I feel the exact same way and I'm an actress. I feel that most of the times supporting roles are way more interesting to reach and way more satisfying for the actor in the end. (sorry for my English :p )

Eponine is pretty much everyone at some point. I love the fact she gave Cosette the note even though she could have destroyed it and told Marius that Cosette didn't love him. Musical/Film Eponine is a true friend.
The real kicker is that Eponine never truly loved Marius. She was in love with an IDEA that he represented. And what's worse is that she KNEW this, but she continued to pursue him because it was the only thing she felt she had to live for. To quote Aragorn from the Lord Of The Rings: "It is but a shadow, and a thought you love...".

It’s like how Gatsby loved Daisy, but he didn’t truly love her for what she completely was, he loved the idea and image of what she was. Same her, I think what they mean is, Eponine didn’t truly love Marius for what he really was. She didn’t get to fully know him and understand him completely, she only loved the image of Marius and what he represented.

Go Cosette and everything, but I honestly think that Cosette was a bit harsh. In the song In My Life Reprise, she literally tells him to forget all his friends and everyone who died and focus on her and their life together when he had just seen all of his friends and Eponine, his childhood BFF, be shot. Eponine saved her life because she wanted him to be happy, and she realised that he would be happy with Cosette, not with her, and he couldn't do that if he was dead. She was sooooo selfless and although Cosette heals him and they're in love and love at first stuff mush mush mush, I think that he should have gone for Eponine...
I think Cosette meant it in a nice way. I think it references to the book when Marius forgot about his friends and the grief because Cosette brought love. The musical just glosses over this event and condenses it into a sentence.
I get what you're saying, but I think the confusion comes from the song in the movie, not the full musical version of the 'In My Life/A Heart Full of Love' reprise. I was confused about this at first too, but in the musical version, Marius actually sings, "Every day I wonder every day , who it was brought me here from the barricade " to which Cosette replies "Don't even think about it Marius, with all the years ahead of us..." etc. I think the miscommunication comes from the fact that the song was trimmed down for the movie, essentially cutting out the context for what Cosette says. (Oops, I rambled, but I hope this kinda clears things up a bit! Cosette wasn't trying to be mean; it was the absence of Marius' lines that leads to people thinking that.)

I have seen this movie in cinema and the moment she started that song, the moment of hearing those lyrics, I could not stop my tears. This was exactly how I felt and how I still feel, months later... the only difference that he does not loves anyone else for so far I know. I'm also on my own and when I feel sad and lonely I listen to this wonderful song, sung by a wonderful voice, and let my tears flow down
This song isn't about unrequited love, it's about the one you only manage to grasp for a second through slipping fingertips, so much more heartbreaking is the false hope of a promise.
I think it's interesting how many here keep saying Marius should choose Éponine over Cosette. I guess it's because she's made beautiful and more romantic/sad in the movies and musical. When you look at it plainly from Marius's point of view (at least in the book), you will see an almost divinely beautiful young lady, well-dressed, clean, good reputation and background (as far as he knows at that moment), well-behaved, respectable, innocent etc. -> admirable On the other hand you have Éponine, a girl of the streets, involved in crime, dubious background/upbringing, dirty, unkempt, unpleasant voice, most likely drunk a lot (since her voice sounds like she had too much alcohol), manipulative, mal-nourished, bad teeth etc. -> pitiable at best. Now imagine yourself as a son of a good family (though they don't have a great relationship). Your upbringing taught you to value the type of woman Cosette is. And while Marius's values changed a bit from what he was taught, the general idea of attractiveness and being a woman people would like to marry would most likely be present in society as a whole. So while I agree that Ponine is a great character (at least in the musical), I definetly understand why Marius would choose Cosette over Ponine.

I love this song so much, and Samantha Barks truly has such an amazing voice. Its hard to decide ; I feel like both of the girls stories are easy to relate too. I grew up in an abusive home and it was a very scary time for me, but like Cossette's story it can get better and you can find happiness. With Eponine its easy to relate to because I think a lot of girls can say that they've been in love or really liked someone who was in love with another or who you knew there was know chance. :/
My ex fell out of love with me after 6 months but didn't say anything until 3 months later, obviously I knew something was wrong but watching him tell me then sleep with someone 3 days after the break up then dating someone new the next week had me understanding this song on a whole nother level. And just so y'all don't start attacking him, we are friends now and I still care about him, just not the same way, he needed her not me. She's better for him than I ever was.
I’ve been in Eponine’s exact position before. So, when I hear her sing it, and when I sing it, I feel a connection, one based on emotion. I’ve since gotten over my friend, and found happiness, but whenever I sing this song, I come near tears, because I know exactly how she feels, and I know that she will never be able to be with Marius. Her live singing in Les Miserables 25th Anniversary Concert (2010) is so much more powerful. I felt the movie stifled her performance of the role, esp the vocals. If you haven't seen the live version, highly recommend!

I used to groom a german Shepherd guide dog companion for a blind man who worked at Disney in Anaheim. (Right down the street) And he would freak out every time I groomed his dog cause he felt lost in the dark without him I guess. two of his coworkers used to bring him and his owner to my pet salon to be bathed or groomed like once a month in Huntington Beach, CA...... and the disney lady who drove them there would always apologize profusely to me for him freaking out on me while I had his dog. ..... i could never figure out why disney bought star wars though.... but from one gimp to another, thank you for cussing me after 20 minutes each time like clockwork. I'm a guy, and I've had feelings for my best friend for the last few months. I really became friends with her because of Les Mis, having watched the 25th Concert in school with her. I invited her to a local performance of the play, she said yes. During this song, I realized that I am Eponine to her Marius. It was both one of the greatest, and one of the saddest moments of my life.
I feel so heartless this was the first time in three years in which I have heard this song and haven't cried. I guess that it's just when it's in the movie is when it tugs at my heartstrings

Her live singing in Les Miserables 25th Anniversary Concert (2010) is so much more powerful. I felt the movie stifled her performance of the role, esp the vocals. If you haven't seen the live version, highly recommend!

speaking of blind people. I used to groom a german Shepherd guide dog companion for a blind man who worked at Disney in Anaheim. (Right down the street) And he would freak out every time I groomed his dog cause he felt lost in the dark without him I guess.
two of his coworkers used to bring him and his owner to my pet salon to be bathed or groomed like once a month in Huntington Beach, CA...... and the disney lady who drove them there would always apologize profusely to me for him freaking out on me while I had his dog.

I'm a guy, and I've had feelings for my best friend for the last few months. I really became friends with her because of Les Mis, having watched the 25th Concert in school with her. I invited her to a local performance of the play, she said yes. During this song, I realized that I am Eponine to her Marius.
It was both one of the greatest, and one of the saddest moments of my life.
I feel so heartless this was the first time in three years in which I have heard this song and haven't cried. I guess that it's just when it's in the movie is when it tugs at my heartstrings
