I owned one for 25 years. Bought it as a 7 year old. Sold it @ 32 years old. Only let me down once when the alternator voltage regulator failed @ 130,000 miles. Sold it with 185,000 miles and it was a manual. Sold it with the original clutch and exhaust. What a car !
W140 for me. Not the cutest looker but incredible level of engineering and quality of fitment. Had two 5 litre V8's, 1 coupe, 1 saloon. I used to think Jag XJ's had the best ride quality, then I bought a W140 and changed my opinion
Lovely car that Paul , exactly as you said, from an era when owning a Mercedes Benz meant something. Its successor the C class wasn't in the same league, the start of a bad period for MB. They're back now with reasonable quality (over complex) cars, but they've lost their badge prowess, everyone can own one, and worst still some even have Renault bits on them 😢
At least it's got the hand/parking/emergency brake handle in the right place instead of the later models that had a foot operated "hand" brake - in an emergency stop I once almost stood a later automatic model on its nose when the plonker in front stopped on a roundabout when nothing was coming! I hit the service brake with my right foot, and the "clutch" (parking brake) with my left foot!
I've done that twice in a Cadillac I used to have. I went to change into second gear after spending the day driving my right hand drive, manual van. Combo of smacking my left hand on the door handle and sending myself into the steering wheel due to useless lap belt and slippy leather sofa for a seat.
It's one of those interiors that shouldn't take longer than half an hour to fully valet. It's been very well looked after, and even the elastic string netting on the backs of the front seats haven't sagged much.
I recently valeted a modern '21-plate A-Class with 'Daimler-Benz' on the label in the driver's door shut. I think that's what they were first called prior to Mr Jaguar buying the rights to Daimler. As usual, I could be stupidly wrong.
