I listen to a variety of different music, mainly rock and roll and blues, and in the end this is the one band I always come back to because they're the perfect rock band, everything you need and nothing you don't. Ronnie was not only a great singer, he was also a very talented songwriter and one of the best frontmen cause he didn't have to jump around on stage yet had a very strong presence. They had not 1, not 2, but three kickass guitar players that each had their own distinctive style and sound. They had a piano player that was a madman, somewhere between Mozart and Jerry Lee Lewis. Truly great American music!

Steve Gaines is just lights out. Unbelievably great player. One of those guys who had a entirely unique way of making a guitar sound. For me, only a handful of guitar players really make a guitar sound like nobody else. Their sound is so distinct that you know it is them playing within a few notes...instantly, really. Steve is in that category for me. An all-time type of talent, and it is a GOD DAMN shame that he never got to flourish. How I wish for more from him...

Saw Lynryd Skynyrd on July 2, 1977, just 3 months before that fateful day that we lost Ronnie, Steve, Cassie & 3 others 😢
That concert was THE BEST concert I'd ever gone to, Skynyrd rocked that packed Oakland Coliseum!!! Steve, Gary & Allen totally commanded that stage along with Leon on bass, Cassie on backup vocals, all lead by the late GREAT Ronnie Van Zant, there was never any other band out there that could ever compare & never will be!!! I still tear up whenever I see/hear Lynryd Skynyrd...miss them all 😢
    May they all RIP 🙏
    Ronnie Van Zant
    Steve Gaines
    Allen Collins
    Gary Rossington
    Leon Wilkeson
    Cassie Gaines

Great post Cathy ! Thank you. I did not see the Oakland Coliseum show but saw Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1974 and saw them again in 1975 at the Winterland SF show. Marshall Tucker played that night and I think Charlie Daniels Band too. One of best concerts I ever saw. What wonderful memories !

yeah, Allen's intro was nice. Gary's lead, too. but for me...the heart of this song was ALL the fills played by Steve....."one day Skynyrd will be in Steve Gaines shadow."...rvz

And they didn't need 'purty' costumes or 'artsy' backdrops either. Just a total kick-ass jam session by talented musicians playing their own instruments. Too bad there are only a few videos of Ronnie Van Zant's band in action. I've watched these vids dozens of times.

Who can not like LS? They had such a great rhythm and connection. Totally influenced me like no other band. My guitar playing is totally influenced by them, enhanced it as well as singing and song writing. Never got to see them live. Have always felt like one of the guys. They were all so talented.

I remember when I was a youngster in Skynyrd were putting out some really good music. But I was a dead head so I would listen when my friends had them on! But when I got older. I started to listen to the lyrics and the music was great. And I would play them on guitar and listen to them when ever I could. Great Band. Unfortunately most of them died from liquor bottles hitting them in the head in a bad plane crash!!! What a shame man!!!!!!!!
