Yeah, the players and viewers only know what they doing because he is commenting about. This game is crazy if you don't dominate the rules and strategies.
Matt, I feel like you are vastly underselling the benefit of an alliance with the Bene Gesserit. It seems like the biggest weakness is the lack of money, but once you get that money they can be devastating...especially if Kharama cards give you the ability to steal Treachery from other players. All you need to do is ally with the emperor to take monopoly on the treachery. Then get another loan from the emperor to drop troops and then dominate. Even if you don't get any weapons yourself, the ability to force others to leave themselves defenseless against your ally's weapons is worth the alliance for them in and of itself. You don't need to have any board presence or currently possess any good treachery cards for this to become extremely effective. Spoilers..... Team Anna! It is easy to see why she was ganged up on last time, what a power house. The weather control and shield wall combo was good enough that she was already the spiritual winner of the game, but then she took it all the way to the finish line. In the end she had a better sense of the the weather than the Fremen, better prescience than the Atreides, more ruthless than the Harkonnen, landed shock troops that were more effective than the Emperor and maneuvered in the background with more subtlety than the Bene Gesserit. Most importantly remember she only needed to maintain the status quo to win... But she went for total dominance. Looks like the guild was playing with Norma Cenva leading them in this game.
Spoilers.... Yeah she really deserved that win. Especially satisfying to see how OD screwed up and helped her win considering he got talked into his super dumb betrayal in the last game.
Tom Atreides also stays very much on top of the game (but he has prescience). But as Atreides he is always in the crosshairs and has to play more on the table (because without his stronghold he lacks mobility and income).

The worm movement at 1:10:00 ish I don’t believe was legal. Worms can only travel through sand and the storm was blocking him from moving into arakeen.
The rules mention no such limitation to worm movement. I can see why you'd thematically want to have a rule like that, but the rules only forbid moving into strongholds already held by 2 players and into storms.
vleessjuu I’m not sure if going off the board is ok for worm travel, but the position of the storm would make it impossible to travel to Arakeen because of the rock. I think it was more of a common sense thing since the worms can’t travel through the rock. Like I said though I can’t speak to the fact that maybe the other hemisphere is considered all sand so you can go off the board and reach any location connected to the other hemisphere.
@@chrisbray3084 Sure, as a common sense rule you could argue something like that, but the rules really do not say that. They flatly state you can move troops to any territory you like, subject only to normal occupancy rules. It mentions no considerations of how to go from A to B, so in a narrow reading of the rules you should just treat this movement as some sort of teleportation. Of course, the rules of Dune have been riddled with these sorts of interpretation issues for decades, so I'd just say: play the game how you like. It's what people have been doing all along. In fact, this video uses advanced rules but no advanced combat (where you have to pay spice to use troops at full strength), even though the GF9 rules are quite clear about stating that advanced rules should incorporate advanced combat. This alone shows how people have been picking and choosing how to apply the rules how they like.

Played this game a lot in high school. I appreciate seeing it played again. I think 7 turns is too short to see the consequences of certain game altering actions but the game does drag when everyone is grubbing dead from the tanks.
At about 28:00 the Bene Gesserit move a force into the Polar Sink. I believe this only applies when there's a shipment from "off-planet" (See Bene Gesserit ability card.) I believe this is an error. Fremen and Spacing guild (when they ship a force already on the board) are "on-planet" shipment.
Love these! I might recommend adding a display to help with the Traitor card bidding. You could indicate who has a full hand, who is currently bidding, what spice amounts ppl have bid, who doesn't have enough money to continue bidding.
I've played this with to 4, then two days ago I played 6 total. 3 newbies, 3 folx who have played before, and it was EPIC. There was yelling, high giving, backstabbing, and everything in-between! The Fremen even won in round 10 with their special victory condition! It was SO SPECIFIC! 10/10

Thank you Matt for your humour, I chuxkle evertime (2:45ish) "Haha, the age of the bene gesserit begins" I love watching these and hope you plan to play again sometime.
I don't really understand why Matt didn't ally with Anna. Sure, she wasn't quite the Emperor in terms of funding, but she seemed to provide an option that he didn't consider. The ability to warp down troops for free, he asks her for funding, she provides and he immediately passes it back and he is able to leverage his strong leaders with troops. I know he was lacking treachery cards, but I also feel he was trying to aim too hard for the "perfect" combination of a lot of money (e.g. an alliance with the Emperor), rather then the combination he had access to. Maybe I'm missing something about it as I literally have only experienced these podcasts. I found this highly entertaining however, thank you for providing an insight to a game I honestly I never knew existed.
Argh not again. I'm having my breakfast at work and watching youtube for the 15 minutes it takes and I see this in my feed. Last game half my workday vanished. Not today ol' friend. I will work today... and treat myself to this awesomness once i'm at home :) I gave in. I'm doing longtime tests today so I'm watching the game at the same time :D
What is happening at 51:12? It looks like Matt is prompting Jason to say something, mouthing the words as Jason says "There's some alliance stuff that can happen in this game."
