  • Dr. Utsa Patnaik, Emiritus Professor at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, on "Imperialism and The Present State of Capitalism". She is an Indian Marxist economist and has authored several books, including Peasant Class Differentiation - A Study in Method (1987), The Long Transition (1999) and The Republic of Hunger and Other Essays (2007).
"Mainstream economics sees capitalism as an isolated and closed system." In her seminal work, "Capital and Imperialism: Theory, History, and the Present", she argues that this is both historically false and logically untenable. Further, she provides insights into not just the historical ‘drain’ of wealth which has underwritten the economic trajectories taken by Britain and India, but also sheds light on the continuity of imperialism in the post-colonial period where it operates through policies that reduce purchasing power by cutting government expenditure, or disproportionately taxing non-capitalist classes as opposed to transnational corporations and wealth elites.

Loved hearing every bit of what Prof. Utsa Patnaik had to say about imperialism and its metamorphosis in modern day.

@induslove :: I don't understand why she refers to invasion and expulsion of Natives from their lands as "immigration" from the imperial/colonial powers ??
