    Apprentice remodeler here. I have the jigsaw, oscilating, and recip heads that I got in a promo last Christmas with the standard power base and it’s been an invaluable tool in my kit for varied projects. I’ve used it to demo old studs in weird places, trim stubbier screws, nip drip edge, cut trim, cut tile, detail sand and many more odd jobs and it’s been worth every penny I spent. Often it’s saved the day on a project that would have been postponed for a tool pickup. I don’t think much of the power on my old jobmax compared to the new model, it bogs down from time to time but it’s a wonderful tool and you could fit all the attachments and a couple batteries in a dedicated pack out box.

    I specialize in preservation of historical properties. We have worked in DC, Gettysburg, Virginia and all over the country rehabing the places you take your kids on vacation and both the 18v and corded version of this tool have never left my bag. Changing the tool heads is a total pain but the portability, the access to 5 tools without the extra weight ( jig, receipt, oscillator, sander and hammer head)is non comparable. They may not be the best individual tools(there are way better jigs and recips) but this simply works. I use the sander quite a bit, in places a sheet or random orbit would never get. Plus the variable speed control trigger provides you with the ability to feather sand or sand with a lot more control. If you run Ridgid tools, this is a no brainer

    These tools are fantastic. I do commercial HVAC work, and don’t need mine too often, but when you need it you need it. I have a 12 volt base and the 4amp corded base, and most of the heads. Also a super compact way to keep so many tools stored on a work van with limited space. I store the bases and all the heads and charger in a ridgid pro organizer.

    Boom! Funny just last week after registering my new roto-zip head to complete my jobmax tool collection I sent a message asking about a brushless update to the jobmax. Very happy about this. Two years ago I replaced an aging Milwaukee 18v tool line with the ridgid brushless and a mix of octane in there I have been blown away. I'm an electrician and recommend ridgid to anyone in question. I use the recip head the most for cutting emt and armour off cable with the older 18v x4 and with this octane update will only get more out of each available head. No one can touch the ridgid warranty and now the tools match if not out perform anything on the market. Excited about the jobmax update!

    I am slowly moving away from Dewalt to an all Ridgid lineup… Having a farm, if I haven't found a need for a particular tool yet, I soon will. And, since repair in nearly never around a power source, cordless with extra batteries is a must… Besides being great tools, I like that I can buy reconditioned or factory blemished tools and batteries at a much lower costs. As for this tool, it allows me to move away from two of my few remaining Dewalt tools; the angle drill and metal shears. In case you're wondering, my son and son-in-law are the beneficiaries of my transition… For the record, I really enjoy your straight-forward reviews!

    I have the Ryobi multitool Job max which makes it interchangeable with all Job Max tools. I bought it for the multi tool and added the Rigid right angle impact and the Rigid Rotary Cutting tool later. I definately will get the metal shears. I also picked up a second Ryobi power base so I can put whatever heads I want on and just work without haveping to switch heads. Love it. I know a finishing guy that has the Rigid JobMax, he has 4 power bases and 2 over every head he can find. We search on craigslist or ebay. I wish more vendors made more tools modular and interchangeable.

    Hey guys, I actually own the cordless non-octane model with all the attachments, minus the shears, and I like it but I don't love it. I'm a general contractor that primarily does remodeling and I find the ability to carry 5 tools in one little bag is so handy and has saved my butt in many ways. My partner has the same one though, and he has found that the reciprocating saw attachment, when used heavily for about two years, can cause the bearings inside the tool to wear badly, so much so that he has had to use his LSA to get a new one. Luckily I have learned from his misfortune and haven't had that happen to mine. This is a good tool for a remodeler doing all the trades and needs to carry a variety of tools with him at all times

    Just bought it 2hrs ago, needed it at a job site to finish up some work. Ran to Home Depot, and I was about by the old gen4x and I saw that they finally got the octane line in. Bought the batteries and got the tool for free, also got the jigsaw head and drywall head. This came in clutch. Works great. Ridgid line up is getting stronger. Might have to go back and get that octane angle grinder.

