I always thought it would be rad if Frieza was actually killed by Piccolo on Namek after fusing with Nail. A twist in the story that Frieza was more concerned with the Saiyans and didn't spare a thought for the natives he butchered to get the Dragon Balls, only for that to be his undoing. Then his father emerges from the shadows to be the antagonist that ends up fulfilling the Super Saiyan legend.
From wanting to kill Goku out of revenge for his father, to saving a random boy and his dog from the Earth exploding, as well as willingly dying with the Planet so the Black Star Dragon Balls cannot be used again, Piccolo is really one of the best examples of a villain becoming a hero.
I just realized that Piccolo holding down Cell Max correlates... or was probably redemption for him having to kill Raditz alongside Goku when he had to hold him down.

To this day, I think Piccolo should have been Goku's sideman instead of Vegeta. Piccolo is just more interesting and if Toriyama had allowed him to keep pace with the Saiyans in the later parts of Z, Piccolo would still undoubtably be relevant.
Given Piccolo is Toriyamas favorite character, it baffles me he didn't do like a mini manga series all around him, or his father for that matter. Or even how he grew up in the years between Goku defeating Piccolo Daimao up to the Budokai. But hey he got the service he deserves. Toriyama was big on giving something to Piccolo in the upcoming movies/series' and voilá we got it.
