How to Train for Rim to Rim Hike 1 Day Grand Canyon - 4 Methods, 4 Results North Kaibab Bright Angel

  • Of the five million + annual visitors to the Grand Canyon less than 1% of them will dare to embark on this journey to explore the depths of the canyon below. Of those who try, approximately 250 will need to be rescued each year. So, how can one properly train for a successful journey?
According to the National Park Services website it is NOT recommended to try hiking the Grand Canyon from rim to rim in one day. Ideally, those wanting to embark on the hike will camp in the base of the canyon at Bright Angel Campground, Cottonwood Campground, or stay at Phantom Ranch. Those staying overnight will need to acquire the necessary permit and of course lodging reservations well in advance.
My sister wanted to hike this for her 50th birthday and somehow (because I have severe FOMO and also thought it would make an amazing video) I agreed to go along on the journey. She has run marathons and loves to push the limits of what she can do. I, on the other hand, enjoy a nice six mile hike with dinner and drinks afterwards. Or, if I really need a thrill I’ll just join the locals and jump off our nearby 50 foot bridge into the river below. (She is a firm NO on that)
So, why did we go against all professional recommendations and hike from rim to rim in one day? Apparently, because she knew she could do it. That grit, paired with responsible training and preparation helped us succeed. Failure wasn’t an option….mostly because rumor has it that a rescue from the Grand Canyon comes with a 15K bill. I didn’t know how to verify or deny this rumore, but I knew it was a bit pricey for my pockets.
The birthday trip dream team consisted of 4 of us ladies between the ages of 40-50. This video is a detailed outline of what each of us did to train, what if anything we would do differently, and how we felt the training helped throughout the hike. Each of us began our training 2-3 months out from the big day.

I always think a little a lot is better than a lot a little. I do 1 hour in the gym four days a week, taking Wednesday's off I do a combination of jogging on the treadmill, and various weight machines. At 75, I found this minimal exercise regime made a big difference in the reduction of arthritis pain.

I did the R2R last year in September and the heat was killer. It was 110 in the shade at Cottonwood so we napped for four hours on the bench! Once the sun went down, it was a whole new game up the North Rim. 💜💜💜 Good advice with the heat.

That is a great accomplishment and it is a fun hike, although hard. The one thing I can say for anyone training for this is do all you can to strengthen your quads, especially via eccentric contractions as you do a lot of them in a hike like this. Al variety of lunges and squats will work your quads and glutes to get them in shape for this, and you will come out a lot less sore at the end.

Awesome series on your R2R experience! I turned 40 last week and planned a last minute R2R trip on a whim. I ended up canceling the flight because it was too rushed and I didn't feel I was trained enough. BUT...I do plan on doing this in 1 day in spring '24. So thanks for the great videos!!!

I have moved and can now see a mountain outside my window every day. I was pretty quick to decide I HAD to climb it. The hike is 6 hours and about 6000ft up. Definitely ranked strenuous and for someone who's never hiked more than 2 hours, a stretch. I wanna start training for it with smaller hikes in the area. Can't wait to see my first mountain peak!
P.s. you ladies are OP!! I can't image doing even half your training regimes

@@RadiantRealty : Baby's mom and dad came down with Covid on the 19th. I had a sinus infection that has dropped into bronchitis. I was exposed to them, but I tested negative. Covid was far easier for me than this double whammy.
So, no, I didn't get to spend Christmas with baby. Wah... she is 3 mos old already, Janet!
Mom and dad had it fairly mild. Daddy lost taste and smell completely, mommy lost some taste, had a very low fever one day...both a little achy. Lil' Mermaid is absolutely healthy being exclusively breast fed. All mom's antibodies.
My son and his fiancee' from Florida arrived the morning of the 19th, my other son started losing taste that night.
Those two had it in October, so they're immune.
Christmas has been done in installments, the wrap-up today with my daughter's fiancee' and his four children arriving for the next ten days.
I'm in my Gramma cave feeling like a NyQuil commercial...lol.
Focusing on the good moments we had together, and ready to sleep a day.
Will have to call my doc and do a tele-med. I need to get well as I'm on "standby" for pacemaker surgery. Covid is intense here, all surgeries have been cancelled over a month.

Hey Ron, my sister's husband came along as our driver. So nice. After dropping us off at the North Rim he drove around to the South Rim to pick us up that evening. Be sure to research the shuttles well. I think you need advanced reservations to go from the North to the South because some people were stranded at the North Rim when we were there the night before. Employees were telling us it happens all the time. :o