As far as I've seen, bunch of what the creators of this game consider projectile weapons, are in fact knives, meant for melee, and according to dune, exactly what you'd want to use against shields. So how in the nine hells does shield protect against them.
With the games being half the length of time does that nerf the the Bene Gesserit, seams like in a 15 turn game they could accumulate a massive sleeper force in the districts to activate late game. to compensate should 2 go with each beam?
Most games don’t go passed round 6 in my experience. I know in the Gale Force Nine version, the max rounds go down to 10 from 15 so 7 rounds isn’t that bad to call the game.
1:09:28 there's no path through sand territories to Arrakeen from Habbanya Ridge Flat that don't pass through storm, since the worm can't move through the polar sink or hill territories.
I'm sure it's been brought up many times, but use of Ornithopters does not require the units to begin in Arrakeen/Carthag -- when the table is advising Jason at around 25:00, he could have beamed down 3 to Tuek's Sietch and then flown all 3 to the spiceblow and saved cash + increased harvesting/combat efficiency.
This is when I wish I didn't live in a very rural area. I can't imagine finding 5 other people to play this....anywhere near me. They would have to be flown in. Anyway, this is a blast to watch. I just started reading Dune. I love the idea of a feudal society set in the far future.
I'm surprised at how little Matt pushes for alliances as Bene Gesserit. I mean yeah the Bene Gesserit are probably the weakest faction when they're alone, but allied with someone who has cash, they're probably the best faction in the game.
yeah, denying that alliance offer from the Guild when Anna was flush with cash AND had rights to see all the treachery cards the coming round, AND she was in a good position on the board + troops in reserve... that was kind of odd.
Really awesome content guys. I am a huge fan of the book series and of the board game. I also had printed my own copy of the borad game to play it and it is definitely one of my favorites. I also had many rules clarified just watching your videos!
Dude, just got my copy of Dune after watching this and the other three, along with Shut Up & Sit Down's review of Dune, this game looks super fun, can't wait to play with my friends and family in the next week or two... Hope you guys do another Dune game eventually!
House Corrino/The Emperor looks like they'd be the easiest faction for a new player. All their troops start off-world and they get a lot of passive income from CHOAM bidding, so there's less pressure to take decisive action in the first few turns while they're learning how play progresses.
Emperor and guild are probably the most straight forward, with harkonnen coming next second. It doesn't really matter too much though, I've found people can get really into it first time around without issue since it encourages so much communication and rules are surprisingly intuitive!
This is an epic game. Anna's sitting there, all sweet and innocent; she has 2 cities. Round 6, storm phase. Wait! WHOOM! The shield wall just blew up. WHOOSH! A coriolis storm sweeps halfway around the board. Arrakis and Carthag are simply swept away. When the dust clears, ... Does no one else notice that the Guild still holds 2 cities, with troops in hand and tons of money? Eventually Matt notices. The other players are still trying to recover from the shock of seeing their entire on-board presence vanish. Resistance is feeble. Epic. As for game 1, and the double treachery against the guild, what was the point of that? Sure, Lars, you got 7 spice and a giggle, OD, you got a kick out of stabbing your ally in the back, but your long-term reputation is in tatters. As for the BG, maybe play that faction to win, but rather to play that faction. As for treachery, is House Harkonnen really the worst? What about House Corrino? What happened to Shaddam's father?
Besides that I love whatching this... Am I the only one waiting for Jason to say: "Oh, I'm gonna go walking in the moonlight with you," in a menacing tone?
Great game, as much as the first one. I’m looking forward to more, when you feel like it. I understand it may get old at some point, but I get the impression you all are having loads of fun, which shows, so I’d be happy to keep watching :)
New to Dune(played 1st game yesterday) one thing that came up in our game was how the transfer/transaction of spice between players work. One specific scenario regarding alliance with emperor. Doesn't the Emperor have to pay the bank if he pays for an ally's treachery card? Can allies just give each other spice?
Fantastic game. Why don't you ever play with advanced combat though? It seems to me like double spice blow and no adv combat floods the game with spice and makes the fremen less powerful.
Rocket Steadman too complex at maths as I guess, and it adds another layer of "bidding" on top of dialing troops, which is not really much interesting... Also it favours rich too much, not only fremen.
I am really glad I stumbled across your content. I have never played this game but I do love watching you guys play. Subscribed and looking forward to your content. Thank you.
Thank you for playing Dune. I saw that some people liked it in passing where the players said they loved it out of any other game.
I will work today... and treat myself to this awesomness once i'm at home :)
I gave in. I'm doing longtime tests today so I'm watching the game at the same time :D
Drinking game: Drink +1 every time Matt says '...like in the book'. I made it to minute 30! :-) (love this game)
What is happening at 51:12? It looks like Matt is prompting Jason to say something, mouthing the words as Jason says "There's some alliance stuff that can happen in this game."
