Crazy to see how many of you shared your opinions on the topic of what you want from a sim title. I’ve read all of them & it was very interesting, thank you legends🤝
My take on sim racing is that since I am not able to experience real life racing cars (of this caliber) or tracks, I'd like to experience something that is as close to the real thing as it can be. That is also why I very much appreciate this kind of feedback from real world race drivers. So cheers James!
This is my sentiments as well. I'm closing in on 40. The chances of me getting scouted from sim racing, or suddenly coming into money to get into racing the traditional way is basically zero. So i want to be able to experience as close to as real as possible with any sim racing i play. My only exception to that is forza horizon. That's just for funzies.
I've been sim racing for over 30 years (started with Indy 500 by Papyrus) and have learned that the 'racing experience' is more important to me than whether a sim is considered the most realistic. For example, iRacing may be considered more realistic but I find the overall experience in AMS2 and Raceroom way more immersive and fun. It's the reason I keep going back to those games vs others like ACC, rFactor2 or iRacing.
Agreed. In AMS2 the other day, I did a 100% F1 race in VR; I lost it and crashed outside turn 3, and stayed sat in the car for a bit. I "felt" the track go yellow, hearing my competitors wind down to pacing speed in the distance, a flashing yellow LED flag here and there. Then I hear the rumble of an AMG, I look over and the safety car is hauling ass out of pit road ready to pick up the pack. What good are the best physics in the world when there's no experience around them? That moment kicked ass!
Aging sim racer here as well, RR seems very immersive and somehow accessible, just like its underpinnings (Race07). The main issue with AMS 2 is that are not equal within the same class, some are fine, some seem forgotten (like the GT3 gen1s who seem still on the old 1.5 physics). But if they eventually get half the car classes to feel like AMS1, it would be awesome.
I agree with your opinion about aiming to drive the most immersive sim. IRacing is one of the least immersive sims for me personally. But every time I jump in a car in rF2, I smile a complete lap because it's one of the most immersive titles I know. Why do you think, that rF2 isn't as immersive as ams2? I'm really interested in your opinion.
Yeah that makes total sense, for a lot of people it seems to be about the ‘whole package’. Congrats on sim racing for so long, hopefully one day I can say I’ve been doing it for that long😂
Great vid! 6:50 - regarding coasting being to slow - just checked by loading your setup from the time trials and your engine breaking was set to *max* (0 is max, its inverse) so no wonder you felt slow when off throttle lol.
The point is, you would not set the car up in this way IRL and therefore, this should mean the car if realistic wouldn't be fast, but it is the fastest way to drive it.
@@GuagoFruit In rf2 a detatched rear ARB is the default value for a lot of the GT3s. Just because you are running a stiff roll bar at the front and soft at the rear shouldn't make it feel weird.
@@d43tomo18 Absolutely not! EB is totally based on driver prefrence. The values are inverse because you are setting up the reduction of the engine braking. 0 in EB mean 0 reduction in EB. So A) it is not the fastest way to drive it. It depends on the car and personal prefrence and you can be quick witth any kind of EB value. And B) it is not unrealistic. A driver who wants the full EB would just go to 0 EB reduction. Nothing wrongt with that
As someone who has zero chance to race in the real world, I'm all for fun, as long as the car drives somewhat close to a racing car it's good enough for me.
For me, AMS2 is the most immersive and fun to sim/game to race right now. I feel the lack of realism which I love but still, is the game the I have been playing/having fun the most lately. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the review, James. Realism for me also. I attended my first F1 GP with my dad in 1968 (the last race that the great Jim Clark won) and, since then, I have been obsessed with racing in the 60s and 70s. Sim racing was a gift from the gods as I could visualize racing against my idols from that period. As a 65 year-old sim racer that cut my teeth on Grand Prix Legends in 1998, I have always longed for a realistic game, even if that means that I come last in every race!
To watch you driving AMS2 on the limit is a sensation on its own. Spot on analysis about AMS2 pros and cons anyway, as always. And I like in particular your undoubtedly honest objective insights and judgements whatever you do! A rare attitude these days.
Realism is important to an extent, but if the sim is not fun to drive, I'm no longer interested, and if the graphics are so poor that I lose immersion, then also that's a big negative. I'm sure AMS2 is not the most realistic of the current crop of sims, but for me it hits a sweet spot of being realistic enough so that all the inputs I use in other sims work much the same in AMS2, while being super immersive and a ton of fun to drive.
absolute realism! the more the handling replicates the real deal, the more interesting. I did not know you helped on LMU, now I will try the evo with a new perspective
I've tried reducing the engine braking effect and it does affect how the car behaves, thanks for the tip and if that makes it more true to life then that's good and nice to know. Seems a bit daft though complaining that the main fault is engine braking when you turned it up full :) Anyway enjoyable video, thanks for posting.