    I have this with the recip saw, roto-zip, and of course the multi-tool it comes with. Love them all. I work in HVAC and do handyman stuff on the side. For going in attics or up on roofs it is nice to have a lighter recip saw. And the multi-tool has a million uses. Next I'm getting the right angle impact driver and the nibbler. I just wish they would bring back an upgraded version of the old ratchet they used to offer (I work on cars too).

    As far as your question regarding who uses this thing: I work in the marine industry, mostly performing woodworking and carpentry, and have found the jobmax to be an absolute blessing. I typically have limited space on boats, and bringing a bunch of individual tools onboard, would be ridiculous. I agree, that the right angle drill leaves a little to be desired, but it absolutely does function. The jigsaw has turned out to be incredible, and although the multi-tool doesn't really compare to my fein, it is my go to when it comes to quick cuts.

    I was watching Jeff using the recip. attachment to do pruning. One trick I learned is while cutting, move the tool back and forth as you would a hand saw. Because the stroke is so short, the kerf fills with swarf (sawdust) and slows the cutting. By moving the tool back and forth, it clears the sawdust from the blade and the cut will be faster.

    I have the 18v Gen 4 or 5 of this. To be honest, I forget I have it most of the time. When I first got it, I did half of the outlets in a basement finish with the multitool head and the other half with my M12 multitool. I much prefer the M12 for it's size while cutting in drywall. However, part of that basement was Car Siding and the Ridgid 18v excelled with it being much more powerful than the M12. I've also had similar situations with the Jobmax right angle drillI and my M12 RAD. I say this tool is great to have, but it's not a daily driver. As always, excellent review! Side note- I recently unsubscribed from another 'popular' tool review channel because they have become complete corporate shills. PLEASE keep giving your honest opinions and don't buckle to the man!

    I am so glad that I have recently gone with the Ridgid line of tools for my choice for cordless tools. I recently bought the drill/impact driver set and the circular saw. Here are the factors that did it for me: I am new to woodworking and need to know that I am getting good tools that will last. I don't need the top of the line, but I also don't want junk. I am not concerned that all my tools match either, so I am no fanboy of any one manufacturer. Ridgid comes out on top, because you can get the tools plus batteries and the batteries are replaced for life as long as you register your products! That's right, for life. Imagine how much you will save on batteries alone. No one even comes close to that deal. Also their tools have the limited lifetime warranty on parts and service. What a deal! I already have an excellent corded Skilsaw but when I saw that you could buy two batteries, the charger and get the circular saw for free, well I just couldn't pass it up. They are giving Dewalt a run for their money as far as I can see, especially in the DIY market.

    I've had the x4 version for many years, it's great with remodeling to get into tight spaces. Cutting holes where you couldn't use another saw or driving screws where a traditional impact driver wouldn't fit. Basically if you can stick your arm in there you can stick the JobMax in there.
    Been waiting on an update as they skipped over Gen5 for this tool, I'm excited to see the power of Octane. Though I wish they'd changed up the base a little. Like if there was a lever that pulled in the attachment tabs instead of sticking your fingers in the little holes to push them in manually. Then IDK if they could have found a better placement for the light, it works well with some attachments but not others.

    So the octane tools communicate with the battery to determine what kind of tool it's connected too so that it can optimize power output for said tool. How does that work on a tool with interchangeable heads though? Can the battery even tell what head its using? I have a few of the octane tools, including this one, and love them all, but I've always wondered about that

    I have two, a corded one and the original 18v. My corded one is so old it had the non tool free head. I put the 90 degree drill head on it and leave it there. Which means I need to plug it in but I don't need it that often. It is a good option for occassional tight drilling work. I'd want a dedicated 90 degree drill if I needed something like that often. Then I use the 18V one as the multi tool. I might have to upgrade to the Octane. I have a regular jig saw and recip saw so I wouldn't buy those options. The metal snips seems like something I might look into. Thanks.

    I got the kit special that had the jobmax "free" with a big charger and 6a 3a batteries. I like "vibro saws" as I call multitools. I'd buy the metal cutter before buying another power one but I already have either corded, 4x, or gen5 or air versions of all the other attachments so I don't plan on buying anything soon.
    The Jobmax is louder and shakier than my Harbor Freight (plugin) vibro saw but it's cordless so it'll get used more.
    As a group it would make a nicely portable very complete kit. I know lots of handymen are swearing by it but I was thinking I'd want my gf to have a set so I don't have to drag 50lbs of tools out every weekend.

