Can’t thank you enough for this video, I had a 3” portion all along the seam, baffles completely exposed $13 and 15 minutes my car is silent, I used a aluminum lasagna pan inside and out , that stuff is amazing thanks again
My hole was on the top. I had to drop the muffler. If it were on the side easy fix. I just bought a new one. My mechanic works for cheap only 200 with muffler to put on. Thanks for making This video I never even knew that sort of caulking existed.
My pleasure. These fixes only last about a few months depending on road conditions so I also ended up just replacing my whole resonator and pipe with a new one as this one was patched multiple times over a few years. Thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe
aluminium fly screen mesh is better for strengthening, you can also do same with silicone caulk, most silicones go up to about 300degC, but there are some higher temp ones, or you can mix in copper powder to normal silicone to increase its temp resistance.
Yea, but it takes 2 1/2 hours of at least 500 degree Fahrenheit heat to cure Rutland cement. Could be great if applied then take a road trip. I'm still considering this Rutland cement because I do have a road trip coming up.
Unfortunately this only lasted about 3-4 months then blew out again. I ended up replacing the resonator and pipe. Thanks for watching. Hope this info helps. Please like and subscribe
Unfortunately it only held for 4 months. I ended up cutting the resonator and pipe off and replacing it. Full replacement will always be the one and only permanent solution. Thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe
Thank you for the update. I'm about to go down that road with Rutland furnace cement. I will use something stronger than aluminum foil. Inspection is due in November and the car is on its last legs so don't want to spring for a new muffler.
So far it has lasted me 36 days. Multiple torrential downpours at night followed by extreme heat during the day. I’ve driven about 500 km so far since this fix and all is well still. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe
It lasted 4 months before blowing out. I actually just replaced this portion of the exhaust a few weeks ago. Patches are only temporary. Full replacement is the only real fix. Thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe
Any cement or patch is only temporary. I found personally the best bet on this particular vehicle (2017 equinox) that it was just easier to cut out this section and install a new section. Hope your patch holds better than mine did. Thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe
I will be replacing this resonator portion of the exhaust in a future video. Please like and subscribe to stay tuned. It’s easier than you think. Thanks for watching
Where the heck was this a month an a half ago? hahah! my '16 had the same split and i used high temp JB Weld Epoxy. it worked for a few days! hahah!....gonna have to go back and try this! thanks again BB gun!!!!
This is my first day with it on. I’ll have to update as time goes on. It was a suggestion from a viewer. Thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe. Ps how do you know I go by bbgun?
@BillOfAllTrades2016 Hey 👋 how well did this hold up ? I have the same problem with my Terrain. I passed emissions surprisingly, but failed my safety because the tech can feel exhaust coming out .
It’s only been on for two weeks but holding up nicely. Looks bubbly but the hole is still filled and hard as a rock. This will definitely hold for you to pass safety. Thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe
@@Brian_Buckley Was it the HighHeat JB Weld 2 part stick? I have that as backup but just paid a guy to patch a few spots on my cat and change a couple of crush gaskets and manifold bolts. 80 bucks was worth a shot. But I have 2 kinds of Jb Weld. Just curious.
Definitely kept it quiet for a bit. The patch in this video only lasted 4 months though. I just replaced the resonator and pipe a couple weeks ago. Thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe
A cheap long term fix is to remove the bad muffler and put in a cherry bomb muffler. Not as quiet as stock, but a longer term fix than slapping goop in the leaking muffler.
Using a cherry bomb exhaust is much more expensive than this fix. This costs $11CAD. The method you are describing would cost roughly $60 depending on the place of purchase. Plus most people may not have the tools so then you gotta buy a grinder and a cutoff wheel. Then you gotta buy muffler clamps. Might as well just replace with o m at that point. This is a cheap quick easy fix that anyone can do.
If you are merging two pipes together I would suggest a wide band clamp. Please refer to this video to see the clamps I’m referring to and how to install them: th-cam.com/video/-U_vm7p1I4w/w-d-xo.html Thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe
Love it. My Rv muffler exploded earlier this yr due to a flooding carburetor.. i took 2 smaller load straps just to ratchet it back into shape.. then welded it as best i cud in the very tight spot. Had little clearance for welding unless i was to remove the drive shaft. It actually sound real good (nice mean sound like these new muscle cars) .. but i want it a little quieter (it used to be considerably quiet for a 454 big block Chevy with dual exhaust.. just 1 exploded. So now this remedy you used seems pretty clever. I think ill try it, but leave a slight crack, open spot Haha... so it still sounds a little mean, and when cool air goes into a cracked muffler u get some popping upon decelleration lol
@koollee I’m glad you found this video. I think leaving a small gap is a great idea to showcase the 454 big block in all is glory. Enjoy the sound. Thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe
Nice idea 👍 Guess that stuff for "stove and fireplace" is a lot cheaper then anything from a car shop?? But why the tin foil? Didn't get that part. I'll guess I would have gone for a little piece of mesh to give it structure, but I never did a repair like this yet. ( need to soon though...)
The foil was a cheap reinforcement because the mortar gets brittle over time and splits again. I did not have any mesh on me but that would be more durable and long lasting. Thanks for the tip. And thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe
Still held for 4 months. It’s not a showroom car so nobody really cares. Always someone who analyzes too close and loves to point out other’s imperfections though.
If you are looking to get an online diagnosis you need to be far more specific than that. Literally every component under your vehicle makes a noise… and when any component fails usually the noise gets louder as it worsens. Describe the noise please in detail. What year make and model is the vehicle, when is the noise occurring. Always? Only at certain speeds? I’m gonna assume it’s an exhaust noise because you are commenting on an exhaust video but I have literally no information to go on here. Have you got under the car to look at where the noise could be coming from? Even if you diagnose it as exhaust noise it could be a hole in the muffler, hole in the resonator, hole in the pipe. Could be a cracked manifold. Maybe someone stole your catalytic converter.
It held for almost 4 months. I replaced the resonator and pipe shown in the video last week. Patching (regardless of method or brand) is only temporary. Replacement is the only permanent solution. Thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe
Yes you are correct. And I did end up replacing this resonator and it cost $200 for the resonator and clamps. Plus $50 for tools. So $11 is definitely a cheaper route. Thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe

Won't that crack spread underneath the repair? If so should we spread mortar from one end all the way across to the other end?
Rutland Furnace Cement would probably work better as it's designed to adhere to metal.
I will have to try to remember that. I put a new resonator on but if it sprouts a hole I will try that. Thanks for the tip. Please like and subscribe

After the tin foil you added more mortar. But on top of that you smeared a blob of something else. What was that?
The blob is also more of the mortar from the same tube. Thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe
