    Great video.. on accessories, the red joysticks were a must for me... not to have better equipment, but to find the dang thing if you drop it in a rocky area, the red makes it easier to find. LOL

      thank you for watching! Dude the threads on the joysticks of the Mini 3 are SUPER fine. I don’t get it. It would easily be designed with a simple twist/lock system. …Like with a magnet twist lock or something. Anycrap. I usually don’t bitch. I guess the coffee hasn’t kicked in this mornin yet.

    The interesting thing about your videos, Ted, is that they are highly "bingeable"! I started a year ago with drone shooting, actually, few years back I wanted to own a drone to document my experience of the world. During the last year I obsessed with all the things you mentioned, filters that make your videos more "cinematic", drone movements that are insta-"cinematic", "cinematic" settings, 180 rule, better "cinematic" LUTs, better editing software, etc... Interestingly enough, of all the youtube "drone experts", close to no-one ever mentioned the true essence of art and creativity which is a meaningful and captivating video in its art and form through composition and small amount of color manipulation. I almost lost my fun and will to fly anymore.
    The point I want to make here, is a big thank you to you. After watching your channel, it invigorated me again to start looking around for those small things that make a difference. Your simplicity and approach to the content, let alone coaching technique truly shows experience; test-and-trial talking through every advice; truly remarkable.
    Thank you again.

    Ted, Ive done a lot of landscape photography, but only just bought my first drone. Watched lots of vids before buying a DJI, and lots of vids of how to fly/ what to buy etc! Then I came across your channel . Wow! your first guy Ive watched who cuts through the bullshit and makes you realise its really about photography not just flying about! Had my drone less than 2 weeks now , but man, you have opened my eyes to so much, now, rather than flying everytime I can, Im taking time to think and plan where and when to shoot and how to go about things. Ive seen some peoples videos that are very good, but you are the only guy who cuts to the "how to get results. Thank you Ted, you are a great teacher! Steve in the UK

    Darn!! I was going to send you a set of yellow Anodized aluminum joy Sticks for Christmas!! Oh well, I'm sure Amazon will take them back!! Excellent tutorial as always and I'm SO HAPPY to find out that I'm NOT the only one that gets the RIGHT and LEFT "muxed ip " when flying!!! I do always start out with dronie facing away from me so Left is Left and Right is Right but orientations do seem to change during flight!!!! Wished I'd seen your videos when I was starting up as I would have saved some bucks on accessories!!! I bought some ND filters as thought the 180 rule was sacrosanct but realize NOW that Auto settings are my best friend!

    Thanks Ted. I am a beginner and have watched a LOT of videos since starting. After a while you hit information overload so it is really refreshing to find videos that are clear and focus on the absolute essentials while being delivered in a fun, even occasionally humorous, way. I notice in your gear list that you have the Pocket 2... it would be fantastic if you could produce some videos for it like you've been doing for drones. Cheers.

      Very true John, I find the same thing happens to me, I watch heaps of “how to” drone videos and certainly agree with your comments regarding information overload. I find that when I’m out flying and filming I try to implement too many of the tips I’ve seen on other videos and end up with little useable footage.
      As you say, it’s fantastic to be reminded that it’s the essentials that give the best chance of success.

    Another fantastic video Ted 😀It is packed with useful information that will definitely move me a little bit closer to getting my dream shot 😀 When l got my Canon EOS 50 film camera's back in the days, and later my Canon 30D digital camera that l used enthusiastically for year, l spent endless hours getting educated on your rules of composition, and then practicing applying it when taking photos. Since l got my Mini 2 (and now Mini3 pro), l have spent hours and hours watching helpful TH-cam videos from guys that mostly are explaining the drone manual to me. They have all been very helpful, so hopefully, l don't sound ungrateful to them, but none of them comes close to do what you do, and that is to combine the two, flying and the art of photography. I bought my first drone 9 years ago just to fly it. I got my Mini 2 that l replaced with a Mini 3 Pro with the main purpose of filming my motorcycle rides. After l found your channel, l feel that l am getting all exited again about my photography hobby that l have been neglecting for years, but now l will replace my Canon DSLR camera with a Dji flying drone camera. Time will only tell where this excitement will take me 🤣🤣 Thanks again, and keep up the good work 👏 🙌

      @Ted Nemeth l have a V-Strom adventurebike that l like to take off road in Iceland, but here in Canada I have a Suzuki Boulevard C90 cruiser that l bought new in 2005. I recently had an accident on that bike where l broke my collarbone and a few ribs. I am getting back to normal but now l have to decide if l want to spend my money on repairing my old and reliable bike, that l have made my own with all the possible accessories l could find, or to get another bike 😙

    If you listen carefully to Ted's lessons, and then watch the cinematic choices he makes in his own videos, you'll understand. He puts his mind into each shot. Look at his clips and you'll see that every shot tells a story. Each choice he makes is intentional, like a good writer who uses honest syntax to craft declarative sentences and engage his audience. He cuts out the BS and isolates the purest essence of the shot. That doesn't mean he skips over technical information, but he really shows how to tell a story with a drone. He's changed the way I shoot and I am so much happier with the results than I used to be. Give his method a shot and I guarantee you'll see improvement in your own results no matter how you've been shooting in the past. Be a drone storyteller, not just a robot with a controller in your lunch hooks.