    I’ve been using it with the rotary head + dremel collet set to make it 1/4 inch + diamond masonry rotozip bit to make the mortar the previous owner of my house had all the way to the edge of the brick, when the rest of the house is inset mortar joints so I can make them match. This is a killer setup for that, been grinding through it like butter. This, in conjunction with the angle grinder has been great for me. I plan to use it for pruning/chopping up lopped tree branches because I have the recip head as well, and the multi tool of course is going to be super handy all around the house for cutting drywall and changing the medicine cabinet height and so on and so forth. I also have been using the multi tool head with diamond sanding pad for cleaning the faces of those bricks too. Will stain the whole house (any advice anyone?) after I match up the mortar joints since the bricks don’t match the old ones either.

      So the home I grew up in in New Orleans needs lots of work. The mortar seems to be turning to dust. In some places it’s completely gone (beneath the windows on the porch. In others the holes are spotty but present, in the playroom that was once a garage this concrete dust is what my dad breathes every day. Trying to figure out how to tackle this now, overwhelmed but I’ve got to help him get out this house before he owes it to the bank for the reverse mortgage.

    • @autonomous44
      @autonomous44 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fee you can use this to clear out any parts that need complete replacing, and they make a special mortar in a caulk tube worth looking into for less severe areas. If the colors don’t match in the end and it’s brick, stain it with masonry stain and sell of it appraises well. Just things to consider.

    • @Fee.1
      @Fee.1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      AUTONOMOUS thanks, that’s all good info. I almost feel like some sort of hot glue product needs to be sprayed on every square inch between the bricks just to seal it in. A chemical product that causes a hardening would be amazing, but too easy. Big brick pouting gun in my future. Not sure if I’m putting liptstick on a pig or not though. I guess maybe grinding it down everywhere a little bit to find non-dustified mortar before applying could work. Any good places to discuss projects like this? Reddit?

It definitely gets hotter than any of the other octane tools I use, that's for sure. Makes me worry a little though because I really haven't pushed it that hard yet. If you have the same issue, it may be a consistent problem and not just a faulty unit. Or maybe theres a quality controll issue and a few bad units slipped through. Ive heard a few people may have gotten bad drills or drivers when octane was 1st released too. Im interested to hear what ridgid says about these multitools heating up.

BTW no issues as far as performance, breakdowns, the only thing is Ridgid tools aren’t meant for small handed people or yellow team folks. Sorry I’d to throw it out there.

    For many years I have used both the 12V and 18V JobMax power handles with all but two of the JobMax heads. After speaking with RIDGID numerous times they always say where a head says X torque, X speed, and the like, the power handle used, be it 12V or 18V, does not change those numbers. The power handle controls runtime based on battery.
    Never have I experienced any power difference between the 12V nor 18V, thus 99% of the time I grab the 12V. That is why I question purchasing the Octane handle, again according to RIDGID, and their literature the power handle does not add any more power to the present and past heads. Other manufactures may design their multitools where a higher voltage produces more power to their heads, but according to RIDIGD their power handle does not. Yes, I realize my above comment may go against a common assumption about 12V vs 18V. If you doubt my comment do your own research, I did much research and called RIDGID. Oh, notice on any of the JobMax head box’s there is not any designation of a power change using 12V or 18V; it is same-same.

      charles king: Hi Charles, thank you for your reply. Until RIDGID updates their JobMax heads producing more power as in torque and RPM supporting their Octane handle, upgrading to Octane does not make sense. Until then the 12V or 18V is okay for me. For much of my work instead of using the RIDGID drill/driver or impact driver, I use JobMax and its heads. Again, I must reiterate “according to RIDGID phone tech support, their written tech support, and literature, their 12V and 18V JobMax power bodies do not effect the head output, only runtime.” My choice is the 12V over my 18V, reason easier to use, shorter and lighter.
