It's insane to think that Bol was basically running a training lap in the semi's and still won, while the girl in 5th place (I think?) was literally pushing so hard she crashed when she crossed the line.
That's not insane, it's normal. Semis are always full of people doing the very least to get into the finals with the position they want, and others needing to give their all in hopes of a long shot at getting into the finals
All comes down to fitness.
Why doesn't lieke give hurdles a shot tho. She seems strong enough for it?

The fact that she is slightly taller than 6 feet makes these indoor performances on banked boards even more incredible. I expected her to improve her hurdles times (which she did outdoors last year) but it's her flat 400m speed that is so impressive.

Klaver & Holmes are also tall +6 feet athletes.
I am a noob ( i really am) but look how she runs the last meters on this 400 flat, and how that can improve the speed after the last hurdle (flat)
How does the bank affect different height athletes?
At fast running speeds a lower center of gravity makes for less effort needed because of gforces being applied to a taller vs shorter athlete on banked inclined planes.
Watching Femke run is pure joy....her form is flawless .....what's not to like ..

Congrats to Femke on a new 49.17 WR, well done to Klaver 50.16 for holding on for a Dutch 1-2, to Holmes for a 50.24 PB & also Laviai Nielsen 50.89 PB for finally breaking 51s for #5 on the British all-time indoor list (up from #17 at the start of the season). Looking forward to the 4x4!

Would then like to see her go for it in the flat 400m in '25 & try to win WC 400m Gold in Tokyo, want to see what she can really do in the flat 400m outdoors when she's solely focused on it! Would like to see Klaver improve on her outdoor 49.81 PB by running sub 49.5s consistently this yr & I like that a couple of the other NED women improved their PBs this indoor season which bodes well for their Relay Teams this yr.

klaver was more enthusiastic for bol winning than she herself.
She said afterwards on Dutch tv she was so happy that she became second and wanted to share that with Femke. So she was especially happy for her self
Klaver was slower in her run but faster than Bol in realising that her friend didn't only win but also took the new WR. That explains the extra happiness 😊

Klaver’s time would place her 3rd in the 2023 Outdoor Championship in Budapest where she finished 6th. Since indoor tracks are slower, her performance
is a great achievement.
Femke said several times that she will not contest the 400 flat outdoors. She will be part of some relay teams but not the individual. So, in Paris she will run the 400 Hurdles.

Her upper body and his face is relaxed. It does not burn energy unnecessarily for muscles that do not participate in propulsion. For an anaerobic discipline, this is perhaps an advantage that one would not suspect.

My only riposte would be Allyson Felix who looked so smooth for a sprinter. But yeah, Bol is amazing and I love how she manages to hold the relaxed form right through the line.

Would be a little surprised if more than one of Bol & Klaver runs the 4x4 semi, think NED will try to qualify for the Final w/o Bol having to run the semi & then bring her in for the Final.

I'm a massive Sydney fan .... but I have to admit for the Flat 400m, I can see Bol as the athlete to actually challenge that "unbreakable WR" outdoors.
The problem.... she's a Diehard Hurdler and shoots down any talk about her passing on the Hurdles to focus 100% on the Flat. 😣😣
I actually think with 400m training and solely focusing on the Flat... she could be World Champion... and maybe even approach the WR??
Obviously Sydney will be as close to unbeatable also, so that 400m showdown would be EPIC for fans.

With that speed indoors, Femke can obviously run sub 49 secs outdoors and probably below 48.5 secs. If Sydney can match that then over the next couple of season the unbreakable (and probably drug fuelled) outdoor WR will be in serious danger.
Agree first both have to break 48.5s on flat 400m. And who knows in few years Femke, Sydney, Nasser, Paulino or Britton Wilson are prospects to close the gap to huge 47.6 WR.

I saw Femke's workout and training , huge respect I just love her and Caitlin Clark . When I watch Femke run its like poetry in motion the only other athlete that made me feel that was Michael Jordan , he dominated but with such style and grace .

im amazed every time i watch Bol run, not that she wins or that she runs fast but that she wins and runs so fast while making it look so effortless, most athletes even female athletes have some muscle definition, whether its large powerful thighs or a toned 6 pack or sturdy shoulders, but then theres Bol who is slender with girl next door looking muscles, iv no idea if they have tried weight training in her regimen or not but whatever theyre doing is working for her in spades and long may it continue
she does weight training on teusdays and fridays.
That is deceptive. Her legs look relatively thin because they are so long, but she has a lot of powerfull and well defined muscles in those thighs, and she is VERY strong. She can clean & jerk's 1.5 times her bodyweight. (97.5 kg, with a body weight of 65 kg) That is expert level...

