I hope Angel keeps close to her baby, Tom is not showing natural dad instincts. I think he's not mature enough to raise little ones. I'm praying he sticks to just providing food. And Angel does her best. Prayers to this little hawklet. 🙏
He is a mature male. They’ve been together last year and bonded but never mated cuz he wasn’t yet. This is completely normal for first time dads. First time parents are never perfect at first. They make mistakes and they get easily confused about how to go about certain things. With time and experience he’ll get better. He is showing normal parental instincts here. Brooding and preening. He’s being a bit rough with the preening, but he’ll have to learn with time to be more gentle. Compared to the first chick this is a good sign.
@@kips8156 Thank God when sub adult Shadow showed up in Big Bear Valley/Lake in summer of 2019, he was smitten with Jackie. Although her mate, Mr. B, their surviving fledgling Stormy and her all tried to run him off, but he wouldn't budge! That following winter, they had 2 Eaglets and he had great innate Papa Instincts, and what he didn't know, Jackie taught him!
This is completely normal behavior from a first time dad. He wants to care for it but he’s confused on how to go about it. You can tell he’s not wanting to hurt the baby. He had its foot on it and quickly moved it off so he didn’t hurt it. Being a parent to a chick is new to him and certainly a new learning experience. He’s very curious about it, wants to brood and preen the baby, but his way of preening is rough and needs to be gentle with the little one. It’s also completely normal that he killed his first chick mistaking it for food or an intruder. He’s been used to sitting on the eggs and incubating them when Angels gone but having a chick in the nest is complete different. He was never properly introduced to the first, what I mean is that Angel should have waited for Tom to come to the nest. She should stand up and let Tom see the chick under her. That’d way it click that he’s suppose to care for it. Instead he got to the nest to see no Angel and a mysterious chick that got into the nest. Then he put the body off to the side of the nest. Angel came back in a tizzy. They both left the nest, Tom came back and carefully picked up the chick and put it under him to warm it up. Somewhere in between, Angel in a tizzy and him coming back to warm up the chick, it clicked that it was meant to be there and wasn’t food or an intruder. With the second chick hatched, they weren’t properly introduced again, but this time he doesn’t kill the chick. How I see it he doesn’t know how to move the baby into a spot to brood, so he carefully is moving it around with his feet. He gets it to a spot he likes and sits down on it to brood. Moves a bit and starts to preen it. He probably mixes up preening cuz he has long adult feathers while the chick has downy feathers that shouldn’t be pulled on like that. Then Angel comes back in yelling most likely to get off his butt and go find food for once. He does, he finds two baby possums. He stuck around for the first feeding to watch Angel feed their chick and was really focused on it. Left and brought back the second possum. He’s already been alone with the second chick twice. The second time he’s only stared at it, walked around it and left. This was before he brought the food back. He still has a lot to learn but he’s not doing too bad with this baby, he’ll be one heck of a provider though! Lol that’s mostly all what happened yesterday, besides the first chick part.
I think he would have killed this one too if Angel hadn’t gotten back in time. Just don’t say anything bad about Tom in the live chat because the moderators will freak out and give you a “time out”. They don’t tolerate the slightest bit of criticism.
I’m positive the way he picked up that baby would’ve broke it’s neck again if Angel didn’t come back which is unbelievable. SMH. I’m thinking the 2nd time he came back where he saw the baby but took off right away and flew out was when he put two and two together because he went hunting and brought back prey twice after that.
I agree. I think he would’ve eventually killed it if Angel hadn’t shown up. Today Tom wasn’t around at all which is good except for the fact he’s not bringing food back to the nest. Angels been having to do it all. I’m just glad she caught that groundhog a few hours ago, it had been 36 hours without a meal for the eyas. 😢