I've stopped caring about realism. It's nice to have something believable, and obviously it's the point of sim racing, but each sim handles differently and different people swear by each one, so to me it's pointless splitting hairs over cars I'll never drive in anger. I prefer just to have fun with each title for what it does positively.
@@calinpetrescu9128 'real life pro drivers' *don't* agree, many of them are handling consultants across multiple sims, many of them are sponsored by different sims and many of them are making content playing many sims and claiming strengths or weaknesses of each one. There is no unanimous or even majority agreement on 'pro drivers' which sim is best sim.
@Lasukie no one asked which sim is "best". Best so vague, subjective and situational... we're talking driving physics, sir. I already said 100% perfect driving feel doesn't make a great sim on it's own. So, when it comes to driving physics many pro drivers agree on which sims feel and drive more real. iracing or ams2 ain't one of them.
@@calinpetrescu9128 Sir, I literally said pro drivers are consultants across MULTIPLE sims - they consult in physics. Hell, this pro-driver ADMITS his consultation to another title in this video. So either you're stating that pro-drivers who consult on other sims and stand by their work are somehow 'wrong' compared to drivers who stan one sim. Or you're starting that pro-drivers who literally develop driving physics are sponsored shills who are lying about their ability to develop physics. Either way, not a cool look.
I prefer realism, but I also know we'll never get a truly "real" sim experience. If I could take the suspension from AMS2, tire model from LMU, weight transfer and sounds from ACC, and the matchmaking of iRacing, that would be perfect for me.
@@dkadayinthailand3082 it cost 300,000 dollars a year to participate in GT3, around 1 million a year to make it to NASCAR CUP, and around 5 million a year to even participate in F!(and you need to be a karting prodigy). Thats why sims exist, because real racing is a hobby for billionaires sons.
You can adjust engine braking amount (to help keep coasting speed) in the setup and you can adjust the wheel from shaking on straights through settings in your wheel software.
Can you enlighten me on how to accomplish no wheel shake on a straight on a Simucube 2 Pro? I'm running Race Beyond profile and default+ all effects off. I've tried many things talked about in this comment section and nothing stops the wheel from going nuts when you let go.
@ Sorry I don't have any experience with Simucube stuff. In fanatec driver software there is a setting called Natural Damper and another one called FFB Interpolation Filter that I played with until the wheel shaking was 90% gone.
@ Thanks for the reply! I will play around with the setting on the wheelbase. At the end of the day, it's definitely not a deal breaker. AMS2 is great fun!
Awesome video, thank you. Great perspective. I am of course an amateur at best, but tonight I found softening the suspension really made the Lambo and even the Vette feel much better, seems much more planted to the ground which sounded like some of your issues as well. Regardless, thank you for this video, fun to see a real driver giving this type of honest feedback. To answer your initial question, I'm more of a SIMCADE fan, def has to be more on the SIM side, but I like the fun aspect of AMS2.
Yea this is a big one that is often over looked, i always go in and change it right down no matter what car. If needed I then start turning it back up. Should default to lowest in my opinion.
I'm no racecar driver but i think your 100% correct because i drive all the sims and i just feel that slidy feeling in AMS2 but it's better than it was and it's fun.
I’m all about immersion. That’s why VR is so important for me. As long as it’s not arcade like Need for speed, I can have fun with a game. I have put probably 300 hour into Gran Turismo 7. But am also enjoying AC, LMU, iRacing and so on. At one point even was at 3500 irating.
For me there definitely has to be a certain degree of realism for me to have fun. I mainly do iRacing, purely for the easily accessible competetive aspect and gigantic player base. I've tried all sims and all have their merits. As long as I can carry my baseline driving skills between sims I consider them to be good.
Regarding the vertical movement, it's a good point that James raises. If you watch real GT3s, when they hit the brakes for the Bus Stop chicane, you see the front of the car dive but then oscillate up and down as it bounces off the bump stops like a pogo stick. Just watch slow motion footage from GT World channel if you don't believe me. The real cars react violently to bumps compared to every sim where the suspension seems to just absorb everything perfectly. It's an area that all the sim developers should investigate why this doesn't line up to reality.
Amazing James I totally think that it should sound like the real thing in all sims to get the true feeling of being a racing driver. and that should include the true tire model and force feedback the best experience possible that I have just started in ACC it feels planted on track and the corners. I guess the sims are getting better and improving with each update
There was a time I would say realism to answer your question. Then iRacing dropped the corvette GT3, and I hated the sound from inside the cockpit. I went and watched some onboard clips, and they got it pretty dang close. It sounds not so good in real life from inside the car as well. Kind of like some angry bees. 😆
Yeah, that'll be really interesting. R3E is my main sim, but I had little issues switching to ACC on occasion whereas I haven't been able to really figure out iRacing for the past decade or so. James' and other comments helped me figure out why that might be.
