This is a little pedantic, but the junk drops in Dr. Mario are not entirely random. Every time pills and junk are done falling, the game checks for clears, first looking for horizontal clears from left to right within each row, starting with the top row. It then checks for vertical clears, top to bottom within each column, starting with the leftmost column. The color of every clear is then stored in an array of 4 bytes so it knows what colors were involved in the combo, and in what order. Packie's combo at 2:07 involves a simultaneous blue-red clear (the blue gets detected first, because it is on the left), followed by a yellow clear. So the ordering of the junk drop from left to right is guaranteed to be blue-red-yellow, which is exactly what we see drop on Crimson's screen. The only variable is where the leftmost junk pill drops (the other junk pieces always drop a fixed distance away from the previous piece, depending on how big the combo was). That part isn't *technically* random but it may as well be. That part is based on what the frame counter is when the junk starts raining down. So f Crimson took an extra frame to drop her pill, the junk drops would have been shifted on column to the left. Another frame after that, and the blue pill would have dropped on the leftmost column, etc. Funnily enough, that means if Packie were playing 1/60th of a second faster at 13:22 , he would have been eliminated from the tournament.
back when my mum was alive, we use to sit and play Dr. Mario together. This was so shocking to me because it's the only game she would play. Later on she loved tetris spheres, but we had played Dr. Mario for sooooo many hours. Just good times.
