At the prime of his career, once he got the ball you can notice 3-4 players tried to close him down. His acceleration, dribbling, feint and shooting(with both legs) was godly. The real Ronaldo.
In Brazil, we don't call him Ronaldo, we just call him 'O Fenomeno', 'The Phenomenon'. He truly was a phenom out there on the field. So glad that I got to see him, and remember his great skills in that 2002 World Cup. Incredible talent... like a bolt of lightning

He clearly stepped up in the big games. But yeah, agreed that his record in the leagues he played in aren't incredible.

I remember when he was in his prime, he was unbelievable, there was no youtube or anything like that so when you had the chance to watch a game featuring Ronaldo you almost didn't want to blink because you knew you were watching something special. He never played for a team that I supported so I still remember that feeling of jealousy for not having a player that could control and touch the ball the way he did. He would just glide through the field and the ball would listen to his every command.
He also never played for a team that won major trophies.
Best ever player for me. I remember the first time I watched him in Confed 1997 game against Czech Republic. My parents were just talking about him and I was really curious to see this player who had a similar name to mine. I was only 8 years old and was blown away. I liked soccer but after I watched this guy, I started loving it and following it. I even said I wanted to play for Brazil even though I am not from there. It's always inspirational to see how he overcame his injuries.

I was lucky to have my teenage life in the 90's, where I could watched R9 at his prime. I have never seen a player like him, he's above everyone else to this day.
⚽ football became thrilling when R9 was playing. He was a pure class and amazing to watch. Such a humble character but so devastating for any defence and feared by all goalkeepers.. I watch his videos whenever I feel bore and it gives me so much joy 😎🤠😄😘.. #R9_bestever!
He was adept at both styles of dribbling - going straight in a line beating defenders (gambeta) and doing tricks with the ball (GINGA). Simply the greatest dribbler of the ball ever even with a dodgy knee and weight issues.

I remember in 1998, brazil vs denmark, a world cup match. Denmark destroyed my country Nigeria in the previous round and i hated them (on pure footballing level) for that. Then they met RONALDO and Brazil in the quarters. That match will live forever in my memory. Ronaldo played like an angry beast against Denmark. His touches, dribbling, strength and 2 assists were truly phenomenon in that match. After that game, i rated him above every humans from any profession in the world. He is truly a PHENOMENON.
We will never see someone with half of his skills again in this planet.

There is a reason why legends like maurinho, Zlatan, Zidane, Kaka, Maldini, Nesta, canavaro, Messi etc called him the greatest to play the game. Messi & cr7 may have more goals than r9 even neymar ,aguaro, Suarez & lawandoski will surely pass r9 goal tally at the end of their career but nobody has as much impact on football as r9 had. Both players have the same athleticism, speed and creativity; perhaps Ronaldo has fancier tricks and dribbles, while Pele can use the movements of his opposition a bit better to his advantage. But then again, Ronaldo is faster then Pele. Overal, I think they are a tie, and only after those two comes Maradona.

His play was pure and clean football.No dirty pushing or physical obstruction. I have never seen him loosing temper or angry even while his opponents resorted to commit physical fouls.Watching him play was like listening to great melodious tune or song.Indeed sheer delight and mesmerizing. What an artistry and magical quality he exhibited. While writing those magical movements of his play are still dancing before my eyes.
R9 is the best ever. In the 90's I use to watch CNN "world sport special" just 2 see his highlights in South Africa.

I remember watching him in the Brazilian league in 1993, at just 16, and the stuff he did there was beyond insane. He was absolutely dominant from the get-go. It was like he was playing against kindergarten kids, yet he was just a 16 year-old rookie! I really wished he had played at least one game in the 1994 world cup.

Still after his two knees operations,he won a W Cup and was great playing for Real Madrid. He did accomplished more than any player after his injuries. Any other would quit the game after that second tragedy game when his knee almost popped out. Still remember as if was today,was his first game after recovering from the first big one. I was 100% sure he would never play again,he came back and won the W Cup.

As far as I know, R9 made me love football and I'm sure he inspired many other kids including Zlatan who acknowledged. I dont remember him faking for a penalty or free kick. Ronaldo R9 was the greatest striker ever. He was truly the El Fenomeno. A magnificent beast who defied the greatest defenders of all time like they were props. That knee injury cut short his career and lost 3 years in prime. Who knows how many records he would have established!!! In my humble opinion, he is right up there with King Pele in terms of changing the game forever. Thank you, El Fenomeno. Today's kids have no idea about you.