@@andid-42 that's interesting, as someone who mains r3e too, acc feels quite horrible to get into coming from r3e, where iracing in the other hand feels more natural for me :D
For me I think I want something that is mostly realistic, but not at the expense of it being fun. AMS2 is my primary racing sim right now because IMO it's the best game, not most realistic sim. I love that i can fire up a server and jump on with a couple buddies and some ai cars and be racing in a matter of seconds. Not one of these other sims are capable of that. I also enjoy the variety of it. The fact that people are even comparing the GT3 cars in AMS2 to other sims like LMU and ACC really says something about AMS2. Those games only simulate 1 to 3 classes of cars. AMS2 has GT3, semi truck racing, go karts, 90s DTM, Formula 1, Indy, you name it. The fact that their GT3 cars even made it into the same ballpark as those other sims is impressive.
Another great video James. For me the feel of the car is more important than looks. AMS2 always felt a bit woolly but now after the update is better. I don’t feel connected with IRacing. LMU and RF2 are the benchmarks I reckon.
The custom ffb profile from GamerMuscle video completely made the game way more connected and realistic. I wouldn’t really play the game before and now with the custom ffb it feels way more authentic.
For me, the question is: Are the skills and techniques required to drive this sim the same as the ones I need to drive a real car or race in another sim? If the question is yes, it's realistic enough for me.
@james, for me the immersion is important because that is what I am going to experience for the next hour or so of the race. An example for me of a sim getting this spot on is the Porsche 911 992 Cup in RF2. If you look at Rudy van Buren's side by side comparison video of a real life 992 cup vs the one in RF2 and it is 99% correct onboard sound. That is why I can t drive the Porsche 911 992 GTR R in ACC as the sound is very weak and not real.
I typed up a comment but mustn't have actually posted it! I can see others have mentioned the engine braking. I was going to make a comment about the FFB - you said you're using a custom setup, if it's from pre 1.6 then it might be worth replacing it as they made significant changes to FFB and the recommendation was to go back to Default+ and work from there. Also, the 'Default' setting itself is designed to give even less information, so that might be more up your alley (although i haven't personally used it much at all and not for a long time). I use Default+, I've never found a custom one that I liked the feel of. In terms of how the cars drive, it's interesting what you say about steering with the throttle. Lately I've been driving the McLaren MP4/6 and at Imola 1988, specifically at "Acque Minerali" I'm really noticing how much I need to balance giving enough throttle to rotate the rear and get my nose pointing where I want it. Without hearing your comments, which to me are actually the most well-articulated and actually explain what feels unrealistic, to me that could have just been normal behaviour as I have never driven a high-powered RWD car on track IRL. Most other commentators just say "AMS2 feels floaty" which to me it doesn't (AC does though and is the only reason I finally was able to work out what people were talking about). So I appreciate hearing from someone who knows what they're talking about and is able to actually articulate it without prejudice. So, I own AC, RF2, ACC, and AMS2. Out of all of them, AMS2 and RF2 are easily my favourites, but for different reasons. AC is fast to get up and running but needs Content Manager to be useable, has poor AI, AI doesn't have tyre wear, the sound is terrible, and user-created mods vary in quality. ACC is on GT driving - doesn't really suit me as I typically prefer driving vehicles that require the use of heel-toe and have minimal electronic assists. RF2 feels the best to drive, but everything about setting up and driving is a hassle. In fact, if they actually had a decent single-player experience with custom championships, and a better selection of default circuits and cars, I probably would never have even tried out AMS2. AMS2 for me is the complete package - it's easy to set up and race, it sounds great, cars feel good to me, the FFB is fine, there's a good variety of circuits (I own all the DLC), and there are aspects of the physics that are much closer to what I like in RF2 that I don't get in AC. The single-player experience is also very good, and has only improved over time. That said, what am I looking for? Absolutely I want realism - I personally hate the idea that I might be "cheating" compared to real life. But it also has to be a reasonably streamlined experience, not send me jumping through hoops for content, have a good single-player experience, isn't published by EA. Good sound is important, mostly in regards to making the engine pitch shifting not awful (this is where AC really struggles, but it's quite old now). And AMS2 also ticks the box of highly-optimised graphics. I'm running maxed out and never get under 120fps. Out of all the available top choices (excluding iRacing which I have no interest in trying due to the pricing model), AMS2 is the closest to fully ticking every box.
Ill never own or sit in a racecar, so for me it actually means something when real racers says its realistic. However if the fun bit isnt there, im out - so a bit of both 😇 Thank you James, you are a legend!
I only have the base cars, so gen 1 Gt3s and so it may be better in the gen 2s ofc, but it still feels to me as you've described it, they also feel tricky during braking at times, car wants to spin if you're not careful when trail braking, I usually reduce the rear dampers or mess with the ARBs to make it more planted than the stock setup or the TT meta setup, which are prob the fastest but hardest to drive. I'm not an alien and I use a G29, which might be a limiting factor, but I use a few different custom FFBs, the rack_force one, the JP one, which is really good, but has a bit too much information imo, which feel a bit better than the stock ffb, which isn't bad, but could be better. The Formula 1 cars, the 2019 and 2022-2024 ones, feel wild to drive, fun I guess, but they're still not planted at all and they obviously have redonk levels of downforce, they should really only be sliding much in the rain, they just don't feel planted enough.
