The Mahoyo collab's central conflict turned out to be literally about one guy wanting his underrated and quickly discarded waifu to be number one destroying the world. Wow. It's...very meta.

Kinomi found kindred spirits in Masago and sympathized with her. But she was taken away before they can develop any real relationship. This wasn't a wish made out of love or anything. He just wanted something that the world does not consider valuable, to be recognized by the world, against all odds. It was a wish out of wanting to be contrarian. At least it WAS at first. But when Kinomi found out that the world really DID think of Masago as worthless, he went beyond contrarian to full on rejection. He was angry that in this world, there can really exist a human life absolutely no one values. He thought that no matter how miserable, anyone, anything, must at least be loved by one other person. Imagine when he found out that to the rest of the world, Masago might as well not exist. She might as well not become an idol, not even to her families. Imagine if the world confirmed to your face that your way of living, as a background NPC, is completely worthless. This applies to many other people, not just Kinomi or Masago. Kinomi can't tolerate this. He couldn't accept a world where most human lives are as worthless as background NPCs. That was why he can't genuinely let go of his wish. I'm sure that many other people have the same effectual wish of rejecting this kind of cruel world. Unfortunately Kinomi's way of conceptualizing it was just oddly specific, allowing him to fulfill the requirements of Shiny Star. Kinomi's wish was basically "fuck this world", which is not unique in the entire world. But his way of wording it is unique in the entire world, thanks to Masago. Edit: And of course Tobimaru is the solution. "A world like that is shitty for sure. But lucky you, thr world isn't actually like that. Because I LIKE MASAGO'S SONGS TOO". And just like that, Kinomi's wish to reject the worls falls apart. Not because he stopped rejecting such world, but because such world doesn't exist in the first place. Because they couldn't stop Kinomi's wish from being his "Number One", it couldn't stop being the "Only One". But when Tobi introduced another same wish, he stopped it from being the "Only One" and consequently it also stopped being Kinomi's "Number One" (because he has no more beef with the world that way, so he's no longer preoccupied with making Masago's song to be the number one anymore)
