Even after 30 years of reforms, not much has changed people still oppose privatization and liberalization. The root of the problem seems to be the Indian obsession with 'sarkari naukri.' While most Indians prefer services from Airtel or Jio, they would still choose to work at BSNL for employment. Similarly, they avoid sending their children to government schools but would rather take up teaching jobs in government institutions than in private ones.

Mr Montek argues against currency market interventions by the Govt which is flawed, at least partially. Similar recommendations by World Bank and IMF economist has ruined the economies of many developing countries such as Argentina, East Asian countries at one point of time. For weaker economies with large balance of payment problem and without any intervention by the Govt. in the forex market will lead to runaway inflation affecting mostly the poorer segment of the population. When a currency is in a free fall it is the rich who benefits most at the cost of the poor.

I respectfully disagree with Mr. Montek Ahluwalia's view of devaluing the currency. Doing this will make India a poor choice for foreign investments. These investments are critical in improving our supply chain efficiencies and boosting economic growth

Considering that India is a very old civilization and has embraced change but in a very slow fashion is basically our approach as people and as a nation .... so I believe that gradual reforms are the best way forward and this is where I disagree with Montek Singh Ahluwalia argument of very fast growth .... China type fast growth will put immense pressure on our society and culture which will put the whole country into turmoil .... To build consensus in a democracy needs time and people getting used to the idea .... So I believe in Indian context gradual reforms and gradual change is the way forward that's how we function and that's how we work .... We are not in any race .... @ : Much of what you are saying is not backed up with facts. Chinese gdp is growing at a slower rate than India’s at present. The fact that India’s economic policies are not currently determined by a Planning Commission need not be a defect. (India’s former finance minister - I think, he was the second - had resigned his post because of his disagreement on the heavy role of the Planning Commission in policy making). India’s future economic success depends on the extent to which it can achieve structural improvements ( such as eliminating public sector corruption, clean environment, rule of law, public sector rewards based on outcomes, reduction of government debt etc). It can be done.
Solve corruption all the top and bottom levels first. Anti corruption is the foundation of everything that Singapore built. Non-corrupt and efficient government. Translates to non corrupt and efficient businesses.
I will never forget the interview with Prannoy Roy in 2012, where he couldn't get MSA to see the common sense solution of distributing food grains rotting in Food Corp godowns to the poor and starving. Why do people like Tharoor, MSA, etc. who are loyalists to the "Nehruvian Economics" dynastic party, always sound the same: a tinge of queen's english and coconuts to the boot. The Bhagat Singh in me boils when I hear them in public life.

This economist forgot or did not bring up the major issue of developing all four pillars of the economy and educating the public to prepare for entrepreneurship and privatisation. Without human capital development, the privatisation will end up in pakoda making,. One needs basic technical and analytical capability. Apart from this India had tp carry forward with 50% reservations to backward classes. India needed an educated population to handle imports and match local production. It is because of lack of funds India developed human capital which cannot increase revenue but benefits enormously in the years ahead. He is economist and without financial constraints, the narrative will be different. Actually the GDP during the congress period from 1947 to 2013 is 50 times, a world record. The current govt. with all four pillars of economy developed and major human capital prepared unable to double up the economy in 12 years.

This is a great suggestion, and we've added it to our list of ideas for videos. We shall do our research and look for guests who are experts in this field so stay tuned and thank you so much for your inputs! 🙏
You are a very good interviewer. You don’t unnecessarily interject with your hist when did speaker discussed difficult topics making them comprehend easily.
Good podcast.

Your kind words have really made our day and we are so glad you enjoyed Siddhartha's hosting style... Thank you so much for tuning in and please let us know who you'd like to see next on the Neon Show 🙏
I respectfully disagree with Mr. Montek Ahluwalia's view of devaluing the currency. Doing this will make India a poor choice for foreign investments. These investments are critical in improving our supply chain efficiencies and boosting economic growth
I loved the podcast, but could you fill the hindi phrases with captions in English, or like rephrase that so the audience who doesn't speak Hindi could understand
I believe India should not be in any rat race ....
A great man.. Modi ji should again take his services.

I have an autographed book of his"Backstage". Interesting facets.
It is pity that such a bright economist with wide experience in public administration and policy is not being used at the highest levels of economic policy making in India today.
@@dealsisle Areh bhai sahab modiji engaged one Chiku from a bank as economic advisor and first thing he did was abolishing the economic planning commission., that means he is doing Indian economy with a foreign structure like Dubai where human capital is not a available. And now country is being run from the railway platform. Economy is damaged and now China economy growing at 6 times that of India and world before 20-3 predicted that India overtake China in 6 to 7 years and they totally stopped comparing with China and European press declared that India takes 250 years to match china’s. Still we are the best and someone is super guru. Rubbish

SARDAR: you’re 80 retire your think tank
India would be better off without a government 😂
He is looking like Mahesh Manjrekar Marathi director
There is indeed an uncanny resemblance!
Solve corruption all the top and bottom levels first. Anti corruption is the foundation of everything that Singapore built.
Non-corrupt and efficient government. Translates to non corrupt and efficient businesses.
There are many lobbying group supporting private sector in govt but not for public sector
I will never forget the interview with Prannoy Roy in 2012, where he couldn't get MSA to see the common sense solution of distributing food grains rotting in Food Corp godowns to the poor and starving.
MSA is typical of an ivory tower bureaucrat who can talk with great articulation.
But has been useless at solving real problems.
Why do people like Tharoor, MSA, etc. who are loyalists to the "Nehruvian Economics" dynastic party, always sound the same: a tinge of queen's english and coconuts to the boot. The Bhagat Singh in me boils when I hear them in public life.
@@ashok.vardhan.g
In the language of bhainse aur mangalasootr queens English kabade match karegi?
Bhagat Singh too wrote books in english
@hannanhub1717 there is a distinct difference between learning a language for communication (I learned 7, out of which 2 are European and 5 are Bharatiya) and having an internally colonized allegiance (i.e. coconuts). Comprennez?
@@ashok.vardhan.g People like you who get jealous when others who have a stronger command over a language compared to yourself are straight up low IQ weirdos. Not to mention your inability to comprehend Montek's economic ideology and to call it Nehruvian due to again the low IQ. People like you are a drain on any country they live in