I have a simucube osw wheel base and found that I need 50% damping, 10% friction, 20% inertia and 10% low force boost in the simucube wheel software. I find this feels pretty good and reduces over activity in the steering when used in conjunction with the in game custom ffb setting. I have the wheel set at max 15nm and adjust in game ffb slider as desired.
For me, accuracy and realism is important for immersion. Like most, I’m a wannabe racing driver and I want to believe I’m driving the real thing for an hour or two. I don’t do the more ‘arcade style’ sims
Now we need this series to also cover raceroom and acc :D. As far as things like physics, sounds and tracks go im definitely all for realism, for me thats whats fun about sim racing in the first place. I dont really care for video games otherwise. However i cant really know whats realistic unless things are blatantly off so theres that :D. With ffb there is no "realistic" imo, its there to make up for the lack of sensations youd get while actually sat in the car so as long as thats achieved i dont care how its done
I'm driving for both, I want to have the most realism - that' why I came to Sim Racing in the first place - but I also want it to be enjoyable. If I could have the most real life thing that's possible and I can't make it around the track, what's the point? For sure I could pump in hours to get better and be good, but the harsh reality is that most people have lifes outside of Sim Racing. So for me it's beeing so much immersed that I think it's the real thing, even if it's not exactly the real thing (but very close tho you know, like in touching distance) And just some mind game here: Imagine the exact FFB on the wheel as you have it on the wheel in real life, the physics are perfect, it's like in real life. The issue here is your only feedback for 95% of the people is the wheel, the other 5% may have bass shakers and even motion, but your missing out on so much information you get in real life. So now drive this sim only with the feedback of that wheel, in a car you've never driven (which is completely different of all the other cars you've ever driven) and then it got power steering as well where you lose a lot of information as well. It would be a horrible experience in my opinion. And lets say ok, we're building this only for the hardcore all in Sim Racers, what should be the minimum requirements? Are they shipping the Simulator witht the game? How should this be even sold? I think the discussion is it realistic or not is always missing out very important aspects of a game. Which this is and iRacing, LMU and whatelese also is. Those are games, even if they call themselves simulators.
Would be nice to compare the rain-physics as well with your experience. The rubber-line supposed to have lower grip as well. To be fair, with the TimeTrial you basically get fresh tyres every lap. Doesn't mean the physics change dramatically over time, but the tyres behave a bit different over 90° C and punish too aggressive slip-angles here and there. In the earlier days (till 1.1 or so) the 650S was very challenging to drive once the tyres reached even close 90° and every bit too much slip-angle/throttle was prone to end in a spin. At that time I was winning quite some online-races just by knowing how to nanny the tyres till the end. I avoided TimeTrials because the way to (over-)drive for one fast lap was not the way to survive even 5 laps because of tyre-overheat. Instead of tweaking this behavior to a more reasonable level, Reiza just killed it, which ended in those drift-physics as a result. 1.6 seems like small step back in this regard and not really new at all.
It’s a fun driving game but not a rewarding sim experience for me. I know it’s not easy to convey the way it feels with words but your descriptions seem spot on to me.
I keep coming back to this game, and putting it away again. Completely get what you mean about the weird planted front end and really forgiving rear feeling on the corners. I Thought your comments about coasting were interesting. In real life, if I'm not engine braking while coasting, I feel like the car is running away from me and things are happening faster. Wondering if that is the feeling you are talking about. For me realism is most important. I want to feel like I'm driving an actual car and can hopefully drive with some finesse. I drive a MX-5 and Cooper S hatch so not the best comparison but yeah.
I like realism, but I rely on guys like you to give honest feedback on what's realistic since I don't and never will have a chance to know what a real GT3 or Prototype etc. feels and sounds like in real life. I'm mainly on iRacing but am always curious about what's out there. Thanks for videos like this James!
Personally I'd like it as real as possible and if it can be fun to drive at the same time that's a great thing. I do really like AMS2 especially now since the update. There are some things that could be slightly better but overall it's great fun
A sim game is never gonna be 1:1 real life, can never be due to too many factors. But what ams2 is good at is trying to equate the fun of driving in real life, the pleasure of driving and speed sensation you get especially in VR + motion sim is closer than other sims I’ve tried. I actually get excited jumping in the game as I would when I drive my sports cars in real life.
