Have we all forgotten that Les Mis is a story of redemption. Javert is redeemed through the actions of Valjean (to his demise.) Valjean is redeemed by the Bishop and is allowed to follow his true nature. Eponine sacrifices her own happiness to let the man she loves find his. And, even poor Gavroche dies serving a higher purpose. Poetic license gives the writers permission to make Eponine so young, beautiful, and selfless. Which makes her sacrifice so overwhelming. Love them all, don't hate.
Anyone who has experienced unrequited love, which is probably everyone, could reverberate from their heart to the words and music of this truly beautiful song. It's gorgeous and sad and done with such feeling. Just an incredible song! Les Miserables is fantastic. I could do without Master of the House, but that's reality, I guess.
Awww thank you! Eponine is one of my favorite characters in the whole play and I felt Samantha Barks really fit Eponine's image and really brought the character to life!
The perfect song when you're in the Friendzone. I can't say I associate with the song (I more likely associate with I Dreamed a Dream), but this song is amazing. The who MUSICAL is amazing. I've see it on Broadway about 4 times, and when I saw this movie and found out it was live I literally cried all day. Bravo.
She does! On stage she just opens her mouth and sings, while here, you can actually hear the pain and yearning. She was one of my favorite performers in the whole production.
I didn't love the movie as much as everybody else...until she appeared. Then I got pulled in. Every piece she sang was, to me, the best parts of the movie. I am not going to say that this made me cry because that would mean that i have to turn in my Man Card but I will at least admit I was touched...deeply.
I just don't understand when people say they hate Cosette because Marius chose her. It's not her fault. If you are going to blame anyone, blame Marius. And even then, that doesn't really make sense to me either. Sure, he didn't choose Eponine, but what was he supposed to do? Force himself to love her instead of Cosette? I've never read the book (I want to), but in the movie and the musical, Marius and Cosette just seem to have this connection. Maybe a love at first sight sort of thing. And perhaps it's just based on beauty, but I don't know. It always seemed deeper than that to me. In the end of the movie, you can really see that Cosette cares for Marius. Another thing, people always say that Eponine is smarter and braver than Cosette, but I don't understand how that's true when Cosette has never really had a chance to prove her smartness or her bravery. I know she wasn't in the battle, but did she even know about it? And if she did, then I suppose that makes Eponine braver, but really, they're both just kids, so I wouldn't blame her for staying behind (though it makes Eponine's act of bravery that much greater). Plus, what's Cosette going to do out there? She doesn't have experience in that kind of thing. Neither does Eponine (to my knowledge), so does that make her brave or foolish? I would still say brave, and I would say not foolish, because of her incredible loyalty to Marius, but that's one point. Tl;dr - It's not Cosette's or anyone's fault that Marius doesn't love Eponine. But anyway, I love movie Eponine, and I always feel really bad for her.
I see your point; I think everyone is just confused on why Marius never like Eponine from the start. I guess you can't change emotions but wouldn't you choose a childhood friend over someone you met in front of a fence? *Just an opinion*
I suppose Marius sees Eponine as some kind of little sister, evident on the way he treats her. I mean he teases her as a fun way to tell her stuff, just like I do with my little sister and he is devasted when he finds out that Eponine was the one catching the bullet for him to protect him so he could be with Cossette. He even sings her some kind of lullaby so the pain of letting Eponine go is a bit more bareable for him
This is by far my favorite song in the whole movie, it's so haunting and it really shows her characters depth. People say lea's version is better but I honestly don't feel anything listening to her. I'm not saying she's a bad singer/actress I'm saying I don't think eponine was the best character for her.
+Ally Hancock I totally agree with you ...... I feel nothing with lea's version but Samantha's version has me fighting back the tears and puts chills up my spine every time ...... she makes the film for me and her dying scene is bloody fantastic as well I can feel her pain and sorrow in every word ..... BLOODY MAGIC.
I think it's the way the movie was set up. They sing it all live and the orchestra (for lack of a better word) orchestrates the music around their singing. It allows them to control the tempo or take little breaks to really show the emotion of the character, versus having something that is prerecorded and working around that. I think every performance in this movie is better for it.
