    When this footage was taken in the Summer of '77, there was NO ONE that could match the intensity of this band. I remember this time oh so well. Watching the guitar soloing between Allen and Steve, then later with Gary, brings a chill up my spine and a tear to my eyes. Ronnie Van Zant was an American Icon- one of the best frontmen to have ever graced a stage- bare feet and all. No one can replace him or these musicians. Those who play as a tribute band today using their name are but a shadow of the real thing. Rock on proud bird!

      Artimus said,.."Lynyrd Skynyrd Begins and ends with Ronnie Van Zant",...and i say the proof is that there has not been one hit since Ronnie Stopped Writing and commanding the band.

      @dwaynejessome1728 Differently great Southern rock. Allmans blues/jazz (then countrier when Dickey took the lead), Skynyrd blues/rock/country. Love them both, but Skynyrd has a grittiness that the Allmans don't.

      It's 2024...I think they we're hitting a huge peak is style music lyrics and just powerful killer solos...
      This song has it all...
      Unbelievable what happened to these band members...
      I heard they ran out of fuel?
      How does that happen?
      Check the damn gauges and make sure it's full ..
      The pilot must have been stoned or whoever he trusted was stoned and didn't do it..
      It could have been a huge miscommunication...
      Cost lives and tragedy and put every band member on another trajectory cut everyone's life short.

      @g47: Saw 'em a week before this performance. Worse seats in the house - outdoors football stadium 70,000 seats & field packed solid. Top row opposite end of the stage (least 150 yards from) but I CAN say - proudly - saw precrash lineup live.

    • @johnstipic1628
      @johnstipic1628 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I know that know one will believe this, but this intro was a question in a classroom one morning. It was a fill in the blank verbally asked and open to the whole class. .
      Whiskey bottles and brand new cars _____________?
      Everyone just had a blank look on their face..
      .....me somewhat hung over, after a pause of silence said: ..oak tree, you're in my way. Everyone except the teacher was even more dumb founded. He said; John gets a Gold Star for that one today... Still, everyone else was speechless and dumb founded...??
      Now you're likely wondering; What subject of class would this be..??
      ...Sunday school. Even I don't know how it fit in other to say that it just happen to be a flash back in the teacher's mind.. Or maybe the Spirit was calling me out for having been partying into the early morning hours not so many hours prior..??

    • @DennisBTV
      @DennisBTV ปีที่แล้ว +10

      The first line actually happened, the whole song is about Gary and the wild life style he lived. He pulled out real fast in a brand new car and hit an oak tree. “The smell of death that surrounds you” he was shooting up that’s why they say “Don’t go sticking those needles in your arm “ and “ one more drink fool would drown you “ yet he was the last man standing.

    • @CoalMiner379
      @CoalMiner379 4 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Couldn't agree more, he is the one the molded that southern rock solo sound long before anyone ever thought of it. Gary is a guitar God in my opinion, if met him several times through meet and greets and hes the exact same man everytime, so humble and appreciative of his fans and never goes without mentioning how he wouldnt be who he is or where he is had it not been for his fallen freebird brothers and sisters. It's truly a shame people bash Gary for keeping on touring when he has all rights to do so, he was a original founding member and his never left the band so he should have all the right in the world to keep his and his brothers music alive until hes ready to retire. Gary Rossington is the main reason I picked up a guitar and learned to play. Which I'm nowhere near close to as good as Gary but I give it my all lol. Gary is a awesome guy and I'll support him and the current lynyrd skynyrd until the day I die.

    Man Steve Gaines just made the band better than it had ever been with his amazing bluesy playing, almost like he completed the line-up of the band, he was the final piece to the puzzle of musical perfection. Goddamn shame what happened.

      Not exactly a tribute band.
      "The surviving band members re-formed in 1987 for a reunion tour with lead vocalist Johnny Van Zant, the younger brother of lead singer and founder Ronnie Van Zant. Lynyrd Skynyrd continues to tour and record with co-founder Gary Rossington, Johnny Van Zant, and guitarist Rickey Medlocke who wrote and recorded with the band from 1971 to 1972 before returning in 1996. Fellow founding member Larry Junstrom along with '70s members Ed King and Artimus Pyle remain active in music but no longer tour or record with the band. Drummer Michael Cartellone has recorded and toured with the band as its core drummer since 1999. Lynyrd Skynyrd was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 13, 2006"
      This is pulled from their Wiki page.

      Medlocke is a scab. He's a great player, I'll give him that, but he acts like he was "there from the beginning" which is bullshit. He was there for a minute, as a fill-in drummer, nothing more. Thinks he's Allen, haha. Not by a long shot.