New bop and slighty stiffer carcass sidewall out for the gt3 cars. Reduce engine breaking of the car by increasing the engine breaking number in the setup. That will help reduce the excessive slowdown while coasting. I used default plus and no damping with 50 fx but ffb can very subjective so yh. A lot an be impacted with learning setups in the game so id recommend doing that if you hace the time which i suspect you don't
So you’re telling a real gt3 driver how to drive. Setup wise, this was a hotlap session the biggest thing ams2 drivers do. They take a fast guys setup and run it. I’ve done that at IMS so when I pass the s/f line it blows up. The setups aren’t made for racing , just a few laps or maybe a qual session
Appreciate the comment, will give it another try at some point for sure. Always tricky to get everything nailed when testing these things, a lot to think about lol
I like racing sim generally because of the racing, and usually the "realistic" sim have the best racing. The rest like sound and visuals are just a big plus for me
exactly. If you had a big tier list with all the sims out there, you can see that the more realistic a sim is the better the racing is. Iracing has the cleanest, and best racing out of any sim, and something like GT7 has horrible racing. I think part of it is that the more realistic a game is the harder it becomes, which drives away trolls, kids, and people who don't want to put the effort into learning how to drive.
@Snirby1629 Very true, I can relate alot to that! Iracing=everyone is pretty clean but new players tend to be a bit tooo carefull. Generally the rest of the sims acc, lmu, ac2, etc. You have to go to LFM to get clean racing
I want it to be accurate and realistic as possible. They're simulations or supposed to be. I also agree on how the GT3 cars feel in this game, they still have that slight floaty/drifty/slidy feel, though it's definitely better compared to 1.5. Downforce and open wheel stuff feels good though.
I think for sims realism for sure but arcade or “simcade” fun is ok, sound its pretty important to me idk why but i want the exhaust notes to be as close to real as possible. Also im new to this channel but I’m guessing James is one hell of a talented sim & real world racer to hop on to a game he hasn’t really played much of and be 800ths of a second off world record 😂
I look for both realism and fun. I prefer it to be as realistic as possible while not getting rid of a fun factor. That varies with everyone, i think id prefer a ratio of 90% realism to 10% just pure fun. I think the sim that nails this formula the best is RaceRoom tbh
I’m a causal when it comes to racing sims. I just like to get in Vr and do a couple laps. That being said I’d like to think that the level of accuracy and detail is good. Being that I’ll never drive one of those cars I guess I’ll never know. I am primarily a flight simmer. I am also a real world pilot. I like to have it as accurate as possible in the Sim. I suppose for those that are really into actual driving and racing it’s probably the same.
The tyre models following iceracing and should stick with the grip. It’s a race simulator not ice skating. Way too much snap oversteer and I agree with the slow rolling feeling. I’m sure they’ll get it right. Sooner the better 👊🏻
It's a balance for me, something like sound I do want as realistic as possible, other than that, if a tweak would be a significant improvement to fun, then I like it, but there's a reason I bounce off very arcade style racing games
I think like others have said; I’ll never drive a proper race car so I won’t know what’s ‘real’ anyway. As long as it’s somewhat in the right ball park, then that’s good enough for me. I like how iracing drives, I’m used to it, so I’ll stick with it whilst maybe giving others a go.
I just got this game after a long time away from racing games. It's downloading now 😱 can't wait. I hope it's good with the valve index and my entry level TM TMX. Awesome video. I would have been into the rhubarb in the first 60 seconds lol
I'm all for fun and that's why AMS2 and Raceroom are my go to sims. Enjoy ACC as well but never have fun in iracing and haven't subscribed for some months now. Really don't need to
The setup you loaded is insane. No wonder it felt unrealistic. I wonder if that setup will bring the best laptimes in 1.6. You should review the forcefeedback with the default or default+ ffb that Reiza has done. If you got too much random ffb forces, lower your ffb FX in the settings menu.
I don't really enjoy driving the GT3 cars in AMS2. I find the vintage open-wheel cars to be very fun to drive and this game has a really great selection.
In terms of the sound in any sim, I've literally never even once bothered to check if it's realistic. As long as it sounds "good" and appropriate, like not a v12 in a miata, I don't really care.
I play Sim racing titles as a way to experience being in a real race car and learn driving techniques that would otherwise not be able to apply to anything on the road. It doesn't matter if graphics are not great all I want is a SIM that is the most realistic possible. I play different titles cos each one of them does a "thing" better than the others. All I dream of is racing! And this is the closest I will ever get! 😁
There was an update to the GT 3 last night. This strengthened the sidewalls of the tires, which makes the cars feel more direct. Could you give your opinion on this?
@@Jaaames Okay. If you find the time, it might be a good idea to drive the McLaren in the default setup and pay attention to the tire pressure. This should be around 1.9. In your case, it was much too high at 2.1 and sometimes 2.2.
