    Man, 9 years later and you’re still helping people. Just replaced the thermostat and bled the system on my ‘01 Legacy Outback. I drained the coolant from the radiator drain plug first, which helped with the mess. Your video made this fix very simple and quick. Longest part of the process was just waiting for the car to heat back up. Thank you so much!

    I just had our 1998 outback into the mechanic and was told it would cost $2000+ to replace the thermostat as the entire engine had to be removed to do it. We thought the old boy was done for...replacing it myself this week. Thanks for posting.

    Nice work ratchets. The only thing I would do different is I would leave the radiator cap off and add coolant as the engine is running. The coolant level will drop when the thermostat opens. Your videos are getting better detail as you're making more of them. Good job!

      I worked at a radiator shop my friend and that's exactly how we did it leave it open so you can see when the thermostat opens and drops the fluid level and you add more

    Wow, thanks so much for this video! Never even knew about the air bleeder valve!
    This is the first time I’ve owned a Subaru, and I was blown away that the thermostat wasn’t on top like every other car I’ve owned. This is a bitch to deal with, especially since it’s so cold out where I’m at right now.

  • @sleepwalker29

    Actually if you pull the emergency brake before jacking it up. You stretch the cable to the hand brake everytime. You pull the hand brake after you jack it up, and release it before lowering it. Supposed to use wheel stops behind tires before jacking it up in neutral.

    Pretty good video. Just an aside you do NOT need to use a Subaru dealer thermostat. I have used many dozen Stant and Gates thermostats with 100K+mile results. To refill a subaru, take off the top coolant hose from the radiator side and leave it attached at the engine. Grab a large funnel and pour a gallon of coolant into the engine directly thru that top hose and then reattach it.. Then fill the radiator. DONE.

    Never did a thermostat and used your video for guidance. Last owner's mechanic put in the wrong type thermostat. I found a Carquest at Advance that is exact OE and is also the larger size like the Subaru part. ( $20 with the gasket) I'm hoping the wrong one was what was giving me issues. I think it was getting stuck closed and causing rapid hot temps. This happened interminantly only but once is too much. I used a big old towel under my catch pan which kept the garage floor dry for the extra coolant that didn't make it into the pan.

    Does it matter where the jiggle valve is? I replaced my thermostat and the old thermostat has the jiggle valve pointed towards the rear of the car so that's how I installed the new one. Was fine for a few days then car overheated. The lower hose has never gotten hot since I replaced it. I noticed your jiggle valve is facing forwards. Does it matter? Thank you!

    Hi! Why is there the bleeder screw at the highest point when you still instructed to keep adding coolant as the level went down and having to repeat 3 times and pouring more fluid in? Isn't the purpose of the bleeder valve is to get rid of all the air in the system? I have a problem of hearing sloshing sound under my dash and can't get rid of the trapped air. A home mechanic did a timing belt job and replaced the thermostat with a cheap $10 one. I told him about the sloshing sound and he said it would go away. It drove fine and for 2 months just went on short trips. I went on a long trip of 100 miles and major overheating. I think air bubbles surrounded the thermostat too and caused problems. I could hear the coolant boiling but added 1/2 gallon of coolant. A mechanic tested with purple dye for head gasket problem and tested good. He said doing the test removed a lot of the bubbles. He was right, it removed about 3/4ths of the bubbles and a week later the same problem with I think just the bubbles left in the line. So again major overheating. Another shop looked at it and said just once in a while keep adding fluid until there's no more bubbles. That's what I had done about 5 times. I also feel the cheap thermostat might be malfunctioning. What do you think the real problem is? Thanks!

    • @grainit
      @grainit 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can also gurgle burp, squeeze the top radiator hose a few times to get all the bubbles to bunch together i leave both the radiator caps off till im overflowing from one or the other.

      Because Subaru engineers their Thermostats to the highest standards. And A thermostat that is cheap will probably get caught in the open position and over heat your car like crazy.

    • @gabecabrera1023
      @gabecabrera1023 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      bobkin611 thermostats that get stuck open don’t overheat your car, when it gets stuck open it doesn’t allow your car to heat up ENOUGH, when it gets stuck closed- it doesn’t let coolant in and overheats.

    • @JOATJESSE
      @JOATJESSE 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You run the risk of an incorrectly designed thermostat. The part could be slightly larger or smaller. The o-ring gasket may not be the correct size or may be made from a different type of material. O-ring material is important depending on where it is used because the materials are designed to withstand different chemicals (oil, gas, coolant, air) and different temperature ranges.

    There is an easier way to get rid of the air. Instead of put the cap on and letting it run you can use the throttle control to rev the engine and when the thermostat opens it 'pops' for lack of a better word sucking in the coolant. It can do it a few times. If you don't want to spend too long doing it that's the quickest way.
