Healey Nab MTB - is it still worth a visit and who is it good for?

  • Join me as I revisit Healey Nab MTB tracks 3 years after heavy deforestation devastated the area. Is it still worth a visit and who does it appeal to (by modern standards)..
The Red XC loop and black DH track were originally designed by the legendary trail builder Rowen Sorrel and built in 2010 with funding from Lancashire County Council in conjunction with local volunteers.
A dedicated team of volunteers have maintained and improved the trails over the years and those same volunteers have done a great job salvaging as much of the riding as possible in the wake of the deforestation.
With modern bike geometry taken into consideration the red descent when originally built was more like a trail centre BLUE graded trail but the degradation of the trail has exposed much of the rock increasing the technicality back to RED grade in my opinion.
The black descent is an absolute hoot and has some lovely berms, drops and jumps that are great for building confidence. I'm not sure its black graded by todays standard but if you’re an intermediate rider looking to gain confidence on these features, its a superb track to session.
It's the perfect spot for a summers eve session especially for intermediate riders and also good to add into a longer ride in the Rivington or white coppice area and makes a nice change from the more natural tracks on the moors.
For the sake of this video I wanted to stay focused on the originally way marked trails as these would appeal to anyone new to MTB or new to the area “googling” local ride spots. Im aware that there are "advanced" off piste tracks in the woods. Two tracks that I had ridden previously had been lost to the ferns but I will be going back to do some additional exploring and vlogging.
I finished the ride with a pint and some loaded fries at the Rivington Brew Company which I strongly advise you visit when in the area if you haven’t already done so.

Pete, thank you so much for the comment, it really means a lot. I had a great day at Healey nab riding the original trails but there is some tasty looking off piste stuff around that I didn’t get chance to find was the filming took longer than expected. The brew co is ace, the beer and food is top drawer! Enjoy!!

Nab really needs a good overhaul! I only live down the road but haven't been for a couple of years and decided to go back up a couple of week ago and felt a bit lost when I got there. Ended up carrying on to the pigeon tower 😁

It does indeed. It’s a tricky one as all the digs there need to be official and sanctioned with correct insurances and permits etc which ultimately makes it more difficult to organise.
I also tend to ride the tracks at the pigeon tower as they are more fun for experienced riders and easily lapped as the climb is relatively easy. The Nab does have some nice features which are great for practice and very different from the rest of Rivvy. Thanks for the watch and the comment Chris. 👍

An incredible amount of work went in to the development of the area, it’s a real shame the tree disease affected it so badly. As an adopted MTB trail area it means digging needs to be official which makes it much harder to organise. the work that’s gone into making it rideable again would have been grueling, so hats off to the people that got involved.

I did Nab 4 years ago with my mate on winter time. It was very VERY moody. I remember we parked on the estate and climbed up

Sounds epic. I remember doing a night ride in winter with lights! Completely changes the feel of the place!

So the red trail you hit first you took a wrong turn I believe you go right instead of over into the berm...plus the off piste actually runs into.the red at some point and it's SUPER fun you should check it out...only been here twice myself and the first time I was very confused second time I went with a friend who has ridden them for years and it was so much fun

Yeah, you just kind of end up following your nose to get down. Definitely needs a bit more exploring for sure. There was a few off piste tracks that had disappeared since I had been a few years ago, overgrown with ferns. I need to get back and find that off piste track, looks ace!
Cheers for the integration sir! Hope to catch you on the trails!

Cheers fella! Thanks for the kind words. I have the same problem with food, if I didn’t ride I’d be 20 stone 😂😂 hope it was good! 👍
