  • We are back again with the first Kia to be released on our channel. This 1.6L 2013 Kia Rio has a couple bolt-on chassis modifications and makes a full 138 horsepower at the crank. We met up with a class from Douglas College who has been working alongside with Evilla Motorsports. Based out of California, Evilla Motorsports has designed parts to improve overall handling of this consumer car.
    Enjoy!

    "As a car enthusiast, i would laugh at a kia rio" then you are not a car enthusiast, only a car snob.
    The best thing of car entusiasts is the guys that take weird and different cars and do things to them.
    Everyone mods a vw or what ever, but only a few take the daihatsu ( like the mcm guys ), and different kinds of cars and do stuff with them. Those are the real enthusiasts, the ones that do stuff different from the others.

      Though I want to agree with you. When you look at the context of what he was saying, he's laughing at the absurdity of this "boring, but very good car" being a performance vehicle.
      Which is completely understandable and expected as nearly all new Rios aren't being turned into SpecB racers or performance builds.
      He was saying that it's unassuming nature is a positive, because it still is "a good car" and in these modern times especially, more well known "enthusiast" models generally carry a negative stigma to those who aren't fellow enthusiasts.

Mine is a commuter but sees autocross and road courses often. The Rio and Evilla have exceeded my expectation and I dont plan on selling it when it's done with commuting.

    As the owner of this little Kia - I agree with all of what Roads Untraveled said and am happy there are organizations such as Evilla Motorsports who can help commuters have a more engaging drive. It's also finding projects that are odd and different that curbs my interest - yes it is a geeky car and it's the whole point. It's a fun car to drive because your foot is always to the floorboard.
    Next up Evilla Motorsports - these handmade parts truly make a difference and he builds parts for the Kia Forte Turbo and the Hyundai Veloster. Both of which are based on a similar chassis, but with much more power. What the suspension modifications did was to make the car communicate better and take care of certain shortcomings. So thank you to Roads Untraveled and Evilla Motorsports for this project, it was fun to do. First thing I am going to do, is to enhance the shifter feel.

    No, the badge didn’t throw me. As a car enthusiast I see past the badge on a car and look at the work that’s been put in instead, and judge based off of driving dynamics. Not hating on you Marcus, but in the end it shouldn’t really matter what badge is on a car.

    • @RoadsUntraveled
      @RoadsUntraveled  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Is this entire video not me judging the car based on its driving dynamics? Lol. Car drives great for the most part as I stated in the video. Definitely far from perfect or inspiring, though. And that has nothing to do with the badge.

So shout out to the Roads Untraveled team and thank you for the honest feedback :).

    • @iDrive4fun93
      @iDrive4fun93 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, first things first. My comment wasn’t intended to judge your video or your ability to review a car. Actually, your channel is the one of the best because of your honesty and humility, just because you have driven Lamborghini’s and other very prestigious cars, you will still do a review on a car that’s worth much, much less, i.e. this Rio. The car review was informative and thorough.
      I should have worded my OG comment different, what I am trying to comprehend is what you mean when you say a Kia or Hyundai(only brought up because they are based off the same platforms) should throw an enthusiast off. I am assuming it’s not negative but I just don’t understand the comment. In my opinion this kind of diversity is what makes the car scene awesome. Where I live there are a decent amount of modified Kia’s and Hyundai’s, I personally own one, and there is a guy who works around the University of Virginia who owns a quite heavily modified Forte Turbo. And it’s a pretty sweet car, and tastefully done. But in the end everyone has there own ideas and opinions, and that’s also what keeps the car scene diverse and unique.
      Anyways, thanks for pumping out the awesome content! I have been a subscriber since very early on, I think I have watched just about every vid of yours, keep up the good work!

    My little 2013 Kia Rio has served me well for 5 years now, has plenty of pep for city driving (turn off ECO mode, that shit turns it into a slug), and with the rear seats down holds a surprising amount of shit in it. Gets great gas mileage even with ECO mode turned off, although I wish the gas tank was a little bigger. Because they're so small, it's easy to dust people off the line at a light and I do it all the time. I've fit 4 average size adults in my car perfectly fine, although I wouldn't want to sit in the back on a road trip.
    They may not be sportscars, but they hold their own and I would totally recommend a Kia Rio to someone looking for a daily driver that is economical, comfortable, and still has a little bit of kick when you need it most.