I find the lack of dune quotes in this game ... disturbing.
Not a single "live long and prosper" like from the traitorous Dr. Spock … smh
Exterminate...
They could travel over the southern hemisphere and back no?
okay I can definitely see why people loved watching you guys play this. the very first bidding round was great entertainment hahah. hope you do more!!
Already seen it on Twitch. Back for the condensed rehash. CHOOB.
@2:35:35 I'm definitely here because of SD&SU video. I've bought the GF9 version, but haven't played it yet. Game looks awesome!
2:10:21 I remember that Episode of invader zim. I can recall that scene so vividly. That’s so weird
Omg this was so good. Congratz winning by a tie breaker, so clutch and so tight!
This is when I wish I didn't live in a very rural area. I can't imagine finding 5 other people to play this....anywhere near me. They would have to be flown in. Anyway, this is a blast to watch. I just started reading Dune. I love the idea of a feudal society set in the far future.
This is almost literally why I moved out of a rural area, also social dance
What a boss way to pull a win! That was awesome.
Definitely time for the annual Dune stream, Gale Force 9 put out some kind of expansion timed with the movie.
I dont think OD was allowed to sand worm the polar cap.
Would be neat if the Bene Gesserit could use the voice to influence battles if they're in the same location. Highest bidder gets the use.
Played Dune a lot back in the 80's and looking forward to playing again - great group!
Great show. I think a interesting point to make would be the minimum amount of troops needed by the winner in a battler.
Anna with her "When you swing at the Guild you can´t miss." 🤣
Amazing game. Talented and very entertaining group playing it! That's great to see you playing guys.
Every time O.D. loses a battle, it's by one point or he throws.
Tom (Atreides) looks enough like the actor who played Paul in the Dune miniseries that I actually did a bit of a double-take.
It seems strange to me that Duncan Idaho, the Atredies Swordmaster is only a 2 leader.
Really awesome content guys. I am a huge fan of the book series and of the board game. I also had printed my own copy of the borad game to play it and it is definitely one of my favorites. I also had many rules clarified just watching your videos!
So cool to watch you guys play! Can't wait to introduce my group to it.
2:39:24 I think I am in love. Anna is a tactical genius. What a play!
What a fucking play by Anna popping the shield wall and sending in the storm!
Dude, just got my copy of Dune after watching this and the other three, along with Shut Up & Sit Down's review of Dune, this game looks super fun, can't wait to play with my friends and family in the next week or two... Hope you guys do another Dune game eventually!
Loved the Local Hero reference, Matt! One of my all-time favorite movies.
More of this please, it's very fun to watch!
The last video convinced me to buy the next run... is there a good 'beginner' faction I can get my friends into?
Right, my family knows what we are playing this Thanksgiving.
Matt: I can't do anything without cards.
Also Matt: No I don't want to ally with the Emperor
Also Also Matt: How much is Jason bidding on that card?!
He doesn't want to win, he knows as the guy constantly talking and explaining everything if he wins the game he will look like a douche.
At 1:04:40 where do the two cards come from, that Matt says "whoever takes Arrakeen, get's that stuff"?
Players can give spice to each other for any reason at any time.
Also it favours rich too much, not only fremen.
correct. Without advanced combat fremen is extremely weak. They will never win.
Correct, which is why you need to give Fremen an extra perk when playing this way. Fex 4 free revivals instead of 3.
I wonder if the setup for the game could have a light shiting at the table at an angle, so we can get a sense of how tall eventual stacks get.
Man. For those of us having a tough time finding people to play this with, this is a great way to get a Dune fix.
Why are three of the factions orange? Bloody hard to make out troops.
Fremen should be closer to yellow and Emperor should have its icon colors flipped to be an orange emblem with black background.
Hoping that you will do some more Dune games one day! These videos convinced me to buy the game
03:02:08 "I didn't plan to lose!!!"
I feel that, O'D. I feel that...
This is incredibly addicting to watch. I'm definitely getting this game on the new printing.
I love seeing this game played keep it up!
I am really glad I stumbled across your content. I have never played this game but I do love watching you guys play.
Subscribed and looking forward to your content. Thank you.
Thank you for playing Dune. I saw that some people liked it in passing where the players said they loved it out of any other game. So, naturally I was then curious about the the game and how it played. Also a little surprised that a game based off a book, based off a movie, made back in the 70's, became so well liked but not widely known. At least for my generation. Thank you again for playing it and putting it on TH-cam. You satisfied that curiosity I had, it was a blessing.
I don't play boardgames, and I've seen Dune once. But I really enjoyed just watching this! I watched it after watching the entire Dune game before.
Thanks for the content love watching you guys play games. I hope to see you play this again. And hoping maybe a twilight imperium game in the future?
