The 80s would be fine, but Vice City set the bar so high on the "80sness" scale that it can't be topped. A late 70s game set in either Liberty City or a new location based on Detroit would get my vote.

In 1988, the sign wasn't even there. 2: The cityscape seems rather oversaturated. Now, this could be a stylistic choice, but it honestly doesn't feel like 1988. 3: The 80s era cars tend to spawn one at a time. 4: Not exactly a flaw, but it would be neat if some 80s era clothing was added.
5: NYPD cops are wrong too, they were supposed to dress a light blue uniform until the change in 1995 to the Navy blue ones they have today and in GTA 4 already.
6: A bit nitpicky, but the Game Boy wasn't released until 1989, so at this point Nintendo wouldn't have advertisements of it quite yet. They barely would've had it announced in publications like their very own Nintendo Power (which debuted in August of 1988).
That One Recon also most of the buildings like the Condé Nast building and second Times Square and most times buildings Times Square in general didn’t exist or weren’t finshed

I see what you did, and could have offered a better focus, you crushed all the hard work, Id offer help for some of the smaller subtle things, also Graffiti on the subway trains would have been incredible. great work either way.

The hairspray which you need to be careful with because my mom's hair almost burst in to flames back then. Synthesizers were pretty popular too. Screw the instruments! Get your synthesizer mow! Niko must have bought a Delorean and it took him back to the 80s.
I have a problem installing the mod. In OpenIV, it won't let me drag the files out of GTA IV NYC Map Overhaul. When I try to put the files in there, it has a cross and won't let me drag the the files so it can be easier. I even had Edit mode on. Any solutions?
+J Roberts It's GTA IV memory leak, called taxi bug. To get rid of this, you can download a script fix that forces game to load New cars to memory. Option 1: Traffic Flow Option 2: RIL.Budgeted Option 3: Chimkaru's Real Traffic Test all of them and see which one works best with your computer, in my case chimkaru real traffic works the best.
In the readme it says I need to install the time square first BUT I need to use Spark IV to install that and there is not a single version of Spark IV that actually works and Open IV isn't able to open the "manhat09" file the proper way so that I can install the mod. Do you have any suggestions on how to get around this problem ?
its the same 4 cars that spawn in on me, the taxis, the 4x4, van and the flatbed muscle car. and 80% of the time its just taxis that spawn. is there any fix for this?
Good but three things: Just a bit too bright and shiny. 1. Make it look more like liberty city because it's more like real life 2. Too many ads based on nostalgia. Like I can't imagine the breakfast club having a giant times square billboard. 3. Waaaaaaaay too many billboards, like nost of the screen is just billboards, and they're for things that didn't even come out in 1988, like star wars or back to the future 1. This is amazing but the billboards were inaccurate for 1988, this should've just been labeled the 80s as I saw billboards for movies and shows like Christine, Knight Rider, Back to the Future, and The Breakfast Club that were not released in 1988 but a little earlier in the 80s. Back to the Future II was more accurate as that one actually came out in 1988 but it was still cool seeing all of the billboards reflect the 80s.
Mod looks very nice! What about 90s in Liberty City? Because 80s are very bright. And 90s looks darker and more serious. This cars you also can use in mod. The rain and the autumn in Liberty City will look like in"Juice" film and "New Jack City". I'm sorry for my bad english. I just began to learn this language. Have you made a 1950's mod yet? That would be super cool if so. But I wouldn't add it to the city because that would most likely be too hard. Instead, I would add it to the desert area, and I would fix up all the desert buildings some. Then I would add 50's cars, boats, and billboards around that area. Because in the 50's that desert area used to be super nice and popular. It used to be like a cool beach area by the lake. But then the lake became polluted and everyone left. Then the area became abandoned and rundown.. I think that's the the story in real life.. But ya, that would be cool if you make a 50's mod that revitalizes that whole desert area. Trevor's town. I think the lake there is called the Salton Sea in real life.
My Times Square is not updated to the 1988 feel, it still has the generic in-game ads and I did everything correctly like for other mods from this pack
Got a problem. Tried endless times to get the game running with the mods without crashing and whenever I get to a certain point (First Date mission after i leave the bowling alley). I get a NET runtime error 1026! Any help?
I think the mod isn't meant for use with the campaign, I think the game attempts to spawn in assets from the old GTA 6, and ends up crashing the game by attempting to spawn in something that no longer exists, also, I know you made this post two years ago, and have probably forgotten about this, but still, just helping you solve the problem.
GTA IV is rather timeless game so with this mod the internet, phones and few lines of dialoque are the only things tgat would sugest it's not set in the 80s. I think I'll try to install this.

Only WTC is added in terms of building models, rest are just textures. If billboards work, Times Square should work too. Did you install WTC correctly? It's a separate mod, just like 1988 cars.

What issues did you have? You just need to replace the files in the locations stated in the readme. You should avoid autoinstallers, since they most often just break the game. Another important thing - I recommend 1.0.4.0 or 1.0.7.0, retail version of GTA IV. The 1.0.8.0 version that's on steam really doesn't like mods. You can also install my mod without Viva New York, there will be a difference, but not a big one

Check if your GTA IV folder is not in read-only mode (you can check it if you go into folder properties)

Have you restarted your game/console/PC? Only uninstall then reinstall the mod if it still doesn't work.

You can't do anything about it, IV is a shitty PC port, w/ mods is very difficult to maintain 60 fps even with 1070
