What is going on with the transmission if when you start it cold (Texas morning cold 🥶) and it makes a ticking sound when I press or put pressure on the clutch? No tail made signs on the dashboard and all is tuned for the mods. What is the code for or how do I fix it?

Scotty, I bought a 2004 Buick LaSabre with the 3.8L engine. You said this was a good engine with cheap, available parts and was reliable. The car was driven a couple of hours, then parked. Tried to restart, and would not start. Changed the 3coil packs. It will start, run about three minutes, then start missing, then shut off. The gas pressure, when it does run, is very high, 45-50 psi. Any ideas on what the problem could be? I do not own a scanner and I can’t drive the car to somewhere that has one. I need advice.

Most of my driving is local, 25-40 mph. So the 2.5L 4 cyl engine is all I need. But on the few occasions I do get on the freeway, making my engine work hard to get up to speed is a somewhat troubling. I need about a 1 mile long onramp to comfortably get up to speed.

If we had turbo diesels like oveseas, 40 mpg in a full size car. Or a jeep that gets 30 mpg..
Or emissions that are more like federal sabotage. 10,000 replacement parts at a time . Dealer only. Spendy.