Regarding FFB: If you don't want your wheel to go crazy on the straight, you can just increase the dampening. Also you can just turn down the FX to decrease that excessive detail
I expect the developer to strive for authenticity, while understanding they will fall short in multiple areas due to limitations of the platform and process, and while also understanding I won't recognize when they fall short as I don't have that real world experience. So, I don't stress it.Unless I get attacked by a dragon mid-race I'm pretty happy as a pleb with how AMS 2 and all the rest of the current games present their content (not you iRacing)
where as i do want realism, i also want fun, hence why i keep going back to ams2. James regarding coasting, reduce engine braking and reduce coast angle on diff, also regarding ffb turn down fx in game, i think you’d prefer the rack force custom ffb also
Accuracy all the way for me! I agree the cars aren't exact, the Porsche 718 doesn't feel or sound like they do in reality. By the way, are all assists off etc? Would love to see a video with authentic on/off and the other options in there. Cheers man!
James watching the Force Feedback section. My gripe with LMU is the wheel is constantly violently shaking and oscillating down the straights. AMS2 feels more 'calm' by comparison, and yet it feels like you're saying exactly the opposite.
Listening to a pro racing driver explain the shortcomings of AMS2's physics is so refreshing compared to people like Gamermuscle who just moan and call it floaty without ever explaining what that means. I really enjoy this game but it's great to know where it falls short of the real thing.
I've noticed the coasting problem too, but I just learned you can adjust the engine braking map on some cars, idk about this one but in the GT-R GT3 you can
My question about the sound: Do you rather the sound is like you'd hear it in your helmet, (muffled), or do you want the sound as a microphone inside the car would pick it up?
Getting a simulator to be "realistic" is like trying to catch unicorn farts with a butterfly net. It is never going to happen. Until we get PC to brain interfaces, they will never be able to match the sensations of driving a real car. And I think they shouldn't even try. Make the sims challenging and believable as possible but keep the fun factor. AMS2, AC, R3E, rF2 have all nailed it in their unique way, which is good enough for me to provide variety. The differences are very minor and I drive each sim exactly the same way with the exact same result. AMS2 is the winner in VR, however. Everything is on ultra and zero drop in framerates. The others I have to drop down to high/medium to keep a steady 60FPS.
if all sims had the same mentality as you, they would all handle the same and sims would never progress. We can get very close to real life(obviously no g-forces, but motion is now a viable option which gets us even closer to the real thing) I didn't understand wanting a realistic but challenging experience until very recently, and the challenge is what makes it fun. Because racing in real life is hard, and when you finally learn a track or hit every corner perfectly in a realistic sim, it feels amazing. That's just my take though.
With AMS2 I discovered Simracing for fun. If you want to have a good time, take a car and play. It's not the same with other simulations (LMU, rFactor 2). Actually, I prefer fun.
Regarding driving the car on the rear, Austin Ogonoski had something similar to say regarding Project Cars 2 (same game engine). Paraphrasing.. he said the front tyres have near infinite grip going into slides so you can go as fast as you can move the steering wheel.
I have no metric to judge realism and never will, so for me it's all about feeling immersive and believable. For me to enjoy a simulation, it has to feel like it makes sense, like I "could see the real thing being like that". At the end of the day, it's a videogame, and not the kind of serious simulation used by motorsports teams to train or develop their cars, even if it is a game in the simulation genre. I think what AMS2 lacks in accuracy, it makes up for in immersion for the most part.
My understanding James is that the Audi and the Huracan Evo 2 are both OP currently so if they get rebalanced and reset the leaderboards you very well might be able to get the world record.
This bop update came out yesterday but the leaderboards didn't get reset. So if the perdormance impact is substancial, some of the records won't be beatable
Crazy to see how many of you shared your opinions on the topic of what you want from a sim title.
I’ve read all of them & it was very interesting, thank you legends🤝
So which game is the best for gt3 currently in your opinion? Is ACC good?
@@konle I hope he responds, I would love to know as well.
My take on sim racing is that since I am not able to experience real life racing cars (of this caliber) or tracks, I'd like to experience something that is as close to the real thing as it can be. That is also why I very much appreciate this kind of feedback from real world race drivers. So cheers James!
Good approach I’d say, glad you enjoyed the video🤝
This is my sentiments as well. I'm closing in on 40. The chances of me getting scouted from sim racing, or suddenly coming into money to get into racing the traditional way is basically zero.
So i want to be able to experience as close to as real as possible with any sim racing i play.
My only exception to that is forza horizon. That's just for funzies.
100% agree - closer to real the better. :)
I always found these hot lap monster setups to be absurd. 21 front and 1 rear anti roll? Of course it would feel weird.
More EB gives you more rotation. Thus the high EB should help you to go even fast through the corners
Best sim racing advice ever written, just the truth. Have fun and drive!
No more truer words have been said
agree😊
I m a die hard ams2 fan, but after a month of iracing I can’t go back to ams2 lol
For me it's the opposite. I'm all for realism as someone who's never going to race irl
For me, AMS2 is the most immersive and fun to sim/game to race right now. I feel the lack of realism which I love but still, is the game the I have been playing/having fun the most lately.
Thanks for the video!
But graphics looked washed
@DieterMaier-r6k that might be a you problem
@@EdisonArias no
@DieterMaier-r6k ...you mean as in real life?....
