Great job! I just missed you! On October 19th I hiked rim to rim by myself, I started on the South rim and finished where you started :). I'm 66 and so glad I completed this awesome adventure! :)
Hi Jack, What a wonderful experience to hear your current voice! Your narration skills are epic. So cool! I am here in Prescott, AZ and sometimes AR. If you are ever in the neighborhood, it would great to meet up.
Thank you for sharing your video. Bring back a beautiful memories. It’s the exactly hike we’d with my husband in 2018 in ☝️ day 16 hours in October. We stayed in north rim lodge and started early 5 am . Next day ,our bodies sore but happy and took the canyon shuttle to get back to the north rim . We will like to do it again with one one night in phantom ranch , so far not look with the lottery. Congratulations 🎈🍾🎉🎊 to all of you.
No permit required for day hikes but for camping along the way, permits are very difficult to get. Not much wildlife viewing but we saw a deer at Havasupai Garden
This is great and congratulations to ur crew. Me and my dad did S. Kaibab down to phantom then up Bright Angel all in a day but in freaking August. Not smart. I consider that a modified rim to rim. Think that’s around 20 miles ish. Cheers!
Ages: Jack (77), Barb (68), Rich (70), Scott (67) roughly. Anything we would do different?: (1) Start earlier, we lollygagged a bit and missed sunrise by 30 minutes, And, (2) not spend as much time at Phantom Ranch - I think we were there over an hour. We kept a good pace yet still managed to take pics and marvel at the scenery but could have started in light and finished before sunset.
Hey there I want to do north rim to bright angel next week Any recommendations where I should park my car so I get it when am done and how to get in to the trailhead north to start the trail Thanks
Well, we went the opposite way. But on the South side, the nearest place to park your car is in lot D, near the backcountry information center. Once you pop up at Bright Angel, it is about a 10 minute walk to the lot and there is a nice food stop along the way at Maswik Lodge. As far as getting to the North rim without a second vehicle, you will have to do more research. To get an early start, you will have to spend the night over there somewhere. There will be some traffic heading into the park early in the morning but not much for hitch hiking. Try calling the Kaibab Lodge on the North Rim. You might find a bus to take you there and then they will give you a ride to the TH early in the morning. Have fun and if you pull it off, add a comment here!
Serious training at least 2 months before the hike. Stairmaster: work up to 1 hour at level 7, which is a steady climbing pace ( not too fast), 3x per week. Treadmill good too at max incline (15) and pace of 2-2.5 mph, for an hour 2-3 times per week. Add in real hikes with distance like 12, 15, 20 miles once per week. Try to do 20 miles
Don't over analyze the training routines, just do what you can- but feel confident you can do 23 miles with 4,000 vertical, maybe ona hot day. Best of luck...Enjoy!
You can do all the time on the stair machine you want but it won’t do anything to prepare your knees for the hike down. Going up is a mental game, going down is when you can damage your legs. I’ve hiked the canyon 10 times in last 6 years and going down is the time I’m concerned. If you want to train put 30 lbs on your back and go up and down actual stairs.

Fantastic video of an impressive accomplishment for a quartet of "auld fartes!" Did you have to get a permit? See any wildlife along the hike?

@@jandbpct Thanx Jack & Barb!

Cool video... as always!
Awesome, seems like you did it without any major issues. Anything you would do different? What are your ages?
Thanks

@@jandbpct you are a legend for getting back your me
Thank you and will do
Oops, brain drain.. We went North to South but had two cars, not "the opposite way"
Can you share some details about your training. How much time on the stair master and treadmills and how many days a week?
Serious training at least 2 months before the hike. Stairmaster: work up to 1 hour at level 7, which is a steady climbing pace ( not too fast), 3x per week. Treadmill good too at max incline (15) and pace of 2-2.5 mph, for an hour 2-3 times per week. Add in real hikes with distance like 12, 15, 20 miles once per week. Try to do 20 miles
more: with altitude up and down of 4,000 ft each way, laps on shorter routes can work for this.
You should time the 20 mile hike for about a week before the R2R. And stay hydrated along with electrolytes for all distance work
Don't over analyze the training routines, just do what you can- but feel confident you can do 23 miles with 4,000 vertical, maybe ona hot day. Best of luck...Enjoy!
