Excellent video, Nick. My grandparents and my mom would have ridden the Atlantic City Line, or the Camden And Atlantic, from their home in Atlantic City to Philly. They were great railroads. That is one nice locomotive and the whistle sounds are so neat. Side rod failure was very rare and usually didn't involve the rod totally disconnecting. When it did, on the Camel Backs, the side rod could come through the cab on whichever side that failed and cause serious injury or death, which is why they were more publicized. The ride quality obviously was caused by the cab being right over drivers. Either way, they were fast locomotive. I ride between Atlantic City and Philly a number of times a year and it is a fun ride. Some day, they will build a new connection into Philly to shorten the circuitous route through Pennsauken. Either way, an great review and video.

I’m glad that I caught this video when I did. I’m a sucker for these engines. I love the history and the overall design and construction of the locomotive. Awesome review and Whistle Nick!

    Great video Nick!
You're a lucky guy getting your hands on that CNJ Camelback. It took me years to find one, you just don't see them anywhere. and when I did it was a Lionel version. It's a good runner but the whistle doesn't compare to that MTH one, that's outstanding!
I suspect most CNJ Camel models disappear into Jersey guy's basements never to see the light of day again for years!
Just a big more history on Camels for everyone's enjoyment. The CNJ wasn't the only 'road to use Camelbacks, every railroad that hauled anthracite coal used them at one time or another. The Reading, Lehigh Valley, Lackawanna, Ontario & Western, Susquehanna and Erie were others. The Pennsy tried three but didn't like the separation of the engineer and the fireman so they sold them rather quickly to the Long Island RR.
Why did the CNJ keep Camels for so long? They couldn't afford to replace them! After the Great Depression began in 1929 the drop in business caused the CNJ to tighten it's belt and make do with what it had. Post WW2 when there was plenty of money the replacements began but of course they were diesels.
Oh, and the T38 on the side of the cab is the post-WW2 CNJ classification of that particular engine. T= "Ten Wheeler", 38= 38,000 pounds of tractive effort.
Thanks for posting that fun show!

Great video Nick. Did not know that much about the camelback locomotives so thanks for doing that research. As you know I am a Jersey Central fan particularly of the Blue Comet's so now Im also interested in this beauty. You're right, that whistle is awesome! Hope to see you and Dave at a show again soon. Thanks

Reading also ran camelback locomomotives because of burning anthracite coal.

Congrats Nick! Love that whistle! We have an older RailKing Camelback from the 90s, and it doesn't have nearly the detail of this Imerpial model. Very impressed with how much quality you can now get with RailKing.

Great review. And you are right, that whistle is awesome. I’m not a huge fan of camelbacks but the sounds on it are amazing. Great train run too, some really nice shots.

Although the 777 does have an awesome whistle and is one of my favorites the Lionel Conventional Classics 726 Berkshire is still my favorite. You may want to give it a try if you haven’t done so already. Great video!

Fantastic! My Great Great Grandfather drove a C.R.R. camelback Number 679. Can’t find much information about it, are you able to help?
