I rented one of these (a 2013 model) and it was suprisingly well-built, peppy, and roomy! It was the more basic model with hubcaps, but still looked quite sharp. I did alot of driving in a week vacation and still had a quarter tank of fuel left. Bear in mind I was driving either alone or with 1 friend, nobody sat in back.
I test drove one of these new in 2012 and was really impressed for what it was. It felt very solid. It was a lot peppier than I was expecting. The interior design was really nice for a subcompact. I ended up going with the Nissan Versa sedan over this. What a huge mistake.
I don't live in the States. The Rio for our market has drums in the back. You have to step up to a Cerato (known as Forte in the USA) to get rear disc brakes
The sonic would look better with the giant gold bow tie gone. Have you noticed on most new cars , no spare tire, you get a can of fix a flat that's fine till you have a blowout or run over something the size of a small doorknob. Wait for the SX this fall, navigation system that replaces the UVO system push button start ; leather seats, a sunroof, and front seat heating.
I have a Jeep Liberty that I'll be paying off in about a month or so & I'm looking to get something more fuel efficient. I'm torn between this, the Sonic, Dart and the new Nissan Versa Note. Help a guy out!!!
Want a car (2011-2018) for putting an electric bicycle through the hatchback door and room for a dog (lab) as well, so Honda Fit probably makes sense as it has more room. Is the only upside to a Rio that it is cheaper than a Fit?
We have the new Sportage and I test drove this Rio since I was considering getting one. I love Kia's new designs and the list of features for the money is the best in each respective segment... the only let down, and its a big one, is the brakes!! Just as seen in this vid, they are not confidence-inspiring at all! The Rio "might" be forgiven for this because it has drums in the back but the Sportage has 4 wheel discs and its the same thing. It was really a let down... decided on a Fiesta instead
Hey motorweek, I am a college student who is looking to buy a new car but can't decide which car to buy. I am highly considering buying this 5 door rio but is it reliable? I am also interested in the honda fit. Please reply thanks!!
I'm surprised at the difference between the MPGs from the US to the UK version of Kia's cars. Kia's 1.6L european engine gets 52.3MPG (Imperial)/62MPG (US). Makes me wonder why they don't just use the same engines world wide.
really? I think the Sedan looks hideous and the hatch better. the rear end on a sedan looks chunky and square. I guess they knew how to style and sell I suppose, two designs for 2 different people lol
Great review as usual. Hyundai and Kia are kicking Honda and Toyotas ass with technology. The civic doesn't even have direct injection or a 6 speed auto for god sakes. I do find Kia Hyundai have come along way but are getting WAY TO PRICEY and starting to offer less standard features. They offer expensive packages for what people really want, nav, uvo, leather etc and that is where they get you. Not to mention the resale value on Kia Hyundais are still ver poor. In a few years they will beat ou
18K isn't expensive.. The Yaris, Fit, Fiesta, Sonic, etc. are about the same or more than that. And seriously? GTI? why are you even comparing the two? Shows you don't know anything about cars
it's purposedley rigged. Gas is sold by the liter in Europe instead of the gallon so while the car over there is better MPG wise, you still pay more for gas.
This is a good car but it seems you have to pay for styling. All the eco boxes are looking better than they have in the past but the higher pricing doesnt justify the means. $18k for this?...who ever figures out to have the lowest price eco box will sell the shit out of them. If chevy sold their sonic at $12k like theyre suppose to no one would bother looking at the others. And nissan wtf are you thinking with the versa?...release the hatchback fast.

Oof. Major L. What are you driving now

The rio does have 4-wheel discs. The fiesta on the other hand, doesn't.
If they think the seats materials are cheap in here what do they consider the yaris' materials to be?

@TheCoolfez style. Accent has more practicality but the Rio5 looks more sporty which I'm sure you heard quite a lot in this video.
@Jeremandre oh yeah, have you checked out the new versa?

hells, grfat! grate productive what's your opinion about vhis !!!
why get this car over the Hyundai accent? just curious

Because the way that emission standards are done are different.
I'd take this over the Fiesta or Yaris anyday
@TheCoolfez sporty suspension = fun to drive
Depreciation on the Ford Focus and Fiesta are far higher than the Kia's though.
looks great, too bad they didn't bring the 3-door
Impressive numbers for that 1.6 motor...
Civic, corollas and sentras barely get those numbers with their
1.8 & 2.0 motors...
they are not shipping the 5-door version here :( but am gonna get the sedan anyway :)
This car is a lot better than the yaris and versa
Cheap GTI is exactly what I was looking for ..
This guy's voice haunts my dreams.
It does, it's in the trunk, but under a lid.
this dude john davis looks the same and sounds the same since like 1989 videos
This is one of the few vehicles where the sedan version looks better than the hatchback version. Same with Hyundai Accent and Chevy Sonic.
really? I think the Sedan looks hideous and the hatch better. the rear end on a sedan looks chunky and square. I guess they knew how to style and sell I suppose, two designs for 2 different people lol
I´d go for this one!
.....although Ford has improved significantly, reliability also lags behind Kia.
A good starter car.
the boot is considered a door in hatchbacks
I got the fully loaded SX. WOW great car and fun to drive. So much leg room and hip/shoulder room for me ( 6'4" 220lbs ) Check out my review on it.
The Honda Fit is the best overall value, and much more space.
4:39 the driver hit the cone

Why does this guy talk like that o.O
try it. it's fun.
kia has better design than honda and toyota cars.
Still true 8yrs after your comment.

The SX wheels r the best.
@Jeremandre this car's more a competitor to the Versa, But I would take this over both of those fugly cars.
the one at the back is the fifth
it's purposedley rigged. Gas is sold by the liter in Europe instead of the gallon so while the car over there is better MPG wise, you still pay more for gas.
This car competes with the VW polo.
6speed? Honda civic doesn't even have that
I dont know but appearance wise, the sonic has the most dorkiest taillights. Overdone IMO.
wow. The Rio is faster than a Honda Civic!!!LOL
It looks like a crab!

i would buy this car before i'd by the sentra
my buick century weighs 862 lbs more than this car and it also does 0-60 in 9 seconds. my car weighs 3349 lbs.
pfft... the euro spec does 88mpg
You are waiting your time here. Be honest about it. You are spamming. Get your damn insurance business out of here. Thank you.
lol. the accent costs 1000 bucks more and gets 3 mpg's less than the rio. lol
47
lolol
Yaris feels cheaper