@DieterMaier-r6k AMS2 graphics look phenomenal on my triple 1440p; sharp and very detailed. Doesn't drop below 100 FPS even with a crowded pack.
Wow, what a comment. Thanks for leaving your take in here🤝
To watch you driving AMS2 on the limit is a sensation on its own. Spot on analysis about AMS2 pros and cons anyway, as always. And I like in particular your undoubtedly honest objective insights and judgements whatever you do! A rare attitude these days.
No bias here! Glad you enjoyed the video, cheers🤝
Immersion for me, which tends to get me more to realism (without being able to tell what 100% real is as I drive a Mazda suv irl haha)
Agree
Real life pro drivers pretty much all agree on which sim is most realistic. Everything else is just noise.
However, realism on it's own is not enough.
Want realism? Go drive a real car.
Yep I agree, if only we could pick all the good bits & make the ultimate sim racing title😍🙏
@@dkadayinthailand3082yeah cus everyone has money for it
You can adjust engine braking amount (to help keep coasting speed) in the setup and you can adjust the wheel from shaking on straights through settings in your wheel software.
Yup, as I said in the video could definitely get it closer to realism with some fine tuning.
Im not sure about other sims as I mostly play AMS2 and LMU, but you can lower the level of engine braking to reduce the slowing feeling on coast.
good point
wtf im a real life driver and had no idea that was a thing lol
Yea this is a big one that is often over looked, i always go in and change it right down no matter what car. If needed I then start turning it back up. Should default to lowest in my opinion.
How do you turn it down in AMS2? @@RustyRacingUK
Yea, his engine braking was set to max
You described the coasting feeling spot on in corners, if they can fix that and some small stuff here and there, then this sim is going to be great. 😊
Use default+ force feedback or custom force feedback 4 lines from gamermuscle video that is only rack forces
He runs a sc2 ultimate. He has his ffb I’m sure to feel like the real car
Rack Force FFB for the win
It eliminates all the unnecessary noise
I've been using that rack force only config and it's been great!
Will give it a look, cheers🤝
@@Jaaames another vote for rack force only. I do turn up fx some because it triggers TrueForce which makes my rig feel alive.
I guess the sims are getting better and improving with each update
realism = fun to me
There was a time I would say realism to answer your question. Then iRacing dropped the corvette GT3, and I hated the sound from inside the cockpit. I went and watched some onboard clips, and they got it pretty dang close. It sounds not so good in real life from inside the car as well. Kind of like some angry bees. 😆
I always want 100% pure realism
Realism, the simulation and immersion is key for me.
Great video James! Thanks for sharing your experience with the game!
This is what sim racing needs, honest opinions from honest drivers from the cars that they drive.
Just the raceroom mclaren 720s left to go for the full set of comparisons
Does ACC have the 720S GT3 Evo as well?
@flyingphoenix113 yeah it was part of their 2024 grid update at some point
Yeah, that'll be really interesting. R3E is my main sim, but I had little issues switching to ACC on occasion whereas I haven't been able to really figure out iRacing for the past decade or so. James' and other comments helped me figure out why that might be.
@@andid-42 that's interesting, as someone who mains r3e too, acc feels quite horrible to get into coming from r3e, where iracing in the other hand feels more natural for me :D
👀
Fair points you make tbf, thanks for leaving your take in the comments🤝
Another great video James. For me the feel of the car is more important than looks. AMS2 always felt a bit woolly but now after the update is better.
I don’t feel connected with IRacing.
LMU and RF2 are the benchmarks I reckon.
Most impressive gfx of all the race titles. AMS2 is super fun.
It’s very well optimised that’s for sure
The custom ffb profile from GamerMuscle video completely made the game way more connected and realistic. I wouldn’t really play the game before and now with the custom ffb it feels way more authentic.
I do simracing just for fun. I love immersivity, I love the games that make easier my "suspension of disbelief".
For me, the question is: Are the skills and techniques required to drive this sim the same as the ones I need to drive a real car or race in another sim? If the question is yes, it's realistic enough for me.
A good way of looking at it for sure🫡
I play for fun and immersion - I don’t mind this class in AMS2 but where it shines is historic and fantasy type races IMO.
Ill never own or sit in a racecar, so for me it actually means something when real racers says its realistic. However if the fun bit isnt there, im out - so a bit of both 😇 Thank you James, you are a legend!
🤝
Not a racing driver so for me i prefer realisim and accurate sound, interior and exterior, how the car should feel and so on, thanks for the video!
So for me it's beeing so much immersed that I think it's the real thing, even if it's not exactly the real thing (but very close tho you know, like in touching distance)
And just some mind game here:
Imagine the exact FFB on the wheel as you have it on the wheel in real life, the physics are perfect, it's like in real life.
🤝
Great video
I had to turn wheel squeal sounds Down by half because it was so loud it was tripping me out.