This song haunts me. Because it's so real. I (obviously) didn't live through the French Revolution, but what I have lived through, and what so many people before me have lived through, is the position Eponine sings about here. I'm in her place right now, and I think it's part of why this film and story transcends so many generations, because although it's historic, elements of it happen even today. Now I'm going to get a bit sad. I'm in love with a boy right now. He is so perfect and sweet and he's always been there for me, when no one else was. But, he's in love with another girl. He has every right to be and I don't hate him for it, and I certainly don't hate the girl he loves. In fact, I think they make a beautiful couple. That's the most relatable and heartbreaking part of this story, that Eponine continues to be as lovely as ever to Marius and Cosette. When he needs help finding Cosette, she helps him. She could have lied, could have denied him the help. Sabotaged his search for Cosette so she could have him instead. But she didn't. And that shows the true power of Eponine's love for Marius. That even though it may pain her, she will still do anything to know he is happy. I've done the same with the boy I love. He wanted advice about the girl he loves, and I told it to him straight. I never thought to sabotage him, I only ever thought with love for him. He is not mine, and he probably never will be. But I love him regardless. I know he would choose her over me in an instant. If we were both in a burning building and he could only save one of us, it would be her. But I've made peace with that. Because I want him to be happy. That's what true love is. Wether it's reciprocated or not, that's how you can tell you truly love someone. When their best interests come before your desires. I will always love this boy, he will always love his girl, and I will always love the character of Eponine. Also, a side note; if I knew Eddie Redmayne personally I'd probably be in love with him too hahaha
samantha sings the song with the best feelin i have ever seen i love the movie sooooo much it is a family favorite it is surly mi fav movie my sister singsm this song every day it is sooooooo amazing ,...... and she looked pretty at the oscars ..... she did sooooo amazing in the play to especially since she was prefoming live at the play.
I'm studying to be Éponine for the play were doing. After many years of convincing were doing Les Mis, and I got a lead. I love Éponine's part and this song.
I don't get it why she was not nominated for an Oscar. Ann Hathaway was wonderful, but Samantha Barks has the extra spark (never mind the divine voice).
I am so in love with one of my friends and he's ALWAYS saying he's alone and keep dating girls who treat him wrong. Yet I'm sitting here like I'M HERE!!!...tis a cold and frustrating place in the friend zone
Yeah. It's even more touching cuz she was the one that brought Marius and Cosette even closer together. Eponine is such a tragic character in the play.
Totally agree with you ;) and a lot of people think that Eponine deserved Marius love because she was poor, pretty and because she "sacrifices" so he can live but this is why I ay they haven´t read the book...because in the movie they didnt show the bad parts of Eponine ...that´s what i ment :) (bad english? it is pretty good :D english is not my native language either ;) i speak spanish hahaha)
We all love samantha. If I were married to her and we got in a fight, I would tell her to sing this song. And I would remember how much I love her. Lol
A good rule of thumb is just add 55 to any degree of celsius and subtract 55 from fahrenheit to move between the two but the actual formulas would be °C x 9/5 + 32 = °F (°F - 32) x 5/9 = °C
Jealousy, love, and the fact that she saw Marius as her hope for a better life. Unfortunately she couldn't cope with Marius being in love with Cosette. Let alone he didn't know of Eponine's feelings. I personally see Eponine as a dying flower that could have been saved.
I agree. I guess its cause a movie so they took a different approach. More visual oriented and more emotion. The more I listen to this the more it grew on my though. I still LOVE the stage productions more though. :)
I feel like crying every time I hear this song..
Me too
It is a sad but beautiful song
Samantha has a lovely voice ...... and brings bucket loads of emotion ..... she also has a very beautiful face.
expect bucket loads of tears too... 😭😭😪😪

So true!

I love Les Miserables.... and especially this haunting song.
So amazing! I can feel the pain in her voice. Beautiful.
Awww thank you! Eponine is one of my favorite characters in the whole play and I felt Samantha Barks really fit Eponine's image and really brought the character to life!
Love this song so much, especially the rain in the background.
I hadnt seen Samantha since they first started filming way back then and to finally see her again like THIS? It was an amazing performance!

Samantha Barks is absolutely beautiful.
Oh and her voice is not bad too. :)

One of the best songs of the movie

She sings so well!!

Wow she is amazing!! I remember watching this in the cinema I cried because it reminds me of my friend xx :,(
i unfortunately was sitting around and then my brain went "hey, what if it was this song but sung by grantaire" and now im just absolutely devastated
