I don't think most people realize just how dominant this is! I most meets he is figuratively "lapping the field". Most meets there isn't even another vaulter clearing 6.00m and he's able to clear 25cm(about 1 foot for us in the US) or over 3% higher than anyone else. That would be like someone in the 100m winning with a 9.6 while second place got a 9.9. Or in a 400m someone winning with 43 flat and winning by a second and a half every race!
It's just ridiculous how much better he is than any other vaulter ever!

More problematic is that he is also just gaming the meet award system .......as he is not going to max out on the WR, but instead holds back so that he can break the WR again at another meet that awards those that break a WR at their meet.........these meet sponsors for leagues need to rethink how to award prize money when it comes to setting WRs.........so that it discourages this kind of hold back from maxing out........the reason I see this as a problem in my humble opinion is what if this guy gets seriously hurt or sick at some point? Then we will never really know just how high this guy could have pushed himself and what the WR could have really been under his reign...........anyway, thats my take....perhaps the prize money should be awarded by how much your break the record by...meaning the higher percentage you beat the old record by the higher the prize money goes........just a thought.......

I kinda completely agree with you but it is important to understand that we are here in a really weird position. Firstly because Mondo knows 9 times out of 10 that I will only compete against himself so the spectator knows also after the first jump. To that extent I can do wathever he wants, try to jump high or juste secure the and we can’t blame him for that. Secondly and more importantly, this is the only discipline where the athletes can choose which record he wants to break, it’s not even part of the competition, it becomes a show. Duplantis can do that and almost try to break a wr at every important meeting and he is the only one… to conclude, you can’t change the rules just for the goat of a specific discipline

watched the swedish broadcast and in the interview, what struck me was the fact that he was so casual about it, almost like he didn't really expect to break the record so easily. the clearance height was 6.29 and he made it look like it was nothing.

@@kurtfrancis4621 I think much longer than that -of course not saying never. Mens long jump, when will that be broken you think (only broken once(or did Carl Lewis so it too?) since 68 in approved conditions)?, womens long jump, 400m for ladies? Or mens high jump or the triple jump? 800m for ladies or ladies high jump? Ladies 100m , 200m.. Ladies decathlon.. mens hammer.. It is like 30 years or more for all of them I think and little prospects of those records being broken still. It can last very long. It takes an extreme talent (someone like Bubka coming along again) and Mondo is at least as good as the ones holding those records with respect to the competition at the time -pushing the boundarys considerably. But future will tell, the discus record was broken recently-in extreme conditions but still.. new pole material is a factor.

I hope he continues to rake in the paychecks whilst keeping the WR table full with his name! In the grand scheme of things with the money involved in larger franchise sports and the commercial revenue associated, whatever he's getting I'm sure is a drop in the ocean and let's face it this is a risky risky discipline, like with these other high-paying sports he's millimetres away from a life changing injury - if he's able to cash in, glad he's doing so. And this is a discipline he won't be able to do into his 30's (although wouldn't be surprising - he owns pole vault and is just perfection on his successful attempts). I'm in disbelief watching him vault the height of my home every time I watch any clip of him above 6m.

I congratulated him and said he would do great things in the future. He said with great enthusiasm that his ultimate goal was to win gold at the Olympics some day. I said it looked to me like he would be the guy to take down Bubka's world record - he just beamed from ear to ear and said that was too amazing to even dream about! Well, Renaud beat him to Bubka's record and it took 6 years for Mondo to surpass Renaud's amazing jump - but from that day onward the rest of the field has just been happy to share the runway with such an amazing athlete!

Really sorry to hear that, always a shame when you can't do what you are good at anymore - and as I echoed in a previous message hope Mondo keeps cashing in as much as he can with his WR attempts (hope people aren't criticising his small WR increments) - he's doing the right thing - this is a very risky discipline, only millimetres away or a split second miscalculation away from a life changing injury, if not a career-ending injury. The guy is phenomenal. This discipline I feel gets overlooked a bit as it doesn't have that glitz of other disciplines but it's very very technical and needs a lot of attributes and timing. Let’s be real - if he were a Jamaican sprinter or an American swimmer - he be getting in top 10 all time in the history athletes lists. He has to be as good at his discipline as Bolt & Phelps were….. but it’s pole vault. Most people haven’t even heard of him. Heights that others fight each other over for 2nd place - he clears like it’s a warmup. I can barely think of something more difficult than the pole vault. I can run very slowly. I can swim very slowly. I can throw a shot put not far. There's been some advances in pole technology in terms of strength to weight ratios, but essentially Mondo is vaulting on the same UCS fiberglass poles as Bubka (a lot of modern vaulters now use ones made of carbon fiber which has really been the biggest breakthrough in pole tech since the 2000s). However I think pole vaulting is a sport that could advance rapidly because of technological improvements.