    Well said Ted!! I think for me the issue is I don't go out and practice enough. Yeah!..I'm the guy that just flies around and hopes to get some decent footage. I have been planing more which does make a big difference. I still have a little anxiety when flying. Things like bringing my gimbal down and not able to see what's around me. Even if I know there is nothing in my way. So I appreciate these videos. BTW It may be a trip for you, but found a great marina to fly over in Babylon. Took off from a venue called The Piermont in Babylon. Was lucky to capture all the channels and boats on the bay. Been going to a few marinas on the Great South Bay. Love it. Thanks for taking the time to help others.

      The stinger is an amazing car, I have had a lot of sporty cars in my time, however the stinger is close to the top of the list. It’s discontinued now. It’s to bad people weren’t able to look past the badge. They truly missed out! You’re are correct, they did design the stinger with the designer from BMW and Audi.

    Another great vid Ted! Do you use AE-Lock in Auto Mode or have you tried it? One would think using the AE-Lock would keep your exposure the same throughout any drone maneuvering, like if your using spotlight, helix, etc.

    • @TedNemeth
      @TedNemeth  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hey my friend! AE lock defeats the purpose of me using auto exposure mode. Every time the drone makes a tiny change toward & away from the sun, the exposure changes. That’s why its important to use auto exposure. You’ll always have dead perfect exposure. THAT is the most important thing.

  • @holyjoe

    Great stuff! Thanks! Just a tiny suggestion, Ted: Please set your video camera to fixed focus. The way this video flips from focusing on your face, then to your moving hands, then back to your face, every few seconds, makes your face keep going into and out of focus, which is visually distracting. Thanks again!

    • @TedNemeth
      @TedNemeth  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Joseph. I have the Canon R6 which has amazing auto focus. That issue never happened before. Normally it locks onto my eyes (face recognition) so it will ignore my hands in the scene.

    Excellent summary of the basics! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience. You covered some really important concepts in a way that is easy to understand. One thing I would add to the flying part is don't become so hyper-focused on the shot on the screen that you lose track of where your drone is. If that level of focus is necessary, bring a friend to specifically watch the drone's position so you can avoid flying into the top of that 90 foot white spruce. (Don't ask how I learned that lesson! lol)

    How many truths there are in these 28 minutes of video! 😀It would be very nice to have the time and the opportunity to always have a slow intentional workflow, but unfortunately for me it is not always possible, because in my travels I usually manage to fly the drone during small breaks, while family and friends are waiting for me, so I have to do everything quickly and effectively. I have to say that flying under that pressure, while still trying to keep the perspective of the landscape photographer, has helped me to improve my qualities anyway, but the real problem is that sometimes in the excitement I forget to press the rec button! 😅🤣🥴

    • @TedNemeth
      @TedNemeth  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hey Andrea! I totally know what you mean about sometimes having to throw the drone up real quick to grab a shot. That’s when you have to rely on the instincts that have been built up from slow deliberate practice,….when there’s time.
      Yup done that too where you capture a great scene then realize forgot to hit the record button. Dang.

  • @feo_andrew2506

    "Gear doesn't matter" It's true, but sometimes new gear have features, that you really need(. So for me this feature is active track. I bought my mini 2 year ago and it's really great drone for me small, cheap, and powerful. It seems to me that I have not revealed even half of it's potential. But when the mini 3 was introduced, i felt that my drone is missing a part and this parts were an active track, and sensors (I crashed my mini 2 while flying backwards p.s it is alive). So I think you need to upgrade your gear only when it's unavoidable, and you just can't get active track on mini 2( like you can't get optical zoom on your phone.

    • @TedNemeth
      @TedNemeth  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      hey Andrew! That old Greek saying: “gear doesn’t matter” pertains to some things but not others. For example: a wildlife photographer MUST have a telephoto lens so they don’t scare off the animals. I would say that is specialty gear that is required. But what is implied in that saying “gear doesn’t matter” and I’m applying to the drone community here: is that I don’t want beginners with a Mini 2 ….to think they need to spend $1000 for the new Mini 3 because it has a 1.7 aputure while the Mini 2 only has a 2.8 aputure. I’ve taken astounding low-light images with the Mini 2.
      Just like consumers are conditioned to think they must upgrade their iPhone 12 to iPhone 13. It’s all marketing. I just want beginners to go out in nature and enjoy the hobby & not fall into the gear marketing hypnosis. Just my opinion.
      Besides, ….the DJI Mini 4 SuperDuperPro is coming. I can’t wait!

    I enjoy filming with a drone as much as anyone, but I've come to two conclusions about it:
    1. 99% of all the footage taken with a drone, should really only be used as B-roll
    2. Most clips in the best videos (taken with any type of camera) produce the best results when they're only about 5 -10 seconds in length - longer than that tends to be boring