🫡🤝
Personally I'd like it as real as possible and if it can be fun to drive at the same time that's a great thing. I do really like AMS2 especially now since the update. There are some things that could be slightly better but overall it's great fun
I like AMS2 but I agree with James…the physics of tyres and suspension is akin to trying to fish out a bar of soap that you dropped in the bathtub
@ yea, but LMU is kinda surprising, i’ve done a couple rookie races at monza and nobody crashed emediatly, which is better than acc at least
To slow coasting is down to the default diff preload being to high
Plus the setup loaded has max engine breaking
276kph on the Kemmel straight suggests a low downforce setup or that the car has not been too heavily restricted.
Really don't need to
I love iracing but man it’s so expensive: it’s not just a monthly sub as you know. Sometimes it costs over $200 for a season of tracks. Shit adds up
The sound is by far the best out of any game
I'm never going to be a real-life racing driver so FUN and VR immersion are what matter to me.
Realism. If I can't drive the car irl I just want as accurate impression as possible
As long as it sounds "good" and appropriate, like not a v12 in a miata, I don't really care.
good point
you can eat sh!it if it tastes good for you
Fairplay, makes sense
I play Sim racing titles as a way to experience being in a real race car and learn driving techniques that would otherwise not be able to apply to anything on the road. It doesn't matter if graphics are not great all I want is a SIM that is the most realistic possible. I play different titles cos each one of them does a "thing" better than the others. All I dream of is racing! And this is the closest I will ever get! 😁
There was an update to the GT 3 last night. This strengthened the sidewalls of the tires, which makes the cars feel more direct. Could you give your opinion on this?
Sod’s Law it got updated just after I recorded this video. Will try them at some point
@@Jaaames oooooh sign me up for that video
@@Jaaames Okay. If you find the time, it might be a good idea to drive the McLaren in the default setup and pay attention to the tire pressure. This should be around 1.9. In your case, it was much too high at 2.1 and sometimes 2.2.
i thought there is a setting somewhere for the amount of engine braking, no?
if you don't have a bass shaker on your rig and you're worried about the sound of the car you are missing out of real immersion. best sim mod ever.
Noted, will take a look👀
Regarding FFB: If you don't want your wheel to go crazy on the straight, you can just increase the dampening. Also you can just turn down the FX to decrease that excessive detail
At least on my DD wheel it was filtering setting, AMS2 somehow needs much more filtering than other sims.
@@viktorianas since its less realistic it adds a lot of extra manufactured detail to try and make it seem more realistic. AC does the same thing
Would love to see you give Raceroom the opportunity nobody else wants to.
James regarding coasting, reduce engine braking and reduce coast angle on diff, also regarding ffb turn down fx in game, i think you’d prefer the rack force custom ffb also
you’re also running a time trail setup with low DF and complaining the cars moving around at high speed 🤐 come on dude 😂
Accuracy all the way for me! I agree the cars aren't exact, the Porsche 718 doesn't feel or sound like they do in reality. By the way, are all assists off etc? Would love to see a video with authentic on/off and the other options in there. Cheers man!
I train 2 gt3 drivers, 1 mustang, 1 bmw, the one sim they say feels real is none, not a single one, so have fun
I purely do sim racing to compete, that’s what I want from it, some good competition. Realism is a secondary but also very important. Fun is a given
James watching the Force Feedback section. My gripe with LMU is the wheel is constantly violently shaking and oscillating down the straights. AMS2 feels more 'calm' by comparison, and yet it feels like you're saying exactly the opposite.
i think thats just because of cold tires, once there warm its a lot better.
Listening to a pro racing driver explain the shortcomings of AMS2's physics is so refreshing compared to people like Gamermuscle who just moan and call it floaty without ever explaining what that means. I really enjoy this game but it's great to know where it falls short of the real thing.
Tbh I’m still thrilled the cows are animated 🙂. The cars do “float” off throttle at apex
Interesting question, I’d say having the option for both would be good
@@Jaaames agree on having the option. Always the best. I'm just curious as to what you would pick if you had both options.
me: i want LPM1 cars and on 24 hrs le mans race track is my wet dream and idk what sim offer it
Getting a simulator to be "realistic" is like trying to catch unicorn farts with a butterfly net.
Physically: real > fun, sound: fun and good > real
With AMS2 I discovered Simracing for fun. If you want to have a good time, take a car and play. It's not the same with other simulations (LMU, rFactor 2).
Actually, I prefer fun.
Regarding driving the car on the rear, Austin Ogonoski had something similar to say regarding Project Cars 2 (same game engine).
Paraphrasing.. he said the front tyres have near infinite grip going into slides so you can go as fast as you can move the steering wheel.
Fun? Realism? I'm just here for SR.
Lol
Good to know👍
@@Jaaames I just saw Ethan had the world record at Spa last night in the Macca so as the poster above said it must have already happened.
You need to test Automobilista 1
better physics, better ffb and better AI
