Gear I’m Taking for Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim in One Day | What I’m Taking, Eating, & Wearing

  • What gear do you take for an epic day hike? My friends and I have been planning a rim-to-rim Grand Canyon trip for over 6 months. The gear for this incredible day hike is critical to ensure that we have an enjoyable hike down one side and back up the other side of the Grand Canyon. My main gear priorities are safety, effectiveness and weight (because it’s going to be a long day!). This is gear I’ve used before and trust. A Grand Canyon rim-to-rim in a day is not the time to be testing new gear. I’ve been training and planning for this epic hike for months, including testing gear on similar hikes to ensure it will perform well on this trip.

      Haha. Thanks man! I think I will be heading back for a multi day trip. I loved doing it in a day, but would also love spending some time exploring down at the bottom. We also had to start super early, so couldn't enjoy the view on our way down the north rim side. You should definitely hit the Grand Canyon. It is absolutely incredible. So many times we were sitting at the north or south rim and I just couldn't help but think it looked like I was looking at a painting. It's honestly breath taking!

    Thanks for the gear video, I want to do this backpacking and maybe stay a night on one side or at the bottom, I can't wait to see the trip video. What pack did you take? Any recommendations on logistics (parking or route) or thing you might have done differently?

    • @DoseofDirt
      @DoseofDirt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You should definitely make the trip! This place is incredible! I realized after I was done recording that I totally forgot to mention the pack! 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ I used my Talon 33. It's comfortable, has plenty of space, but is still small and light. My go-to day pack!
      I've thought about making a separate video about planning, because the logistics can be challenging.
      We got a campsite at Mather campground (south rim) and stayed one night there. The first morning we took a shuttle to the north rim ($90 and 4.5 hours) where we hung out for the day. I reserved 3 nights at the campground, so we just left our tent and the truck there for the one night we were gone. We stayed in one of the cabins on the north rim for one night and got up that morning at 3am to start the hike back to the south rim. We stayed that night at the south rim (they have showers at the campground, which was really nice!) and then left the following morning.
      I really enjoyed the north to south hike. You spend the first 7ish hours coming down Bright Angel Canyon, which was really cool! The canyon walls get closer than I expected and it's just really cool to walk through. But I think that South to North would be just as good.
      If I were to do it again, I think we could shave off the first night at the campground, just leave the truck at the south rim and catch the shuttle that same day, but I also didn't mind having an afternoon/evening to check out the south rim.
      For backpacking, starting on the south side I think making it to Phantom Ranch the first day would be pretty easy (15ish miles, but basically all downhill). From there you can do some day hikes, etc. if you like, and then head back out the other side or go back the way you came. You could then go out in one day (just about 12-13 miles, but obviously steep coming out) or stop at Indian Gardens on your way out the north side. I will say the Bright Angel trail on the north side did not have many water stops, so we were very glad to have the water filter. If you have other questions as you're planning a trip, let me know! Thanks for watching!

    I'm making the same hike next year. What backpack did you take?

    • @DoseofDirt
      @DoseofDirt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Steve! You'll love it! I used the Osprey Talon 33! It was probably more space than I needed, but I always prefer a little extra space vs risking running out of space. Plus that pack is just super comfortable for me. Nice and wide on the hip belt where the pockets are, has a sternum strap, and just fits me really well. I was glad I had the capacity for a lot of water, because there was one HOT stretch where I just about ran out.
      Hope the hike goes well for you! The Grand Canyon is freaking INCREDIBLE!

    • @steveragan3945
      @steveragan3945 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Jeff. Chris Hazzard, aka Hiker Guy, is really high on the Osprey Hikelite 18 as his day pack, and told me it would be great for single day R2R. But 18L seems very small to me for that hike. I've got an Osprey Stratos 24, and even seems a little small unless I can get by with only bottles and no bladder (2 1L bottles in pockets and a .75L bottle hanging from shoulder strap). Thanks again.....great channel!

    • @DoseofDirt
      @DoseofDirt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@steveragan3945 Thanks Steve! Ask 3 hikers and you get 5 different opinions! 😂
      Ya, I like having a little bit more room and also hip belt pockets. I have a hikelite 26 and really don't like it. I did a review of it (as well as my Talon 33) here on TH-cam. I've tried using the hikelite a few times since doing the review and every time I'm just disappointed again. I'm sure it works great for some people, but definitely not for me!
      .
      In deciding what pack to use, I loaded my Talon 33 up with everything I would be taking on R2R on several 10-20 mile hikes just to get the feel of it and see how I liked it. I think that helped a lot to dial things in and feel good about my pack choice!