In the early 2010’s daughter of friends of mine was in athletics in a Dutch club. The trainer there was so focused on delivering the next champions, it took away the fun for the kids and they quit. It’s nice to see the result of this regime, but I strongly believe it needs to be fun for the younger kids and not fanatically driven till the fun is gone. Just my opinion
So you have from hearsay that one kid once in 2010 had a bad experience at a local athletics club in the Netherlands.
It's a shame if that happened to that kid of course, but I don't think that is the case in 99% of athletics clubs in the Netherlands (I've been to quite a few).
I totally agree that sports should be fun for kids and to me Femke Bol is the embodiment of that as she has so much fun and love for the sport.
I’ve coached track and field athletes for close to half a century. Overtraining is fairly common. A lot of athletes and coaches are in denial about what the appropriate amount of training and rest are. @@_MicZ_

I think that the reason she's faster at the indoor 400 than the outdoor is that she starts faster indoors, so she can cut in front of Klaver, or whoever the fast starters are.

@@theeagelsband that has nothing to do with it. There have always been banked tracks and people have always run indoors slower than outdoors.
Indoor is about 2% to 4% slower than outdoor (because you have more and sharper corners). The only reason Femke Bol has a sharper time indoor is that never runs 400 m flat outdoor. In the outdoor season she hurdles... However if we translate her recent performance on the indoor to the equivalent performance outdoor, we can safely say that she has the potential to run low 48's or even 47's on the outdoor 400 m flat.
She is faster indoors because she focuses only on 400mh in the outdoor season. She ran 49.44 outdoor in 2022 when her best indoor was 50.30

Or stated differently: the old indoor record was held by Jarmila Kratochvilova with 49.59. That is to say that Femke Bol improved by 0.42 on that. But Kratochvilova also had an outdoor PB of 47.99. And if Femke could improve so much on Kratochvilova indoor there is not reason to think that she could not do that outdoor. So I think you can see where this goes.... (you can do the Math) Of course she first needs to do it. But the problem with Femke is that she never runs flat 400's outdoors because in the outdoor season she hurdles...

I like Femke Bol just like everybody else. She likes the indoor circuit fine, and the United States or our best athletes do not want to compete in the indoor season. I'm waiting for the outdoor season to see what she brings. Because Sydney, among Delilah, Mohammed, and not to mention the new coming runners, will have to compete with real talent. So enjoy the victory, and I do like her as a runner. She's smooth; she glides. Sydney does the same when she's running, but I can't wait for this big match, so she better enjoy it while she can. I also find it funny that the world record for this is a second and a half slower than the outdoor 400 world record and people seem to think that McLaughlin, Paulinho, Miller-Uibo and Bol would be close or at least Bol being close to them. Bol maybe close to a win (not that WR) in the hurdles if McLaughlin isn't running. It is way faster than I'd be able to run. I don't know if I could run 300m that fast but lets not pretend there is a contest at the moment.
🤣🤣Please learn your FACTS about indoor vs outdoor times? Why do you think there are TWO separate WR's? Indoor (on a 200m track) is harder than outdoor because indoor the athletes have to run 4 sharp and banked bends, instead of the 2 wider bends on an outdoor 400m track. Therefore the times indoor are always about 2% to 4% slower than outdoor. Which means that Bol's 49.17 WR equates to something between 48.20 and 47.28 (!) on an outdoor track... Or, stated differently: Bol improved on the previous holder of the WR, Jarmila Kratochvilova, by a whopping 0.42 seconds. But Jarmila Kratochvilova had an outdoor PB of 47.99 (which was also the Outdoor / general WR before Marita Koch ran the famous 47.60) .... And given that Bol improved on Kratochvilova's indoor WR, there is no reason why she couldn´t do that on the outdoor track too. And 47.99 - 0.42 = .... Right. Now compare that to the PB's of Paulinho and McLaughlin, 48.76 and 48.74, which are both 1.16 and 1.14 ABOVE the 400 m Outdoor WR.... So Bol is NOT ONLY CLOSE to Paulinho, Miller Uibo and McLaughlin, but you could even say that relatively she is already FASTER.
