Angel Leucistic Red Tailed Hawk ~ Angel Brings In Two Young Blue Jays! 5.24.23

  • Today Angel brings to the nest two young Blue Jays. The first Blue Jay is a fledgling and the second Blue Jay is even younger & still has some pin feathers growing on its wings so not fully fledged yet. A bird with pin feathers on its wings is not capable of full flight yet but could flutter to the ground if it fell out of the nest. Blue Jays are in the corvidae like crows and magpies. They are territorial and both the male and female build the nest & raise their young. Blue Jays tend to lay 3-6 eggs per clutch. They fledge early at 17-21 days after hatching.
We have seen Angel be pestered by the blue jays every day but they are just defending their territory and their young which they perceive as being threatened by the hawk family. I would hope that no one feels that Angel got revenge by catching these two young blue jays as it is all about survival and feeding her chick and not about payback or revenge. Young hawks are also predated by other raptors as we have seen (mostly by owls and eagles). Tom also brought in young meadowlarks today as well. This is the circle of life in nature as it unfolds each day. Thank you for watching!

Now you can see why they've been so relentless in their dive bombings and it's completely understandable

Yes this is the reason Greg. Sad to see these young blue jays lose their lives but this why the parents are so relentless in protecting their territory. They are trying to get the hawks to leave the only way they know how (dive bombing them)

@@ladyhawk Doesn't the relentless dive bombing just bring more unwanted attention to their nest? I've seen them dive bomb stray cats, then watch the cats follow those parents back to the nest and eventually make it up there. We've got blue jays that nest in the field next to my house and this cycle happens every year. Cats target them after getting dive bombed so I'm curious as to why raptures wouldn't also follow the parents back. The blue jays even dive bomb my dogs who find it hilarious.

I would think if they would have stayed out of ANGELS way , she would have let them alone , but blues , just persisted with the attack constantly ,MOM got sick of it , now her chick is getting bigger and might get knocked out by blue jays , chick can't handle a hit like that, she or he ,might lose its balance ,it would be dangerous for chick

I'm amazed how fast hawklett is growing! It looks comfy like sitting in a chair.

Wowwwwww gg again with the CROPZILLA from our lil RASCAL! I don’t think I’ve seen a baby put down food like this. Although, hawks are known to eat constantly it seems!

Poor birdies. Thas nature I guess. Humans are part of the circle of life and food chain too and some people seem to forget this. Sure there are rogue humans, as there is in the animal kingdom but the majority are just going about their day and surviving.

This is why blue jays attack hawks. Because the nestlings and fledglings are occasionally prey. Blue jays would have eaten the hawk eggs if given the opportunity.
I watched a red tailed hawk systematically plunder pigeons' nests and carry the squabs off to feed its own babies.

Let’s hope the Jays have other chicks that survived since they often have 3 or more (I learned that from Lady Hawk’s description area). Nature being nature

Well, it's interesting to be pestered by your food one day day, then pulling the meat off it's bones the next day. It's like a constant reassurance that food is plentiful for the family. They are not seeing the food they need to survive being priced out of their budget.
It's a simple life without constant bills or food insecurity. But all the freedom in their lives, it is not always easy.
The blue jays were one of my favorite backyard birds to watch enjoy my bird feeders. They would come ask for peanuts which I would put on a specific tree branch for them after they asked. Otherwise the nuisance squirrels would destroy the feeders and greedily eat all the peanuts.
Now I just keep in mind that a noisy neighborhood of songbirds is a rich food source for raptors to feed their families.

Blue jays would have more success raising their young if they kept a better watch on their own nest. Imagine the energy these guys burn constantly attacking when they could be feeding/guarding their own babies. I've seen tons of blue jay babies eaten by predators and I know some of those predators followed the parents back.

That's why the blue jays have been flushing Angel and the baby. They are protecting their babies too. It's sad that their babies died young. It's sad but yes it's also circles of lives.....

    • @CenturianEagle
      @CenturianEagle ปีที่แล้ว +12

Yeah… very unfortunate for the bluejays that their babies they’ve been protecting got snagged up, but as you said it’s the circle of life… it just hit me a bit because the cardinals I’ve been feeding in my backyard had a little fledgling (they definitely had more than one chick I’m sure, but those didn’t make it to fledge probably as it is hard for smaller species of birds to make it.) but anyway there was one cute little fledgling I was seeing and then recently I stopped seeing it. So sad, every year though my backyard cardinal buddies have two broods, and the second brood which is around august- they always seem to make it just fine, sometimes they’ll have three successful chicks all make it to fledge and then go out on their own, but the spring brood for some reason they just always have trouble, I’ve never seen them have success with the spring brood. You should see these little ones though they’re so cute, chubby little cardinal babies that have a crest and everything. Sorry for the long comment!

I love Blue Jay's. All little birds do this - especially when their young are helpless on the ground learning to fly - easy dinner for Hawk's unfortunately. I hope they weren't still alive when she brought them to the nest.

It's heartbreaking to see such beautiful creatures, especially babies, die and get eaten. I wish animals did not have to hunt and kill other animals to survive, but that is the way nature works on our planet for so many animals. I hope when they get killed by their predators, they die instantly or very quickly. I feel sad for the Blue Jays' parents, especially the one who watched Angel feed her baby to the hawk baby. Nature is beautiful, but also so cruel.

Yes, I too find it especially sad with the bluejay parents right there 😢 I always mourn the life that is lost but also give thanks for the nourishment that life provided. Tis the circle of life on earth, but I also believe that this life is but a flicker after all, and that every creature that has lost it's life here has gained a place in heaven where there will be no more pain and suffering for them, and one day, when it is all over, the same for all of God's creatures and children 🙏💕