    • @applepoop10
      @applepoop10 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a 2006 KIA Rio and everything you just listed here is much worse on my car! That G4ED engine only makes 110 HP and it’s connected to a slushbox 4 speed auto tranny. Power management sucks balls and the transmission slowly shifts into gears; if you want to merge onto the interstate safely, you must floor the gas pedal to get the transmission to downshift into the lower gears. The only good thing about my 06 Rio is that it gets a constant 30 MPG on the highway and 28 in the city.

To make a correction, there are only 400 manual version of the "SX" Trim in the United States. Almost all the SX models had the 6spd auto with paddle shifters. There are a ton of base models with the manual and other countries have a lot more of them across all trims.

    If you feel like the transmission is soft that's probably due to proper lubrication signifying the transmission fluid is doing its job as to not damage the gears. I have a 2013 1.4 Turbo Diesel Rio 92bhp which shifts and regains torque immediately if your revs end up around 2000 after shifting. The front of the car will lift itself up faster after shifting and the engine won't "hang". I beat many cars in the traffic lights by utilizing its torque on 2000-3000 RPM. I am very satisfied with its transmission and the car overall, as in 8 years now it has not had an issue in anything besides light bulbs whose average lifespan is 5-7 years anyway. A smooth transmission is soft on the gears and the engine. If you wish to slam gears your transmission will die out years earlier than it is supposed to. When a transmission is rough, there is more friction which reduces its lifespan and make it become softer as time progresses and the compartments wear out. Shifting like an ape and using excessive force on the stick and clutch will only lead to damage faster.
    Also, regarding your quote on the description, you are allowed to go to war. All you have to do is enlist to a PMC. It feels weird having someone seeing racing as a substitute for war. All you need is dumbness (already there) a disregard for human life and the capacity to do things you are told without questioning. If you are obstructed from going to war, don't go and bring it to your neighborhood, there are kids there, just go to the track and "fight" with your friends where you can abuse that stick and rip it apart all you want.

    I have a 2006 Kia Spectra SX, the forebearer to the modern Rio SX in my opinion, and I enjoy it. It's no sports car by any means, but it gets decent mpg and has more than enough pepe to get out of it's own way and up to speed on the highway and handles nicely for a lower end vehicle. As for the 2013 Rio SX hatch (and even the newer models), I think it's one of the better looking sub-compact cars in the segment. Personally, I like small cars because they are easy to maneuver, generally cheap to ensure and fuel. Obviously I'm a cheap @$$ mofo, so I'll most definitely have a Rio SX on my radar when I'm looking for a newer car. Great video...thanks for sharing!!

    An 1990’s civic still handles better than this Rio even with all its modifications. Thanks to Honda’s full independent rear suspension and double wish bone suspension in the front (Plus it’s massive aftermarket support). When it’s comes to having fun in a econobox car, Honda will always take the cake. I still love the look of this Rio, it’s sharp and doesn’t scream rice unlike a lot of Honda’s. If you're making payments on it... it's not a beater. a $500 accord/corolla/sentra/forester/legacy from the 90's is a beater. This is someones first car. You would still get full coverage for one of these fam. You crazy.

    The true Kia sports car: 2011 Kia forte Koup

    • @applepoop10
      @applepoop10 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm no. That would be the KIA Stinger. The Kia Forte Koup is just a econobox car with 2 doors.

  • @swazi5
    @swazi5 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The Stinger is a good start, next thing they need to do is change that pathetic excuse for a logo. Honestly the name Kia kinda inherently sucks as well...

    i have this car in a 2016. its a decent car for 15 grand. i wish it was more powerful tho like everyone else. it really is slow and u need to thrash it to get out into traffic. dont ever snap a front lug stud. appreantly u need to replace the hub and bearing and itll be a few hundred for a 3 dollar stud. and kia doesnt wanna warranty anything like that
